Welcome to Los Angeles, and more specifically, welcome to Hollywood - the home of movies and movie stars! Now, before we start the tour, I'm going to tell you a little bit about some of the most important events that happen here every year. As you know, people in the film world love the glamour of awards ceremonies, film festivals and film premieres. Most of you will have heard of the Cannes Film Festival in France - and many of you will have seen the stars on TV being interviewed outside famous cinemas in London or New York just before a premiere. But probably the most famous show in the world is the Academy Awards, best known as the Oscars. The show takes place in late February or early March when all the other important awards ceremonies have already taken place. It's held at the Kodak Theatre - which you'll see later - and, on the night, giant, golden, 24-foot-high Oscar statues stand outside the building. These days of course, it's a glamorous and glittering ceremony that everybody in the film world wants to go to, but it wasn't always so popular. The first ceremony was held in 1927 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and there were less than 250 people there. Compare that with today, when more than a billion people turn on their TVs to watch the show. 1 When does the Oscars usually take place? It's held every year in January and, although the awards aren’t considered as important as the Oscars, they are still very important. One of the reasons for this is that they sometimes predict the Oscar winners. The first ceremony was held in 1944 at the 20th Century Fox studios, but since then, they've been held every year at different places such as the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The awards are organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This is made up of journalists from different countries around the world who write about all the film gossip in Hollywood. The Association is famous for its huge donations to charity. In the past 11 years it has donated more than $5.5 million to different charities. 3 Where does the Golden Globes Awards take place? They were created by a man called John Wilson in 1980. Wilson, who had worked in the film world for many years, decided that many Hollywood actors were too serious. So, he decided to give awards to people for things like the worst acting, screenwriting, songwriting and directing. Many very famous actors, directors and producers have received a Golden Raspberry. Of course, not many people have actually collected their awards and many people have been very angry about them! However, when Halle Berry won the award for worst actress for her performance in Catwoman, she amazed Hollywood when she held her Oscar in one hand and her Razzie in the other and gave an acceptance speech at the Razzie ceremony. 5 What are Golden Raspberry Awards given for?
