Aim: providing feedback on the students’ writing and correcting errors of their papers, getting students to revise and edit their work, evaluating and doing things with the completed pie[r]

(1)Lesson plan Teaching Writing Unit 12: Music Class description: 50 10th grade students (Ss) Level: pre-intermediate Time: 45 minutes Objectives: At the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: + writing a profile of person Assumed knowledge:  Ss have already known some vocabularies items related to the topic Anticipated problems  T prepares some activities for pre-writing and while-writing to avoid boredom for Ss in the class Teaching aids:  Book, blackboard, chalks, Stage Aim Technique Teacher’s activities Warm up Aim: Stimulate T greets the class Ss before the Guessing game - T divides Ss into big groups (A, B & C) to play a new lesson game called Guessing game Technique: - T gives instructions for the game: Give the Three groups take turn to play Each time, one member from one group goes to the board, and chooses a instruction (say- picture of one singer or musician Their task is to do-check) and let actions, use body language or english so that the rest of their group can guess who that singer is They are not Ss play allowed to speak in Vietnamese or name of singer 30 Students’ activities - Ss greets T - Ss listen to T (2) competition seconds for each picture After 40 seconds if the group can’t guess what the sport is, the other groups take their game: Guessing turn game One point for each correctly guessed picture The group with the largest number of correct names of singer will be the winner - T makes a model with the first picture to help Ss fully understand how to play - T checks Ss’ understanding of the instructions: “How many groups we have? Group A, where are you? Group B? Group C? “What will you if you are your group’s representative? ( Can the group’s representative speak Vietnamese? - T lets Ss play the game, and control the class - T checks and gets the whole class to count the points to decide which group is the winner - Ss answer T’s questions - Ss join the game actively Prewriting Aim: encourage student to write Help students to prepare material for the composing stage, and organize them in the best way - Ask Ss to review the tense of verb using to write a profile + Use the verbs in the simple past tense: S + Ved/V2… - Review the prepositions and conjunctions using to write a profile if necessary * in + year (in 1997) * on + day/month/year (on November 15, 1997) * be born + in + place (be born in HAI DUONG) * Conjunctions: All in all, after that, and, etc - Review the simple past tense - Listen to the review of prepositions and conjunctions - Write down into the notebook - Give some example if T asks - While Writing Aim: controlled writing to free writing Task 1: - Ask students to open the textbook and turn on page 129, Task1 - Ask Ss to works in pairs, read carefully Task and follow the instruction - Go around the class to help if Ss need - Call some Ss to read aloud the answer - Correct the pronunciation mistakes and give feedback - Suggested answer: He learnt to play music when he was young Scott learnt to play works of composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart as well as to compose music He quickly became famous His tunes were wonderful mixture of classical European and African beats which were known as Ragtime All in all, he wrote 50 piano rags, and was called the King of Ragtime Work in pairs - Read carefully Task in the textbook, use the prompts to make up complete sentences about Scott Joplin, a famous American musician - Do the Task with their partners - Ask T when having some problems - Raise hand and read aloud the answers (3) Scott Joplin died in 1917 Task 2: - Ask Ss to open the text book and turn on page 129, Task - Have Ss find out which verbs or preposition using to write Van Cao’s profile - Prompt if Ss can’t give the answer - Ask Ss to pay attention to the tense of verbs again + Name: Van Cao + Born: 15 – 11 – 1923 (be born, on) + Place of birth: Nam Dinh (in) + Family: poor workers (into) + Start composing music: when very young (be) + First song: 1939, quickly become famous (and, in) + Tien Quan Ca (National Anthem): 1944 (Write, in) + Artistic works: songs, poems, paintings (not only, write, but also, draw) + Died: 10-7-1995 (on) Activity 4:- Ask students to write a completed profile of Van Cao or Michael Jackson + Name: Michael Jackson + Born: August 29, 1958 + Place of birth: Indiana + Family: an African American working-class family + Begin his solo career: 1970 + Become famous: 1980 + The best selling album: Thriller + Died: June 25, 2009 Van Cao was born in Nam Định on November 15, 1923, into a poor workers’ family He started composing music when he was very young He wrote the first song in 1939 and then quickly became famous Tien Quan Ca, the National Anthem of Vietnam was written by Van Cao in 1944 Van Cao not only wrote songs and poems but also draw paintings He died on July 10, 1995 Văn Cao is known as a very talented musician and highly appreciated by the Vietnamese people Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Indiana, into an African American working-class family He began his solo career in 1970 and became famous in 1980 Thriller was his best selling album He died on June 25, 2009 Work individually - Open the textbook, page 129, Task - Read again Task to find out how to use prepositions, supplements, articles, etc to answer (4) Post writing Aim: providing feedback on the students’ writing and correcting errors of their papers, getting students to revise and edit their work, evaluating and doing things with the completed pieces of writing Feedback and correction: Now, exchange your writing to other groups next to you You should help each group find some mistakes you know Underline the mistake you find and add “sp” if it is spelling mistake, and add “tense” for wrong tense usage -go around and see some common mistakes of students in the letters -write common mistakes on the board, and correct them with whole class Revising: Look at your papers, revise mistakes you have Editing: Reread your writing to correct errors and mistakes in grammar, vocabulary and so on Evaluating: -collect writing paper of whole class (5)
