stage of doing this research Without them, the past couples of months would have been more stressful and challenging i ABSTRACT The research aims to seek investigation into two main areas: the manifestation of intercultural sensitivity and the changes regarding personal growth experienced by Vietnamese university students doing short-term exchange in ASEAN countries In order to achieve the established targets, qualitive approach was adopted for data collection and analysis Specifically, the researcher utilized three data collection instruments namely questionnaire, interview and documents analysis Data obtained through these methods were closely examined using content analysis approach In the end, the researcher was able to generate several conclusions based on the analyzed data In terms of intercultural sensitivity, students showed a transition from ethnocentrism to ethnorelativism throughout their exchange as they started from stereotypes and lack of understanding about host countries to development of appreciative attitude and willingness to integrate into the host community However, despite reaching different stages in the ethnorelative category, the students still expressed ethnocentric attitude towards certain aspects of host countries such as food or religious habits As for personal growth, the data revealed that after exchange, students experienced improvement regarding emotional resilience, openness/ flexibility, perceptual acuity and personal autonomy Specifically, they were able to handle different emotional issues, became more acceptant towards cultural differences and attentive to their international friends Most importantly, several students reflected on their recognition of their self identity and increased pride in being an ASEAN experience in Indonesia, yet I still feel the tremendous impacts of it on different aspects of my life In 2017, I decided to go on a one semester exchange under the SHARE scholarship program at Universitas Indonesia, located in Depok, Jakarta For me, the whole experience was amazing and unforgettable Not only did I have more friends, but I also came to appreciate and understand the cultural values, traditions and practices of my host country Further comprehension of Indonesia and ASEAN nations, as well as a sense of identity are the main things that the exchange granted me, which I had no expectation of receiving after my exchange Upon returning; however, it was rather difficult for me initially to readapt to my life in home country, partly due to the comments from others about my exchange experience: “It was such a waste of time, you should have gone to a more developed country rather than Indonesia; How come you chose Indonesia, it is a Muslim country; …” These comments became great distress and disappointment to me, which lead to my determination to prove that my short-term exchange experience in a “less developed nation” is as rewarding as any other exchange programs in other developed countries According to DeGraaf, Slagter, Larsen and Ditta (2013), there has been a proliferation of short-term study abroad implemented by higher educational institutions worldwide Vietnam is not the exception of this rising trend as an increasing number of students have begun to engage in short-term exchange programs which last for one semester to a year, apart from long-term study experiences Such shift has “intensified the need for assessment” over the influence of these programs on their participants (Paras et al, 2019) As a result, a large number of researches have been conducted on the impacts of short-term hard like, I fast for five days and I barely could work so I was working on my project but I made statue and I really had to focus I worked from 11 a.m to a.m, so when I fast, I really couldn't work I couldn't understand how they felt, but my classmates, they still fast for the whole period They still keep working and stay very calm, I must say But some of them, after fasting for about week, they said, okay i don't care you know And still some of my friends they are Muslims, but it is just in the ID card you know So it is really different, I can't really tell, maybe because it is my university is an art school so they don't care that much I: After you finished your exchange, how you think you have changed? L: How to say this, but I was like reborned, or evolved It is a yeah, I think for example, it was really difficult for me to attend a similar art school in Vietnam because of the competitiveness There are lots of people with good skills and I don't have such skills, so with this scholarship I had great chance to attend an art school in Indonesia, which gives me the belief, the trust that I can this Before I never believed that I can craft, I never believe I would have enough patience to craft a mask, never believe that I could draw I though that I was bad at those things and I don't the head for that I just theater and theater is different from visual art This time I applied for visual art I met my project and I made a big statue which my local friends, said that you must be crazy, noone starts working like, making this big statue in their first time ever working with clay I just thought that it is my first time doing this and I had nothing to lose And then of course for someone who knows their ability and well-prepared then they may can finish that statue for or months, but for me it was months It was a huge different but it brought me huge effect that I start to believe in myself that I could months was enough for such huge change It gave me my belief and strengthened it I: So when you returned home, did you have any difficulties adjusting back to your daily life? L: I had huge difficulties, so Jogja is a really chill and laid back place Especially I stayed at the outskirts of the city, next to my university And people were super chill and super santai, super laid back Because of that I learnt more about myself, 74 to develop my inner self The inner growth is huge within my time there And because it was really chill there, I had time to reflection, but when I come back to Hanoi, and you know Hanoi is the city of making things done, and things happen everyday You can see one night there are hundreds of events here and there And my surrounding friends, they are always pursuing something Like everyday they learn new things, for me I learned how to slow down myself When I came back, it was a huge shock for me I felt like oh my god how can I adapt with this quick fast rhythm, and so I was really bouncing back and forth between adapting to this rhythm or stay in my new skills of laying back and reflecting on everything I And I have been fighting like that for five months since I'm back So it is really difficult I: I see, thank you so much for your sharing and answers I will end the call now 75 APPENDIX C: WRITTEN REFLECTIONS Appendix C.1 Student (aged 23, female, exchange in Depok, Indonesia, year, Darmasiswa scholarship program) Những điều nhớ Indo Con người giống lồi phức tạp, lúc cịn kêu gào mong Lúc lại vẩn vơ nhớ Indo Lại nghĩ, mà cịn Indo, làm này, kia… Universitas Indonesia – Trường đại học quốc dân Chắc chắn rồi, điều làm nhớ kết thúc năm Darmasiswa UI Tông màu chủ đạo UI màu vàng, màu vàng chuẩn mực đầy quyền lực kiêu hãnh Nhớ lúc sáng sáng, vèo để vào lớp Cả năm nhiều, thành quen, nên luyện việc siêu nhanh, đặc biệt so với người Indo Buồn cười chỗ, nguyên học kỳ khơng hơm học Sáng dậy vật vã đau khổ, kiểu phải học tới tận học kỳ giời, đồng bọn Darmasiswa trường khác từ hồi rồi! Ấy mà xong Xe bus UI chấm vàng đáng u khác mà tự hứa khơng phép quên Chiếc school bus siêu cưng chạy trường theo tuyến khác nhau, trường rộng khoảng cách khoa thuộc loại khơng thể đùa đâu Mình nhớ tuyến chạy qua Teknik/Engineering bảng xanh, tuyến chạy qua Hukum/Law bảng đỏ Nhớ yellow bus nhớ câu “Makasih Pak!” giòn tan bạn sinh viên lần xuống Văn hóa cảm ơn người Indo thật đáng học tập, người ta cảm ơn tài xế lái xe điều tất yếu, lẽ tự nhiên chẳng có cần ép buộc hay rao giảng À, bus trường ấy, vào đợt Ramadhan lặn tăm khoảng iftar (sau mặt trời lặn, lúc bắt đầu ăn sau ngày dài không ăn uống thứ gì), “đình cơng” tầm tiếng ngày, từ 5h chiều tới 7h tối 76 UI sắc màu khác, màu xanh Hơn 70% trường màu xanh trường vốn khu rừng, nhìn đâu thấy cây, có loại lạ lẫm chưa thấy Tầm Indo mùa mưa, có buổi ban trưa mưa xối xả đổ xuống khiến tán rung rung, lại có buổi chiều tối ảm đạm mưa tn rơi cánh rừng trơng thật buồn Nếu muốn camping hay teambuilding gì, chẳng cần đâu xa, bạn hồn tồn làm điều khn viên trường mà Nỗi nhớ màu xanh Lý gọi UI trường đại học quốc dân đến từ người làm thầy năm UI năm thấy nghĩa dịch vụ giáo dục tương xứng tới đồng tiền Darmasiswa cho phép học free, phần đơng bạn khơng Nhìn khoản tiền bạn bỏ ra, thấy hoàn toàn xứng đáng với mức học phí Cảm ơn UI, cảm ơn thầy giáo, cảm ơn lớp học ngoại khóa khiến trình độ tiếng Indo lên vèo Giảng viên dạy tiếng tâm huyết, tận tình, hiểu tâm lý người nước đành, mà giảng viên dạy khoa thơng thường xịn xị chẳng Mình khơng nói nhiều thầy giáo khoa mình, khen đủ post này, có lần tiếp xúc với giảng viên khoa Teknik, thấy thầy giáo sư hẳn hoi, giúp đỡ sinh viên nhiệt tình thân thiện lắm Nghĩ tới UI, chẳng bở qua buổi đêm, lành, êm ru tĩnh lặng, dạo trường Buổi tối lặng yên, khơng nguy hiểm, có xe tuần tra Patroli qua Thế nên, thoải mái mà dạo đêm, hít căng lồng ngực bầu khơng khí cỏ tươi sau mưa ban tối Mà UI dễ thương lắm, có lần từ trạm tàu về, có bạn nữ xe máy dừng lại, đề nghị chở tận nhà Hồi giáo khắt khe, quy tắc & trọng tính cơng 77 Về Việt Nam rồi, làm có chuyện tỉnh dậy lúc rưỡi sáng azan (tiếng gọi môn đồ trước buổi cầu nguyện) nhỉ? Về rồi, khơng thấy xung quanh mình, trái phải người Hồi giáo, nữ trùm hijab, nam mặc đồ truyền thống người Hồi Về Việt Nam rồi, lúc muốn ăn thịt lợn có, chịu tình trạng thèm thịt lợn suốt tháng trời Về Việt Nam rồi, nhìn ngồi đường trai gái thể tình cảm thật tự do, khơng có nhắc nhở hay nhìn với ánh mắt nghiêm khắc Về Việt Nam rồi, tự nhiên thấy bảng hiệu halal tiệm ăn, hay khn đầu trùm kín thân quen đến lạ Chỉ muốn đến gần họ nói “Assalamualaikum” mà thơi :) “Terima Kasih!” tròn vành rõ chữ “Cảm ơn” tiếng Indo có dạng: dạng ngắn dạng dài Trong hoàn cảnh trang trọng văn viết, người ta dùng dạng đầy đủ Terima Kasih Trong sống bình thường hàng ngày, người ta nói Makasih (ya!) mà thơi Mỗi lần mua hàng, nhân viên đáp lại dạng ngắn – vốn đơn giản thơng dụng, mà ln nói câu, với tôn trọng dễ dàng nhận thấy năm Indo, ln u lúac làm “con cưng” đất nước này, đâu mua giá vé địa, hỏi nhân viên tư vấn nhiệt tình Người Indo khơng phải thuộc nước có ngoại hình xuất sắc, tin đi, tử tế khiến bạn nhớ khn mặt ăn ảnh hay vóc dáng có cách phối đồ hồn hảo khơng chê vào đâu Thật lạ, nhân viên Indo cịn hiểu mình nói tiếng Indo nhân viên Sài Gịn nói tiếng Việt “Trái sầu riêng khổng lồ” Jakarta khơng phải nơi dễ sống Khó khăn lớn sống thành phố có nhiều người, bon chen, đông đúc Mỗi lần siêu thị gần trường vào lúc sẩm tối, thường phải đợi tàu điện chạy qua Chuyến tàu lên Jakarta người, mà chuyến tàu Bogor lúc đơng, ken cứng người người Tức sao? Là người ta lên Jakarta làm việc buổi sáng nhiều, trở nhà vào lúc cuối ngày Khuôn mặt mỏi mệt Rất nhiều lúc, muốn dành tặng từ “nheo nhóc” cho người phụ nữ kèm đứa nhỏ khoang 78 tàu Khoảng cách giàu nghèo Indo lớn, nên người giàu người ta xe ô tô riêng rồi, người “không giàu lắm” chọn tàu điện mà Phụ nữ mà ngồi khoang hay khoang cuối, chắn khơng với chồng khoang dành riêng cho nữ Họ với đứa đen nhẻm, mũi dãi lòng thòng, nhiều lại tự hỏi họ làm gì, làm có đủ ăn không Nghĩ vậy, nước lại ước có tàu điện, cần tàu điện bình thường Indo (chẳng phải ngầm chẳng cao) tốt Xe bus Transjakarta nhà người ta có đường riêng để đi, xe bus Sài thành cần bấm còi quang quác lượn thật vào bến, chẳng cần biết đứa xe máy tơm tép đằng sau Văn hóa mall siêu sang Văn hóa Jakarta ư? Là mua sắm Indo có nhiều nhất, mức độ tiêu thụ lớn Đông Nam Á Cũng dễ hiểu, dân số đơng, Jakarta cịn thành phố thủ đơng dân thứ giới, sau Tokyo Người Indo chuộng mua sắm mall, nên thành phố thấy mall Những nhãn hiệu quần áo sang chảnh giới dễ dàng tìm thấy Đến Indo, bạn chẳng thấy tiệm trà sữa hay cửa tiệm cafe đường Đơn giản tất bị “hốt” vào trung tâm thương mại Nhớ lúc Grand Indonesia, vào Koi tầng 3B, West Mall làm ly black macchiato lấy sức window shopping Uống Koi Indo, Sing, Malay, Việt thấy Koi Indo tuyệt nhất, có 17k rupiah, tính tỉ giá cao tầm 32k, Việt Nam đắt mà chẳng ngon miếng Có nhiều người hỏi lại chọn sang Indo sống, lại có câu hỏi học tiếng Indo làm biết sau khơng dùng đến Đúng, nhiều người tuổi dùng năm vừa để xây dựng nghiệp riêng họ, cịn khơng làm cho CV long lanh thêm chút phần kinh nghiệm làm việc thời gian ấy, học bổng khơng cho phép làm, mà chẳng có thời gian mà Thế nhưng, chẳng nuối tiếc, nói “ước gì” hay “giá như” khơng 79 chọn Indo, khơng nhận Darmasiswa năm năm biết hồn tồn sống tự lập, sống tốt đằng khác Sóng gió khơng phải khơng có, qua năm ấy, thứ học khơng dừng lại ngơn ngữ, mà cịn mở rộng thành học võ pencak silat này, học vẽ nhuộm vải batik này, học nhảy truyền thống Mình hồn tồn đắm chìm văn hóa Indo, biết cách mở lịng đón nhận điều Nếu khơng sống Indo năm ấy, biết, hóa Hồi giáo đâu có tiêu cực tưởng, động đất nhiều lúc “nhè nhẹ” thống chóng mặt thơi, hay việc thiên nhiên Indo đẹp sững sờ đến Sống Indo rồi, thấy đôi chút tiếc nuối cho Sing – đất nước nhân tạo có đẹp, lại khơng mạnh thiên nhiên Hay biển Penang (Malay) thấy đáng làm học trị cho vơ vàn bãi biển vắt, ánh lên sắc màu rặng san hô hay bầy cá nemo quấn quýt chân người xứ sở vạn đảo Khơng sai đâu nói Indo đất nước thứ mình, nơi đặt lại nhiều mến thương, nhìn ngắm đất nước với hài lịng, mãn nguyện đầy trìu mến Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, tháng Mười Một 2018 80 Sống Indo thích ghét chi? Đến thời điểm này, sống Indonesia vừa vặn nửa năm Thời gian chưa dài, đủ để hiểu phần đất nước, người Trong viết này, chia sẻ điều thích khơng thích xứ sở vạn đảo theo quan điểm cá nhân nhé! Những điều thích Indonesia Được thiên nhiên ưu đặc biệt Nếu bạn người yêu thiên nhiên, thích dành cuối tuần để khám phá nơi nơi khác nhà, bạn cảm thấy Indonesia thiên đường Thường người nghĩ tới Bali tên đương nhiên nhắc Indonesia, bạn người Indo nói Bali cịn tiếng Indonesia Kỳ thực, Indonesia có nhiều Bali Là quốc gia có 17 nghìn hịn đảo khác nhau, từ nơi Indonesia, bạn dễ dàng tận hưởng vitamin Sea vào dịp cuối tuần Biển – đảo Indonesia đặc biệt xanh, tương đối cát trắng mịn Nhớ có lần cậu bạn lớp người Hàn kể lại Hàn Quốc khơng thể tìm thấy bãi biển Pulau Seribu, quần đảo cách Jakarta chừng tàu, Ngoài biển ra, Indonesia cịn có nhiều thứ thú vị khơng Từ thác nước, núi lửa, hồ kiến tạo từ núi lửa thảo nguyên, trảng cỏ (savana), thiên nhiên Indonesia đưa bạn từ ngac nhiên tới ngạc nhiên khác Mình thường nói, nhà chưa biết đến động đất gì, sang chiêm ngưỡng núi lửa hồ kiến tạo từ núi lửa, cảm thấy câu “đi ngày học sàng khôn” hết Con người ơn hịa 81 Quay lại tơn giáo chút, Indonesia đất nước Hồi giáo đông dân giới Hồi giáo đề cao ơn hịa, giữ bình tĩnh, họ hay nhắc đến từ “tenang” nghĩa “keep calm” Chính lẽ đó, đường bạn khơng đau đầu tiếng cịi xe đâu, ngạc nhiên chưa? This is the class of Identity and popular culture The lecturer was a passionate person She ignited that feeling of engagement in class without making knowledge too hard to reach Together with Rasgen (Race, gender, social relations) class, I was introduced to a way of seeing the world: postmodernism (a term which I could only name a long time after leaving UI) I always remember this one activity that requires me to write words that describe my identity I asked myself: what is it? Is it bounded by national borders, by religion, by biological sex, by my social status, my race, my income, my inner aspiration or my profession? Where have I been and what have been influential to me personally? What did I associate myself with? I guess it shouldn’t be It can be fluid in a sense that you can add more to this mixture of selves that are floating inside It can be constructed by new cross-border experience, by international engagement even in the cultural and intellectual input of everyday lives That is one concept that went a long way with me until this day and it is one of the things SHARE scholarship has granted me as an extra-added value that I did not expect to get Theoretically, it is not entirely easy to adopt this sense of identity overnight I had the exposure, the friends, the network and the idea that reinforce these ideas within me 86 And then there are accompanying programs and events after the scholarship that I was very very fortunate to join We had this trend of organizing “international group trip” to visit places in Indonesia I had this gang of friends from Australia and SHARE to visit and find out the charming streets and lanes of Bandung We even got invited to a wedding in which we were the guests and bringing the presents from the husband’s family to wife’s family I chose to wear Batik and blended in like a pro! Culture may take different places and take different forms, but the happiness and celebrative atmosphere shared in a wedding is always the same! We stayed up, well predictably afterwards played guitar and sang together cheesy international pop songs before heading back home talking about our future plans, marriage!?, family expectations and other things Those precious moments I would never forget and made me feel a deeper sense of what it is really like to be ASEAN friends This is the farewell party, and the photo of the people who I remember dearly though most of them don’t use Facebook that often My exchange student community and the always exciting Whatsapp group chat! Flying back to Hanoi, I was filled with different feelings, missing the friends, the new community I was gradually integrated into, the enormous loving forest of UI, a small piece of my heart which was left in the fresh smell of humidity mixed with the saltiness of teardrops Then I was generously offered to join the First Student Mobility Forum in the heart of Manila, coinciding with 50th celebration of ASEAN as a solidary block I met again with so many dear friends, exchanged all sorts of casual to deep conversations with them I even participated in a mock session on internalization of education as the representative speaker of Vietnam I felt the warmth and welcoming atmosphere of the city The eloquent and outspoken friends of the Philippines were the best host! Through the discussions at this event, I reflected upon my experience as an exchange student, how I tore down walls of stereotypes, how I adapted to be part of the student community in a new place, how similar or different the two curriculums, methods of evaluation and class dynamics were The event was designed in a way that facilitated 87 networking and making friends across borders The sense of an ASEAN identity was reinforced in me and I felt amazing Last October, this small but amazing workshop was held in Bangkok A new land of vibrance and hospitality welcomed me This special event focused on how students can create an alumni network following the model of Erasmus and extend the benefits and the already held bonds among students of ASEAN May helped me with her amazing Thai knowledge on the bus, and Thip let me inside her cute apartment and brought me on a small tour Roger was more than friendly, sharing with me his experience regarding so many important things in life and how he moved from a banker to an education specialist with confidence I realize how lucky I was to meet with nice and generous people who are not hesitant at all to help me and guide me They could be anyone, but they happened to be ASEAN citizens Now, every ASEAN nation I go, I could feel a bit more home and reunite with my friends Upon ending this note, I want to express my sincere thanks to SHARE scholarship, the organizing team of all these events (Ms Karina, Mr Arief and many others), the people who had the idea and made the scholarship a reality I couldn’t have had an amazing part of my youth without you I was an applicant, just like anyone else, and I realized that I had no way to communicate back my gratitude and how I was very satisfied with both the quality and the meaning of each and every small project Through this small writing, I want to send my thankful heart to you all, to spread my love to my ASEAN friends on my friendlist This is how I constructed an ASEAN identity, and I loved it 88 ...
