Under the Ly – Tran dynasty it was called the Quoc Tu Giam and called the Thai Hoc hall at the Le dynasty. During the time the Van Mieu served as a university. Under the Nguyen dynasty, the capital was moved in Hue. So, the Quoc Tu Giam was transformed into a shrine to Confucius’ parents, called Khai Thanh. In 1947, Khai Thanh building was destroyed by the French and it was reconstructed in 1999 on the ground of the original Imperial Academy. At present, Thai Hoc hall includes the main buildings of the Tien duong (Front hall), Hau duong (Back hall), Ta vu (Left wing), Huu vu (Right wing), Lau chuong (Bell pavilion), Lau trong (Drum pavilion).

The fifth courtyard: Quoc Tu Giam - School for the sons of the nation (Imperial academy) Good morning everybody I’m Ly That’s my pleasure to stand here in this morning to tell you about the fifth courtyard of the Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam and now I would like to contitue the presentation of my team As you can see, firstly is Thai Hoc gate It’s three doors structure with a covered roof Through this gate is the school for the sons of the nation Under the Ly – Tran dynasty it was called the Quoc Tu Giam and called the Thai Hoc hall at the Le dynasty During the time the Van Mieu served as a university Under the Nguyen dynasty, the capital was moved in Hue So, the Quoc Tu Giam was transformed into a shrine to Confucius’ parents, called Khai Thanh In 1947, Khai Thanh building was destroyed by the French and it was reconstructed in 1999 on the ground of the original Imperial Academy At present, Thai Hoc hall includes the main buildings of the Tien duong (Front hall), Hau duong (Back hall), Ta vu (Left wing), Huu vu (Right wing), Lau chuong (Bell pavilion), Lau (Drum pavilion) The Tien duong is also called the front hall, which includes of nine compartments It’s designed for meetings, grand ceremonies and other cultural activities such as: Traditional music performance The Hau duong or the back hall is a wooden architecture of two storeys It’s designed for presenting history of the Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam for introducing the nature of Confucian education in Viet Nam and for honoring the personages who made great contributions to the develop this site and Vietnamese culture in general On the first storey, in the middle is the place to worship Chu Van An – A noble teacher of Viet Nam, who was the most prestigious rector of Quoc Tu Giam You know, Chu Van An was famous for his talent, virtue and outstanding teaching capability In the past, King Tran Minh Tong invited him to Kingdom to teach for the prince And he was appointed to the Deputy Headmaster of Quoc Tu Giam After his death, King Tran Nghe Tong entitled him the name Van Trinh Cong, nickname was Khang Tiet and worshiped him at the Van Mieu as the present Some antiques are displayed around here, such as: map of Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam, uniforms of the students of the Imperial Academy, two famous wooden paitings: “Ca chep vuot vu mon” and “Vinh quy bai to” The second storey is the place to worship three kings who had great services in forming and expanding the Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam King Ly Thanh Tong is worshiped in the center of the house, who established Van Mieu in 1070 King Ly Nhan Tong is worshiped on the right of the house, who established Quoc Tu Giam in 1076 to select the talented students to train and serve for the country And King Le Thanh Tong is worshiped on the left of the house, who had the Dai Thanh built in 1483 and erected stele for the doctor laureate in 1484 The authors of these statues are artists named Nguyen Minh Vu and Nguyen Van Dong On either side of the Hau duong are two pavilion which hold a drum and a bronze bell To the right is the Drum pavilion, a drum is 2.01 meters wide and weighs 700 kilogram And to the left is the Bell pavalion, a bell is 2.1 meters high and 0.99 meters wide The Ta vu (Left wing) and the Huu vu (Right wing) is the office of present Management Board and a small library which keeps reference materials about the site As you remember, Thai Hoc hall is a important part of the Van Mieu - QTG And we need to have a good awareness when to visit to contribute to the protection of this site My presentation will end here Looking forward to receiving your suggestions to complete this presentation Thank you for attention, thank you so much Figure 1: The fifth courtyard (source: Minh Ly) Figure 2: Thai Hoc Gate view from the outside (source: Minh Ly) Figure 3: Thai Hoc Gate viewed from the inside (source: Minh Ly) Figure 4: Front hall includes nine compartments (source: Minh Ly) Figure 5: Inside the front hall (source: Minh Ly) Figure 6: The first storey of the back hall (source: Minh Ly) Figure 7: The uniforms of the student of Quoc Tu Giam (source: Minh Ly) Figure 8: The second storey of the back hall (source: Minh Ly) Figure 9: Bell pavalion (source: Minh Ly) Figure 10: Drum pavalion (source: Minh Ly) Figure 11: The left wing (source: Minh Ly) Figure 12: The right wing (source: Minh Ly) ...
