I guess that lie down will have to wait a bit longer, too The game shooting season is at its conclusion and I hope that all of you enjoyed some quality time in the field over the past few months Of course, the end of the game season is not the end of opportunities for the true sporting shooter – far from it! There are a few more weeks on the wildfowling calendar for those that shoot below the tidemark Pigeons will continue to provide some amazing and challenging shooting throughout the year Andy Crow has had some good days over the winter rape and shares his expert advice on p14 Lots of estates will offer some roost shooting at the end of the game season too, and this can be great fun and provide opportunity for those that might not have permissions of their own If not pigeons, then corvids will likely be on the pest controller’s agenda as they home in on the maize cover crops that will be topped off any time now Away from live quarry, the clay shooting calendar will start to busy up as the days lengthen and the weather improves and Steve Rawsthorne is giving his tips on how to tackle long crossing targets – a staple of any decent competition but also an essential shot to master in the hunting field We have a selection of clay busting cartridges on test as well to ensure that your practice sessions needn’t break the bank Our gun test this month (p52) is a bit of a curve ball – a triple-barrelled 410 from Akkar It’s often hard to remember that a big reason we all got into shooting is that it is so much fun This gun shoots well and is very affordable, but more importantly, it had even a grizzled old hand like Mike Yardley feeling like a “kid in a toy shop” DOM HOLTAM Editor-In-Chief SUBSCRIPTIONS Subscription queries? SHOOTING NEWS For the very latest news visit www.sportingshooter.co.uk numbers are slightly above average In some western areas such as parts of Ireland and Cornwall, numbers are well above average and it is looking like it will be a reasonably good woodcock season,” explained Dr Hoodless The reasons behind the higher woodcock numbers are not yet completely clear It is possible that conditions in spring on the main breeding grounds in Russia and Scandinavia may have resulted in better chick survival immediately after hatching, when they are vulnerable to cold, wet eding season was better than feared.” T purpose of the GWCT’s research programme is to better understand these annual fluctuations in woodcock numbers and help provide advice that will ensure a stable trend in the long term Dr Hoodless continued: “Many shoots heeded our advice to hold off shooting woodcock until after December to help protect our resident breeders, but numbers this winter are now at a level where shoots adopting a measured approach should be able to take a few.” NGO set to hold fundraising auction supporting the NGO’s work, and in supporting us you will have the reassurance that you are helping to defend gamekeeping and gamekeepers as well as promoting the very best elements of our sport We are always hugely grateful to our supporters who donate lots and would like to thank them in advance for their generosity.” Tim Weston, the NGO’s development officer in the south said: “There is a huge amount of competition out there for auction lots now, but the NGO is an organisation that is close to everyone’s heart, and so we get offered some of the most amazing and spectacular shooting as well as other exceptional opportunities We are keen to continue this tradition by urging le to donate Gamekeepers’ Organisation (NGO) is set to run another auction in 2019, and is currently inviting supporters to donate lots Of particular interest to many bidders are the end-of-season keepers’ days These always attract high bids, but the NGO is also interested in receiving lots for game shooting in all its various forms, including stalking, fishing, duck flighting or grouse shooting Liam Bell, chairman of the NGO said: “All the proceeds from the auction go towards www.sportingshooter.co.uk A number of peers have raised concerns about firearms licensing arrangements, particularly around background medical checks, during the first debate on the government’s offensive weapons bill in the House of Lords Speaking in the debate on January, Lord Shrewsbury noted: “There is no consistency of practice between police forces, nor is there any consistency of the fee charged to the applicant by his or her GP for a medical assessment.” His comments were supported by Lord Caithness, who said problems around background medical checks were leading to a “dislike of legislation” Firearms users have been reporting problems with the medical procedures for a grant or renewal of a licence ever since the Home Office guidance on this issue was introduced in April 2016 The offensive weapons bill contains proposals to ban certain types of rapid firing rifle, although the proposed ban on largecalibre rifles was removed from the bill after a cross-party group of MPs raised concerns about this in the House of Commons Countryside Alliance chief executive, Tim Bonner, commented: “We fully support the objective of this bill to improve public safety, but the best way that can be achieved, in relation to firearms, is to address the ongoing problems around background medical checks “We urge the government to focus their time and energy on this issue, rather than seeking to further restrict lawful gun ownership.” PICTURE: LEE BEEL weather, and compensated for higher mortality The aged 15 and under go free) Man dies while converting oil drums to pheasant feeders A Cambridgeshire man died when the oil drum he was converting into a pheasant feeder exploded 58-year-old Christopher Chatfield from Warboys, Cambridgeshire, was halfway through cutting six drums with a plasma cutter when the third drum exploded, causing the lid to strike him fatally on the head The drum was too damaged to be able to determine what exactly was in it to cause the explosion, but the unopened drums, when inspected, contained gasoline or petroleum CCTV shows a burst of flame as Mr Chatfield cut into the first drum, which he managed to complete, followed by the second drum, after which he turned to the third drum which exploded as soon as he triggered the plasma cutter The oil drums had been sourced from a local MOT garage and were going to be used to make pheasant feeders for the local shoot Mr Chatfield’s death, which occured in April 2017 but just recently made the news, was ruled as an accident, and serves as a very sad reminder to us all to take extra precautions when engaging in DIY activity What’s it all about? There’s lots of conflicting advice and I’m not sure what’s best What are your thoughts? A HOWARD KIRBY replies: I’m fairly clear in my mind about the answer to this At least, I think I am? Dogs need exercise, both physically and mentally, although age and breed type will significantly influence when, where and how much With the gundog breeds, you are taking on a breed, particularly those that are bred primarily for their hunting attributes Because humans have bred these traits in dogs, we are now responsible for a spaniel, HPR or pointer and setter that has been manufactured to hunt like something that is possessed Failure to understand and accommodate this into very early and long-term training of said dog is borderline irresponsible Exercising your dog does not have to mean it can run freelance around the countryside or public places, while introducing itself or chasing everything it comes across Avoiding insulting anyone’s intelligence, this would clearly be dumb and will likely result in difficulty for you and disaster and or heartbreak for the dog that is now injured, lost, killed or confined to being choked by a well-meaning owner on a lead for the rest of its life But enough of the nasty negative stuff! Let’s focus on the fun side Yes, exercise your King Charles Cavalier or English springer spaniel, which, by the way, are bred to be the opposite ends of the hunting spectrum Stating the obvious, the Cavie has been bred to be a delightful companion dog Your Field Trial-bred springer is one of the most mentally powerful hunting dogs you can buy Exercise should be about teaching your dog to focus and look to you for food, affection and What’s a ‘full-mouthed’ dog? PICTURES: NICK RIDLEY Q I recently saw an advert for a Labrador stud where it said he was ‘full-mouthed’ What does this mean and how important is it in a stud dog? I’ve never seen this in an advert before A VICKY PAYNE replies: An adult dog should have 42 teeth, but in some dogs not all the teeth are present On the continent, and in showing classes, it is considered important that a dog has a full set of teeth, as well as a correct ‘bite’ (i.e the teeth line up correctly with no over-bite or under-bite) Most commonly, one or two of the small premolars are missing and this won’t adversely affect how a dog works However, if a dog is missing several premolars – the large molars, for example – or any canine teeth, he may struggle to carry game correctly Missing teeth can be an inherited condition, so while having a full mouth isn’t as important for a breeding dog as a good hip score, it is reassuring to know a stud dog has a full complement of teeth PICTURE: YJ.SUNG / BIT.LY/1RYPA8O Time for walkies! fun Anything less and you risk creating serious problems I hope that’s helpful in association with Going in feet first Q A My youngster tries to catch rabbits with her feet How can I get her to use her mouth? JACKIE DRAKEFORD replies: First, check her mouth for discomfort or tooth problems Assuming all is well, it is normal for many saplings to start by using their feet, especially collie-crosses It sorts itself out from experience, but you can speed the process up by playing games with her that encourage her to use her mouth Throwing a ball for her or getting her to chase a rabbit skin on a flirt pole are ideal methods, and there are dog toys that, when thrown, bounce erratically and make the dog keen to get hold of them Get the largest size and disable the squeaker before use if it has one, as these cause some dogs to bite down hard, which is the last thing you want www.sportingshooter.co.uk 95 DOG BEDDING DOG BEDDING www.kennelmate.co.uk Dogs Beds that Work for Working Dogs ADVERTISING It’s about looking good Gundog Training Equipment Tel: 07970 765637 01902 798167 10% DISCOUNT when you quote SS10 at check out TRANSPORT Lintran K9 award-winning dog equipment transport systems Estate Cars | Dog trailers, pick up’s & vans | All x vehicles Dog & Gun System T: 01673 885959 enquiries@lintran.co.uk www.lintran.co.uk 30 YEARS Lintran (SS), Brentwood House, Lincoln Road, Faldingworth, Market Rasen, Lincs LN8 3SF 96 www.sportingshooter.co.uk If you are looking to create a good impression within the Gundog marketplace, whether it be for training, food or equipment, give Jonathan a call on 01189742525 GUNDOG VET with Vicky Payne Vicky is a keen shooter and qualified vet Vicky runs first aid courses for groups Email vicky@ holisticvetsussex.co.uk for further details m? Dogs can channel air into their nose in two different ways: one channel goes straight to the lungs, but the other contains olfactory receptor cells and allows dogs to process scent while breathing in and out Dogs can even identify which of their nostrils is picking up the strongest scent, helping them to locate the source of the smell Gundog breeds have wide open nostrils, unlike some of the toy breeds, so rarely have breathing problems Although it is normal for the nose to be wet, you should take note of any discharge from the nose A snotty discharge from both nostrils can be seen with some allergies or viral infections, but discharge from one nostril, especially if it is bloody, could suggest a more serious problem such as a grass seed up the nostril, a fungal infection or even a tumour NUCLEAR SCLEROSIS Many middle-aged and older dogs develop a blue tint to their eyes which owners can fear is a cataract In fact, most are a benign hardening of the lens, called nuclear sclerosis It is thought to develop as the lens grows more fibres throughout life but can’t get any bigger I get owners to think of one sheet of clingfilm which is clear compared to clingfilm on the roll More than half of dogs over nine years old may be affected, and your vet can quickly tell the difference between a cataract and nuclear sclerosis The good news is that nuclear sclerosis rarely affects a dog’s eyesight significantly and needs no treatment ■ PICTURE: NICK RIDLEY Neutering can have different pros and cons for different breeds, so make sure you discuss these with your vet before making a shooting to more than 16,000 people More than 5,000 people tried shooting sports for the first time using BASC’s state-of-the-art ST-2 shooting simulator, which was taken to 46 events in 2018, including game fairs, county shows, schools and charity shoots It is also available for private hire and corporate events such as weddings, conferences and AGMs A further 4,000 youngsters were introduced to sporting shooting at NORJAM 2018 – a week-long jamboree which brought together scouts and guides from around the world Twenty BASC-accredited coaches travelled to Norfolk for the event and gave clay shooting lessons to the youngsters over the course of six days Coaches gave 2,500 clay shooting lessons at events around the UK over the course of the year and 3,500 airgun lessons Almost 1,000 people attended official BASC courses In addition, regional teams introduced more than 1,000 people at various events Dr Peter Marshall, BASC’s head of training and education, said: “2018 was a great year for the training and education team, with members introducing and training more than 15,000 people through various programmes and courses For many this was the first time they had tried shooting sports Hopefully, it will be the first step on a long and enjoyable shooting journey All of this work has been done in an enjoyable, educational and professional manner by our coaches and trainers “A big thank you goes out to the volunteers, trainers and coaches who made this happen We look forward to introducing many more people this year.” BASC chairman, Peter Glenser QC, said: “Shooting sports are an excellent leveller They break down barriers and bring people together Shooting sports are something anyone can take part in and we are heartened to see so many new people trying it for themselves.” BLACKWATER WILDFOWLERS Essex 01245 283210 www blackwaterwildfowlers.org.uk FENLAND WILDFOWLERS www.fenlandwa.org.uk GEDNEY DROVE END Wildfowlers Cambridgeshire Tel: 01945
