reunite the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the duke and Duchess of Sussex enjoy catching up on Commonwealth day T he ‘fab four’ were reunited again last week as the royal family marked the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth with a special service at Westminster Abbey Bracing themselves against the windy conditions, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were the first couples to arrive at the event And putting the persistent rumours of a rift to bed once and for all, Meghan and Kate greeted each other warmly with a kiss on the cheek, while their husbands shook hands Meghan, who is believed to be eight months pregnant now, had made a quick change out of her Erdem outfit worn earlier that day at Canada House (see page 10) into a Victoria Beckham cream coat and £1,191 chain print midi dress, worn with a matching hat also Above: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex seemed at ease, with the duchesses happy create excitement in the Beckham household – the former pop star said it was a ‘huge honour’ when ‘beautiful, strong, wonderful’ Meghan wore one of her designs on Christmas Day A dark green clutch and heels added colour to her ensemble Holding hands as they approached the steps of the abbey, Meghan, 37, and Harry, 34, smiled with delight as they passed a dance display put on by the Tropical Flower Sega Dancers, a group of British Mauritians from London It’s the second year Meghan has attended the annual service and she did so this year in her new role as vice president of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust Lady-in-red Kate, also 37, was particularly eye-catching in her WWW.OK.CO.UK 5 Despite being heavily pregnant, Meghan looked happy and relaxed at her second official engagement of the day The Queen looked regal in purple (left) as she led the royals out of the service (above) exquisitely tailored militarystyle Catherine Walker coat She first wore it on arrival in the Commonwealth nation of New Zealand during her 2014 royal tour with William and a young Prince George in tow Her decision to wear it again for the service was seen as a mark of respect for the Commonwealth Like her sister-in-law, she added a contrast colour by way of her matching heels and clutch William thoughtfully coordinated with his wife by choosing a tie in a dark red tone Last week’s service marked only the second time Kate and Meghan have been seen in public together since Christmas Harry and Meghan joined HM the Queen, Prince Charles and Camilla, Prince William and Kate and other members of the royal family at Westminster Prince Charles arrived hot on his sons’ heels, with his wife the Duchess of Cornwall looking resplendent in purple velvet Last to arrive, looking suitably regal in purple, was HM the Queen, prompting Meghan and Kate to give perfectly executed deep curtsies The Above: Meghan shares a joke with Prince Charles Left: The Prince of Wales arrives from royal engagements in 2017 so she was accompanied by her son Prince Andrew Other guests among the 2,000-strong congregation included Prime Minister Theresa May, former TV presenter Baroness Floella Benjamin – now a Liberal Democrat peer – and the leader of the House of Commons, Andrea Leadsom There were also ambassadors, faith leaders and over 800 schoolchildren and young people The theme for this year’s service was A Connected Commonwealth, with the aim of the diverse family of 53 nations to work Harry and Meghan set up a new household T The duchess was given flowers upon leaving the abbey hey’ve shared a close relationship both privately and professionally since they were young boys, but it was revealed last week that Prince William and Prince Harry have made the decision to part ways by separating their households It has been announced that Her Majesty the Queen has given her seal of approval for a new household to be set up for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex The household, which will be based at Buckingham Palace, will see the brothers separating their staff into separate teams in a move that is seen as a reflection of their changing responsibilities It is thought to be the clearest sign yet that the royal households want to make a clear distinction between William, who will one day be King, and Harry, who is currently sixth in the line to the throne Nearly 40 years ago their father Prince Charles set up a separate household from his brother Prince Andrew It is likely the Sussex household will be put in place in the coming weeks, with a new team in place by the time Harry and Meghan move into their new Frogmore Cottage home in Windsor together in friendship to promote social, political and economic development Member countries, representing nearly 2.4 billion people, are also being urged to protect natural resources and the environment In a written message that featured in the order of service, the Queen praised the Commonwealth for the way it ‘offers hope, and inspires us to find ways of protecting our planet, and our people’ She also touched on the way in which people around the globe are drawn together via collective values ‘We are able to look to the future with greater confidence and optimism as a result of the links that we share, and thanks to the networks of co-operation and mutual support to which we contribute, and on which we draw,’ she said And referencing ‘times of great change’ the Queen, who is the head of state for some of the Commonwealth countries, hailed the goodwill of the group of nations as ‘very real’ The multicultural, multi-faith service conducted by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, took place amid a sea of bright flowers representing each of the 53 nations One of the performance highlights during the ceremony was from Grammy Award-winning group Clean Bandit who sang their number one hit Symphony, despite admitting to feeling ‘quite nervous’! Here, Sophie chats to us about cleaning misconceptions and how a baby will change things… INSTAGRAM, SHUTTERSTOCK How you think your cleaning will be affected by the arrival of your child? I have followers who say they have two or three kids and they still manage to find time to clean I’m quite surprised because I always thought it would be the opposite like: ‘I’ve got kids – don’t even bother cleaning.’ But they enjoy it and I’m going to have fun with it when mine arrives I’m going to have Above, right and far right: The spotless Hinch home Above centre: Some of her favourite ‘picks’ 96 organised boxes for the toys You never know how it’s going to happen or how it’s going to roll out It’s obviously all new Above: Sophie insists she doesn’t clean all to me, but I’ve got so many day! People think I’m at home What are your thoughts on spring cleaning? 24/7 cleaning No! I I don’t spring clean I just clean all the time a little Hinch half an hour If I had too many gadgets around the house every day I rarely over an doing things for me I’d be like: ‘Put that down.’ hour a day I like to my If there was a toilet that cleaned itself I’d be freshen-up Fridays and my like: ‘No!’ I genuinely enjoy cleaning It little checklists I just it as keeps my mind busy It’s the satisfaction I’ve and when I feel like it There’s achieved something at the end At the same a lot of regimented cleaning routines out there time, the technology is fun to try With this now and, don’t get me wrong, that works for Beko dishwasher you save on water, and you some people For me, I enjoy it more to go with can set it when you’re out I’m going to set the dishwasher so that when Jamie walks in the door the dishwasher is finished, so he can unload it I don’t have a dishwasher so I’m genuinely excited I’ll be honest, though – my husband enjoys washing up so I’m like: ‘You crack on.’ It will be good to have those few extra moments with my baby, and not having it all piled up in the sink would be nice You’ve got a new book coming out… Yes, and there will be a book tour My Hinchers are so loyal All the tickets have already sold out It will be nice to get out the house and meet everyone I can’t wait OK! COLUMN OUR COLUMNIST ON THE IMPORTANCE OF READING TO KIDS AND EMMA BUNTON’S ‘STRICTLY’ BABY! EMAIL ME AT EMILY.ANDREA@OK.CO.UK L ENDING PERIOD POVERTY Read, which is so up my street because I love reading with the kids It aims to encourage parents to read with their children under five, to help with language development Children’s language and communication starts to develop a long time before they start school, and encouraging these skills at home is so important I’ll sometimes read books with Theo and think, how does he actually know that word? The other day he pointed out a flamingo, and I was so impressed He is doing really well with his language and it is probably helped by the fact that we read every night at bedtime Millie has a book every day from school so we all sit and she reads it to me and Theo She is so sweet and loves reading to him [left]! It’s tempting to go for electronics a lot more these days but I think the old-fashioned ways are sometimes the best I also saw that Dr Meg Lemon, a dermatologist in Denver, has suggested that allowing your children to eat food they have dropped on the floor can help boost their natural defences by exposing the body to a range of germs I have to say I agree with her If we’re at home and the kids drop something, I sometimes let them pick it up Of course I wouldn’t in a public place or restaurant, or when they were babies I think we’ve become a bit too hygienic There’s a theory that being over-hygienic in childhood has led to increasing numbers of children with allergies as their immune systems overreact when they are exposed to certain things So I’ve always been quite relaxed within reason Some germs are good I also took the kids swimming last week I am trying to take them every couple of weeks, just to get them confident for when we go to Cyprus in the summer It’s going well! ast week it was announced that the government will fund free sanitary products in all English secondary schools and colleges from the next academic year I think it’s great news Sanitary products are so expensive and nobody should have to go without On a similar topic, actor Michael Sheen, who shares daughter Lily with his former partner Kate Beckinsale [right], has backed a campaign by Hey Girls UK called Pads4Dads It aims to encourage dads to be able to feel comfortable talking to their daughters about periods I think it’s good to have an open relationship with your dad, if you’re both comfortable with that, and normalise talking about your periods For teenage girls it can feel a bit scary and a bit lonely at the time There are also many single dads out there and it’s important that they feel comfortable being able to talk to their daughters about it Some dads might wince at the idea at first, which I totally understand, and no dad or daughter should feel pressure to discuss it if they’re not comfortable I think learning and talking about the topic gradually might help with that ‘STRICTLY’ BABY SPICE E mma Bunton [below right] revealed last week that five years after she was told by her doctor that her endometriosis could limit her chances of having children, she became pregnant while appearing on Strictly Come Dancing She said: ‘I have no idea whether it was doing all that exercise but I was so happy Strictly got me pregnant.’ Endometriosis can vary from mild to very severe In severe cases, it can cause scarring inside your pelvis, which is when it can affect your chances of conceiving In terms of fertility, maintaining a healthy weight, which exercise certainly helps with, can definitely be beneficial Being overweight or underweight can affect your chances of conceiving because of the way your weight influences your monthly cycle OK! BBC, FAME FLYNET, RICHARD PURVIS @RJPPHOTOGRAPHYUK P READING TO YOUR KIDS ete’s 25th anniversary tour [right] came to an end Last week, and I popped down after work to the last show in Brighton It was really good and lots of our friends and family came down His work is still ongoing but he has a bit of downtime now, so it’ll be really nice to have him home I read about a campaign from the Department of Education called Chat, Play, WWW.OK.CO.UK 97 THE TEST OF TIME WHY A CERVICAL SCREENING COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE T his week marks the tenth anniversary of Jade Goody’s death, and women are being urged to ensure that they are up to date with their smear test as, worryingly, attendance is now at a 20-year low When Jade died in 2009, her fame was such that her story encouraged more women across Some women are the UK to attend unaware what cervical screenings; the test is for a response that was dubbed the Jade Goody effect Around half a million extra cervical screening tests occurred in England between mid-2008 and mid-2009, the period during which Jade Goody was diagnosed and died At its peak in March 2009, attendance was 70 cted per cent higher than expected rsh was one of OK! columnist Kym Marsh eartbreaking those inspired by Jade’s heartbreaking he year I lost demise She says: ‘It was the e February Archie – Archie died in the ssed away and then Jade Goody passed e March A from cervical cancer in the few months later, I had myy first smear nd that’s test after losing my son and h prewhen I was diagnosed with rrific but I cancerous cells It was horrific had the cells removed.’ Adding that she ‘might not be here now’ if she hadn’tt w gone for her test, she now u’re urges other women: ‘If you’re due one soon, please get it booked.’ Women aged 25 to 49 are offered a screening every three years Those aged 50 to 64 are offered a screening every five years But although cervical cancer affects around 3,000 women every year, sadly attendance is now att its lowest since nineties, with one in four women in the UK choosing not to attend their appointments This month, Public Health England launched ical the first-ever national cervical ted at screening campaign targeted 98 women who are eligible for smear tests Here’s why taking a smear test could very well save your life… WHY ARE SMEAR TESTS SO IMPORTANT? In the UK two women die every day from cervical cancer A smear test can stop cancer before it develops How? By checking the health of your cervix and treating any cells that could potentially develop into cancer in the future Many women don’t enjoy having a smear test but it’s necessary, as Becky Vardy told her Instagram followers ‘I dread smear tests & I don’t even know why,’ she admitted The mum of four then revealed that she was wearing her ‘red jungle socks’ from I’m A Celebrity Get Me sc Out Of Here!! during her screening test ‘to remind me that if I can a Bushtucker Trial and eat a sheep’s anus, then I can sme test that could certainly brave a smear lifesav potentially be lifesaving.’ Mic Our Girll star Michelle Keegan was also praised for live blogging from her appointmen ‘It’s so important smear appointment sh told her and it’s so easy,’ she followers Advising women to ‘STOP excu making excuses, book, and go’, pointe out: she pointed smea test lasts ‘A smear minute the impact of minutes cervi cervical cancer lasts a lif life time!’ Becky Vardy (left) posted her cervical screening on social media (above) Jade Goody died in 2009, leaving two young sons Kym Marsh was inspired by Jade Goody to go for a smear Head of support services at Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, Rebecca Shoosmith tells OK!: ‘Having celebrities such as Michelle Keegan and Becky Vardy being so vocal about their smear test experience is fantastic ‘It raises awareness about the importance and normality of smear tests, and also helps to tackle stigma and misconceptions about what happens during them.’ WHAT DOES AN ‘ABNORMAL SMEAR’ MEAN? Each year, 220,000 women are told after smear tests that they have abnormal cells that require treatment This isn’t a cancer diagnosis The smear test simply allows these abnormalities to be detected at an early stage before they potentially develop into something more serious Rebecca tells OK!: ‘Smears are free health tests that identify abnormal cells in the cervix HEALTH BITES which could develop into cervical cancer if not treated or monitored They’re not a test for cancer but they can prevent it ever occurring.’ If the results of your smear are abnormal, you’ll be offered further screenings and support This happened to Made In Chelsea’s Binky Felstead, who then had a quick operation to remove the affected cells WHY ARE FEWER WOMEN GOING RIGHT NOW? ALL THE LATEST HEALTH NEWS MARK’S ON THE PISTE MIC’s Binky had abnormal cells removed from her cervix Rebecca thinks there are many reasons, including ‘fear, not understanding what the test is for or why it’s important, having a previous bad experience and finding it hard to get an appointment.’ Some women are afraid the test will be painful but while it can be slightly uncomfortable, the GP or nurse doing the test will always help you feel as relaxed as possible Rebecca adds: ‘There are also cultural factors which can stop women taking up their invite Recently, a third of young women have delayed or missed their smear test due to embarrassment Many are concerned about their body and the way they look.’ In reality, medical professionals will be fully focused on the job in hand, rather than what you look like and whether or not you’ve shaved or waxed WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF CERVICAL CANCER? Although smear tests provide the best protection against cervical cancer, being symptom-aware is crucial Rebecca explains what we need to look out for: ‘Warning signs for cervical cancer can include abnormal bleeding during or after sexual intercourse or between periods; post-menopausal bleeding; unusual vaginal discharge; discomfort or pain during sex and even lower back pain.’ She adds: ‘Don’t panic, know what’s normal for your body and know that these symptoms don’t necessarily mean you have cervical cancer – they could be related to a number of things.’ Despite this, she says that seeking help is still important: ‘If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them Visit your GP and have them checked out as soon as possible.’ OK! Michelle Keegan was also praised for sharing her experience of a smear test PUBLIC HEALTH ENGLAND’S NEW ‘CERVICAL SCREENING SAVES LIVES’ CAMPAIGN AIMS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE RISKS OF CERVICAL CANCER AND HIGHLIGHT THE PREVENTATIVE BENEFITS OF SCREENING IT ENCOURAGES WOMEN TO RESPOND TO THEIR SCREENING INVITATION LETTERS, AND IF THEY MISSED THEIR LAST TEST TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT WITH THEIR GP WITH THANKS TO WWW.JOSTRUST.ORG.UK WHO RUN A FREE, CONFIDENTIAL HELPLINE ON 0808 802 8000 FEATURE BY YASMINE GRIFFITHS, OK! Is it sweeter winning a show as a celebrity rather than as the professional? Skating pro Yeah, winning as the Alex and James person who’s being were ecstatic critiqued is even more sweet I had to push myself harder than I have before It was so tough, but we’ve got a WhatsApp group and this morning everyone was on it saying they want to it all over again Will you keep in touch with everyone? I wouldn’t say everyone, but a lot I’m very close to Wes, Brian [McFadden], Jane [Danson], Saira [Khan] and Ryan [Sidebottom] Did Gemma Collins deserve the bad press? I found her funny, and she was good for the show As unfortunate as it was when she fell over, it was TV gold and she knew that She was one of the first to say it There are rumours she’s going to America to her own reality series Do you think she’ll make it Stateside? So many people have tried to make it in America and haven’t done it, but Gemma is a massive character They might love her over there I hope she does succeed, but it’s never a guarantee Nothing in life is! How does it feel to have won the public over? You always get haters, but I was so overwhelmed by the support That’s partly why I loved it so much On Strictly I was always defending my celebrity partner, as I’m a protective person But when the Dancing On Ice judges were critiquing me, I took it on the chin Maybe I’m a little bit older and wiser I’m still quite outspoken when I need to be, though The former Strictly dancer is still close to many of his Dancing On Ice co-stars Did you prefer Jason Gardiner over Craig Revel Horwood as a judge? Both play their part on the shows They’re supposed to be the bad guys, but it’s all panto I never take it too seriously Generally what they say is true Did you give Wes any advice over his split from Megan Barton-Hanson? He’s wiser than his years, and I think he handled the whole thing very well, so I didn’t need to Also, it’s none of my business much I needed to at the beginning, but then I couldn’t stop I’m going to fatten up now What will you be treating yourself to? The first thing I did when I got home was order an Indian takeaway It looks like I’ll be having a shoulder operation with months of recovery – I’ll be sitting at home, stuffing my face Will we see you back on Strictly? I don’t think my body would take it I pushed myself to the limit on DOI If there’d been another week, I don’t think I’d have been able to it You have to know when to hang up your dance shoes Ola and I will still corporate events There’s a playful rivalry between you two – are you happy you won? Of course I am, but I would have been so happy for Wes too, because he’s such a nice guy What does Ola think of you losing two stone? She thinks I’m too skinny, so I’ve probably lost too Do you and Ola have plans to more together now? We have things in the pipeline She’s still judging Dancing With The Stars in Poland James and his wife Ola want to work together What else would you like to once you’ve recovered from your injuries?
