HOMEWORK Subject: Bút ngữ tiếng anh cao cấp 05 TOPICS - VOCABULARY - MY OPINION ABOUT THE READING The most difficult skill of studying English Successful in learning a foreign language Money is the root of all evil The influence of movies and television on people’s behavior Convenience in processing food today The most difficult skill of studying English Men who learn English as a foreign language often say that writing is more difficult than any other skills As the fact of the matter, most native speakers of the language have to make their efforts themselves to write accurately and effectively even on what they are well aware of Needless to say, it is not easy at all for a non-native speaker to something that an average native speaker usually considers a difficult job to Here are three reasons which, in my opinion, can answer the question why writing becomes the most difficult skills Firstly, writing requires good grammar A non-native person has to remember a large number of rules in structure which are quite different from their own language This is a very big problem if he or she learns the grammar with an English native teacher at the beginning The teacher cannot help to point out the distinct differences between the two languages In this case, the learner must figure out the differences themselves and even outline some rules to convert from their own language to the target language Secondly, people are often known to spend less time to write than to listen, to speak and even to listen Learners learning the language in their country are proved to read more than any other skills while learners learning overseas must listen to the language most of their time In any cases, they spend little of their time for writing It is clearly known that an average person spend the most for listening, the second most for speaking, then reading and finally writing Thirdly, when students of English as a foreign language write something, they have a big question in mind whether what they write is correct or incorrect Who can answer the question for them and help them recognize the mistakes It is, in many cases, the teacher who is teaching them and is ready to give them a hand The problem however I want to mention is that the teacher does not have enough time to correct for all of them if there are more than ten students in the class When the teacher corrects the writing for just some of them, the other students cannot recognize their own mistakes Without correction, the mistakes may be repeated many times and become bad habits which are hard to adjust In conclusion, writing is the most difficult skill that learners of any foreign language may face To be good at it, learners must give much effort Vocabulary Number Words Distinct Explanation  easily or clearly heard, seen, felt, etc  clearly different or of a different kind  [only before noun] used to emphasize that you think an idea or situation definitely exists and is important Foreign  in or from a country that is not your own  [only before noun] dealing with or involving other countries foreign affairs/news/policy/tradeforeign aida foreign correspondent (= one who reports on foreign countries in newspapers or on television)  foreign to somebody/something (formal) not typical of somebody/something; it may sometimes seem to him that some of the differences are completely unnecessary A person’s native language has a powerful influence on him After all, he has been speaking his language since before he can remember His family, his friends, even complete strangers – everyone around him uses that language Under such circumstances, it is only natural that a person would have the feeling that his language is the most beautiful, the most perfect and the most logical of all languages Therefore, the first thing that one must learn as he begins to study a foreign language is that, each language is the best possible language for the people who use it We would not expect a person from India to think and act exactly like a person from France And we should not expect the languages of India to be exactly like the French language After this fact has been understood and accepted, many of the problems in language learning disappear There are other attitudes which you will have to develop in order to learn a language successfully The most important of these is that learning a language requires constant practice You must not think that because you have seen or heard a word or phrase one time, or five times or ten times, that you really know it and know how to use it You must be ready to repeat new lessons again until you can really use them, automatically, without having to think about them Many students have the idea that if they can memorize long list of vocabulary words they will be learning the language Learning a language is much more than that In the early stage of studying a language, we must learn more important things, such as pronunciation and grammatical structure After the student can use the grammatical structure, he can then begin to increase his vocabulary Learning new vocabulary without knowing the grammatical structure of the language is something like trying to build a house without using a plan Another important thing to remember is that it is not necessary to begin with a lot of reading or writing in the foreign language Reading and writing lead to many very special problems which may complicate learning for the beginning student The most important thing of all in learning a language is to have patience If you keep working steadily, day after day, constantly practicing the language and using it at every opportunity, you will learn to speak a language well Vocabulary Number Words Explanation Circumstances  [countable, usually plural] the conditions and facts that are connected with and affect a situation, an event or an action  circumstances [plural] the conditions of a person’s life, especially the money they have  [uncountable] (formal) situations and events that affect and influence your life and that are not in your control Memorize  Memorize something to learn something carefully so that you can remember it exactly Complicate  Complicate something to make something more difficult to do, understand or deal with steadily constantly  gradually and in an even and regular way  without any change or interruption  all the time; repeatedly MY OPINION ABOUT THE READING: This is a matter which I am interested The reading gives me some interesting suggestions to improve my language learning ability I am very satisfied with the idea that language learning must be associated with use and use anywhere, anywhere when there is an opportunity That will help us practice language and help us overcome barriers when learning foreign languages 3 Money is the root of all evil Money is the instrument of exchange, helping in buying and selling and also in fixing a value on things and commodities It may be in metal or in paper With the market getting more and more complicated, there are other negotiable instruments which are as good as the minted coins or the printed notes Money gives purchasing power but this power is not absolute as it is on various factors In such a case it is termed currency and according to their purchasing power they are termed hard, soft and weak Though coins and notes are issued by the Government of the country, there is a limit to their minting Let us see why money is needed It is simply because it helps the processor to buy things The days of battering are gone though it is indirectly resorted to at international level Money is helpful as a standard of price Money helps the owner to have power not only in buying things but also in influencing many human activities Money is used for good things such as using it to build a temple, a church or a museum Great educational institutions can be built Students can be helped by providing them with scholarships in furthering their studies The Nobel Prize would not have been there but for the huge sum of money earned by Alfred Nobel Money can buy men as it does things Thus money plays an important role in fighting and winning elections Money mars men’s and women’s morals It is the evil influence in corrupting people “Sell out” is the new term used for bribery There are people who could anything for the sake of money Moneyed people can buy many things which the poor cannot With the power of money, individuals as well as states can dictate terms The Middle East countries have found new wealth because of their oil deposits and they have become a very powerful group This kind of power should not go to one’s head One should remember that the money coming into him was by chance He must not use it for evil purposes But wherever there is evil there is usually money involved Other motivating forces for evil action are jealousy, vengeance, hatred and so on Money is normally the fruit of labour The question is how one spends that money Great thinkers have suggested that one who has money enough and enough to spare must look upon himself as the trustee of the money and see to it that it is spent in a wise and useful way There is nothing good or evil about money It depends on how one puts it to The same money which could help bring relief to the suffering million, can be used to build up armaments The hope of getting money spurs one into action The power decides how to spend the money Money can be used morally or immorally A morally strong man may not use money in evil ways and vice versa Vocabulary Number Words Negotiable Explanation Absolute  total and complete  [only before noun] used, especially in spoken English, to give emphasis to what you are saying  definite and without any doubt or confusion  (of a legal decision) final  not limited or restricted  existing or measured independently and not in relation to something else Influencing  to have an effect on the way that somebody behaves or thinks, especially by giving them an example to follow  influence something | influence how, where, etc… to have an effect on a particular situation and the way that it develops Institutions  [countable] a large important organization that has a particular purpose, for example, a university or bank  [countable] a custom or system that has existed for a long time among a particular group of people  [uncountable] the act of starting or introducing something such as a system or a law  [countable] (informal, humorous) a person who is well known because they have been in a particular place or job for a long time Trustee  a person or an organization that has control of money or property that has been put into  that you can discuss or change before you make an agreement or a decision  that you can exchange for money or give to another person in exchange for money a trust for somebody  a member of a group of people that controls the financial affairs of a charity or other organization MY OPINION ABOUT THE READING: Great article! The author has clarified the problem of using money cautiously coins always have great attraction for every human being But money is just a means to satisfy human needs, not to make money a goal At that time, you will depend on it and at that time, the money will spread a lot of sins! The influence of movies and television on people’s behavior Do movies and television affect our behavior? A special concern is whether movies and television make children and society more violent I believe that movies and television influence our behavior, both for the better and for the worse Movies make people more violent The more we see violent acts on television, the less sensitive we become to them Eventually violence doesn’t seem wrong we may even commit violent acts ourselves This is especially true because we don’t always realize that violence has consequences Actors can be killed and come back for another movie Sometimes we confuse that with reality We forget that killing someone is permanent Movies and television also influence our behavior because they make us less active Looking at films is a passive activity If we watch too much, we become unhealthy, both mentally and physically We stop using our own imagination when we see things acted out for us Mental laziness becomes physical laziness; we’d rather watch sports on to than play sports ourselves we’d rather visit with the characters on “Seinfeld” or “Friends” than go chat with our own neighbors Imaginary people have exciting lives Is it any wonder that some people would rather live a fantasy life than their own? Of course, watching movies and television can also be good for us It can give us a broader window on the world For example, seeing movies can expose us to people of different races and cultures We can then overcome some prejudices more easily Recently there have been more handicapped people in films, and this also helps reduce prejudice The best influence on our behavior is that movies and television reduce stress Watching films, we can escape our own problems for a little while Also, sometime movies show positive ways to resolve problems we all face While TV and movies shouldn’t be a way to hide from life, sometimes they can help us cope It is true that movies and television can influence our behavior negatively However, I also believe that they influence our behaviors in positive ways How they affect you depends on how much you watch, what you watch, and how you respond to what you watch Vocabulary Number Words Sensitive      Explanation aware of and able to understand other people and their feelings able to understand art, music and literature and to express yourself through them easily offended or upset that you have to treat with great care because it may offend people or make them angry or embarrassed reacting quickly or more than usual to something  sensitive (to something) able to measure very small changes Permanent lasting for a long time or for all time in the future; existing all the time  [uncountable, countable] the ability to create pictures in your mind; the part of your mind that does this  [uncountable] something that you have imagined rather than something that exists  [uncountable] the ability to have new and exciting ideas Imagination Prejudices [uncountable, countable] an unreasonable dislike of or preference for a person, group, custom, etc., especially when it is based on their race, religion, sex, etc Handicapped  suffering from a mental or physical handicap  the handicapped noun [plural] people who are handicapped MY OPINION ABOUT THE READING: Movies and TV have a great influence on human behavior The article analyzed the effects of movies and television on human behavior Including positive behaviors and negative behaviors What we need to is limit the negatives that movies and television bring and promote positive things I think it is important to promote the influence of movies and television in teaching people skills, especially young people, who spend a lot of time on movies and television 5 Convenience in processing food today The twentieth century has brought with it many advances With those advances, human lives have changed dramatically In some ways life is worse, but mostly it is better Changes in food preparation methods, for example, have improved our lives greatly The convenience of preparing food today is amazing Even stoves have gotten too slow for us Microwave cooking is much easier We can press a few buttons and a meal is completely cooked in just a short time People used to spend hours preparing an oven-cooked meal, and now they can use that time for other, better things Plus, there are all kinds of portable, prepackaged foods we can buy Heat them in the office microwave, and lunch at work is quick and easy Food preparation today allows for more variety With refrigerators and freezers, we can preserve a lot of different foods in our homes Since technology makes cooking so much faster, people are willing to make several dishes for even a small meal Parents are more likely to let children be picky, now that they can easily heat them up some prepackaged macaroni and cheese on the side Needless to say, adults living in the same house may have very different eating habits as well If they don’t want to cook a lot of different dishes, it’s common now to eat out at restaurants several times a week Healthful eating is also easier than ever now When people cook, they use new fat substitutes and cooking sprays to cut fat and calories This reduces the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol Additionally, we can buy fruits and vegetable fresh, frozen or canned They are easy to prepare, so many of us eat more of those nutritious items daily A hundred years ago, you couldn’t imagine the process of taking some frozen fruit and ice from the freezer, adding some low-fat yogurt from a plastic cup and some juice from a can in the refrigerator, and whipping up a low-fat smoothie in the blender! Our lifestyle is fast, but people still like good food What new food preparation technology has given us is more choices Today, we can prepare food that is more convenient, healthier, and of greater variety than ever before in history Vocabulary Number Words Prepackaged Preserve Picky Macaroni Explanation (of goods, especially food) put into packages before being sent to shops/stores to be sold  preserve something to keep a particular quality, feature, etc.; to make sure that something is kept  [often passive] to keep something in its original state in good condition  preserve something to prevent something, especially food, from decaying by treating it in a particular way  preserve somebody/something (from something) to keep somebody/something alive, or safe from harm or danger (of a person) liking only particular things and difficult to please pasta in the shape of hollow tubes Smoothie  (informal) a man who dresses well and talks very politely and confidently but who is often not honest or sincere  a drink made of fruit or fruit juice mixed with milk or ice cream MY OPINION ABOUT THE READING: With the development of science and technology, food processing is increasingly easy However, processing food too easily with support tools such as microwave ovens will sometimes cause incalculable harms to human health It will alter food texture and make our digestion and absorption difficult In my opinion, the best way to protect your health is that we should not be too dependent on convenient processing equipment for food ... a passive activity If we watch too much, we become unhealthy, both mentally and physically We stop using our own imagination when we see things acted out for us Mental laziness becomes physical... teaching people skills, especially young people, who spend a lot of time on movies and television 5 Convenience in processing food today The twentieth century has brought with it many advances With
