www.boatshow.co.nz News Industrial Fishing Depletes the Bay Of Empty The governance of our marine fisheries is under increasing scrutiny because maintaining highly productive ecosystems has given way to transactional advocacy targeting every possible fish that can be justified Local depletion and inter-tidal reefs stripped bare sees coastal communities and Kaitiaki [guardians] crying out for effective restraints Clearly the current system is not working, and this is affecting us all Depleted fisheries and degrading inshore environments have an impact on all fishers’ catch, the enjoyment we get from walking along a beach swirling with life, and the legacy we leave for our next generations In the Bay of Plenty, Kaitiaki have been striving for acknowledgement and protections of their special places and values associated with the marine life that surrounds Motiti Island After an arduous court process, the Regional Council is now obliged to develop controls that will impact on fishing on several reefs around Motiti Island While the legal process is incomplete, this does highlight the complexity of achieving any meaningful change to managing our inshore marine environment As a nation, we have enabled 50 years of industrial exploitation of our fisheries in search of export dollars The bulk harvesting methods used have had an enduring, damaging impact on the benthic [seabed] environment The once-thriving regional fishing towns have all but disappeared, replaced by the Quota Management System, and remote landlords renting quota to fishers working for a minor share of returns The Bay has become so depleted that it is commonly referred to now as the “Bay of Empty” This is a crying shame, given the productivity of the past Some of this history was presented during the Rena wreck proceedings, where experts talked about the steady decline of the local hapuku fishery They presented newspaper accounts documenting early gamefishing feats, and even earlier Maori trading of fish, and catch data Many of the hard decisions required to restore abundance have been avoided by successive ministers, yet when we look out our windows, the evidence is clear to see Trawling is still the dominant fishing method and masses of scallops continue to be dredged from the seabed If we are serious about addressing the impacts of 50 years of bottom contact fishing in the Bay of Plenty, we need to more than just give lip service to maintaining the very habitat that our fish depend upon to survive and LegaSea is a public outreach initiative of the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council The Council has an experienced fisheries management, science, policy and legal team On behalf of the Council LegaSea raises funds and provides publicfriendly information about a variety of processes that are important for the sustainable management of fisheries for future generations Call 0800 LEGASEA (534 273) Email us info@legasea.co.nz Subscribe at www.legasea co.nz Read definition 48 nm radar featuring bird fish tales Fish Tales With Mad Harry Psychiatrists, Cat Fishing and Whipper Snappers Well, a Happy New Year to all who managed to stay the distance, survive and emerge into 2019, unscathed or with as little damage as possible, so to speak I “What, tinned cat food” I enquired? “Oh no,” said NoAnchor John “Whiskas sachets” was his reply, and to add justification he announced that they were top-notch chicken and gravy, to which I think I replied something along the lines of, “Oh right,” remembering he was the psychiatrist and I was not actually paying for this session 90 | NZ Bay Fisher have a good feeling with regards to the coming year and like many fisher folk (regardless of the level of experience), I have a number of personal achievements that I wish to “tick off the list.” I want to achieve a number of small but as yet unconquered challenges that through either sheer laziness or lack of confidence, have managed to become smothered by my own excuses This year will be different, and due to an enormous amount of behind the scenes groundwork, research and driven insanity, there may well be a number of revolutionary tackle items appearing from a lesser-known Kiwi tackle manufacturer to add to next year’s Christmas list It’s not often that I turn down an opportunity to launch Betsy with good company; however, whilst making a recent local delivery of home brew cider to my friendly, local psychiatrist, I agreed to have a brief paddle at low tide For some strange reason, I added that if I was not at the small kayak ramp at six, it indicated that I was somewhat indisposed and wouldn’t be coming Equally strange is that I’m finding it difficult to get anyone to accept free repeat orders of my mouth-watering thirstquenching cider Now for reasons of anonymity, I will just refer to my psychiatrist friend and fellow fisherman as John who by yet another strange coincidence, happens to have the exact same name in real life! As I had not been able to meet the six o’clock rendezvous at the kayak ramp, I caught up with John the next morning and he informed me that the evening was a huge success — and he had gone home with a number of snapper and kahawai for the smoker Since it was low tide, John had dragged his kayak across the sand and mud the one hundred or so metres to the edge of the channel, and then paddled out the remaining four metres and tied his kayak to an unoccupied permanent mooring between the various shapes and styles of craft I think from henceforth he will be referred to as “No-Anchor John.” No-Anchor John enthusiastically informed me that he had to endure a barrage of constant bites from the moment he had tied himself to the buoy, and in approximately four metres of slowmoving outgoing tide, had very quickly run out of squid bait owing to the number of bites from small, slightly under-size snapper that frequent the harbour at this time of year “It was fantastic,” he said “I had a bite every cast and returned so many small healthy-looking snapper that were only just under-size” True to form, he then threw the curve-ball at me and informed me that he was using cat food as burley Now when someone informs me that they are using cat food as berley, which I have to say is a very rare experience, rightly or wrongly, I immediately get an impression in my head of a can opener and a couple of tins of Go-Kat or some other house hold brand “What, tinned cat food” I enquired? “Oh no,” said No-Anchor John “Whiskas sachets” was his reply, and to add justification he announced that they were top-notch chicken and gravy, to which I think I replied something along the lines of, “Oh right,” remembering he was the psychiatrist and I was not actually paying for this session He then suggested that we both go out that very evening and have a go at a land-based session from the channel edge with the added advantage of not having to drag the kayaks out and he would show me how to fish, employing the cat food berley method Oh yes, I almost forgot to mention the fact that he was also going to show me his new land-based fishing bucket which he had picked up from the local op-shop under ferocious competition from an “old granny” (his words, not mine) who wanted it to store her dried dog food in I am pleased to announce that I can at last tick off my list landbased fishing cat food berley style, yet another first — and the new year being so young! Andrew Randall, eat your heart out! Believe it or not, some people have suggested that I make this sort of stuff up, which can be a little distressing for me, but I have to say that this particular landbased session will not be my last I found standing in the shallow water with the odd noggin of cider, in good company, on a beautiful evening with the fragrant Odeur de la Whiskas (chicken and gravy) wafting by, really hit the spot More bites than a Doberman attack class, and I certainly believe I could no justice in the confines of this article to the results of the evening As for No-Anchor John’s new hard-fought landbased fishing bucket, I think a picture paints a thousand words, and I will let the readers be the judge The next day saw me carrying out the threat of uncovering the Moon & Sixpence and launching her from the boat ramp for the first time in eight months This was to be accompanied by a stunning sunrise, and a swim back to land in the warm water, leaving her out on the edge of the channel I was looking forward to an early start the following morning, acting as a fishing guide and instructor for my son and his girlfriend who were keen to catch harbour snapper After waiting for the slack tide to turn and refill the harbour, we anchored in four and a half metres and started to introduce chunks of the five kilos of squid on board while setting up the tackle I think we may have inadvertently set a new record with my son’s rod — something which I have only just realised This was the first time out with his new softbait rod, and it did seem strange cutting off the price tag and the plastic wrapping around the cork handle on the boat and then witnessing a personal best snapper five minutes later It was one of those rare trips that I never got a look in, and didn’t have time to fish, as the action kicked off immediately The old small, round bullet weight with a 6/0 Octopus hook loaded with as much squid as possible was the perfect tactic The hook was fed out approximately 15 metres from the boat while holding the bullet weight in the hand and then just dropping it down the line leaving the squid baited hook to slowly sink in the flow The bites where totally aggressive and unmissable, with most fish going a minimum of thirty-five to forty centimetres and in fine fighting condition We probably had a full hour and a half of nonstop action before returning home for breakfast with reports of aching arms and total disbelief at the session we had just experienced It’s not often I am happy to take a back seat and act as bait boy and the chief net wetter, but this was just a pure pleasure to see two relatively-inexperienced anglers revelling in the best of harbour fishing for snapper Not to mention the two stingrays and a delightful hammerhead shark with a bit of an attitude A day that will be remembered by all for a long time Now back to the cider breakfast, I think Happy New Year, oh, is it March already? www.bayfisher.co.nz | 91 Email your photo with your name and a sentence about your catch and be in to WIN Bradd Bott cher with a d e ce n t size kahaw ai, caught fr o ma double kay ak in the Ba y of Islands with a juicy pilch ard bait Last month’s WINNER WIN A Jarvis Walker Boat Set: Generation 6’6” Rod and Generation 600 W/L Reel PLUS Jarvis Walker Boat Tackle Pack Fishing Multi Scarf & Cap ht this 13 lb age 11, caug , ts u o H n a for her Brooke v ersonal best p a s a w h ic snapper, wh 92 | NZ Bay Fisher Bradd Jack van Hou ts, age 9, is a keen fisherman like hi father This is on s e of the many sn ap per he caught on a family fishing tr ip ith the kingi he ca Josh Telford w a jig Penguin Shoals on ally he od size trev o g a h it w eir boat e Raat, family on th Mason d is h h it w g rod in e fishin lways has a a d caught whil n a g in n loves fish Riba Maso ! en on board his hand wh ught at the 5.Flynn Ma cdonald, ag e 5, with his which was c 34 cm snap aught at Ma per ta kawau Poin M a n u ka u H t on the arbour ENTER: Congratulations WINEmail a Rovex Boat Set to Owen Read, your photo with your name and a Emailsentence your photo withyour yourcatch nameand andbe a in to WIN about Winner from last month, sentence about your catch and be in to WIN Email: nzbayfisher@inkiq.co.nz Owen takes away the Kilwell Email: nzbayfisher@inkiq.co.nz These photos may be used in future by New Zealand Bay Fisher and alsoprize by Jarvis Walker Zealand for print and/or digital promotion pack GreatNew fish!
