language also reaches into the domain of human interaction The practice of translation dates back some two thousand years and ever since has existed until present days It is generally believed that translation plays a key role in the universalization of human knowledge It helps improve international understanding, socio-cultural awareness, professional communicative activities, implementation of technologies, and so much more Many well-known translators have been bringing for their great contribution to the mankind Translation is of undeniable significance to the development of the world culture and society However, the practice of translation has long been criticized for being More than often, unsatisfactory or even incorrection Certainly, almost no translation is perfect even when the general text is conveyed This is due to many linguistic and cultural differences between this language and that Perfecting the practice of translation has been a great desire of generations of translators all over the world In Vietnam, there has been a growing concern about the quality of English – Vietnamese translations Some have been called by prestigious translators as “disaster of the translation art” Indeed, the practice of translation is not only a craft, but also a science and an art, which needs to be constantly improved with a view to bringing the Vietnamese mass culture to a new height Particularly, English is the language of billions of documents available in all fields, academic or popular Therefore, it is hardly surprising that many scholars and lecturers teaching translation at universities have spared no efforts to work on the frequently seen types of mistakes in English – Vietnamese translation; translators may employ to avoid them They devote their life to find out and resolve common pitfalls that make a translation unnatural and sometimes even incomprehensible That is also the attempt that I choose this topic; try my best to accomplish this paper with the hope that it will give a translation overview especially translation newspaper from English into Vietnamese for the translators, students to help them translating better Therefore, the author decides to carry out a report on The advantages of translation in VUFO Hopefully, the report would bring concrete benefits to translators/interpreters, researchers, engineers, teachers, students and so on II Report Objectives The study is ultimately aimed at: • Defining translation and functions of translation and showing the status of translation in VUFO • Showing common translation methods that can be applied in VUFO • Giving some suggestions for translation The targeted subject of the paper is that all people who are interested in translation work can consider it as useful reference helping improve their translation skills The report involves fulfilling the following tasks: To produce the advantages that VUFO support, bring a good environment for translators III Scope of the report Due to time limitation, my paper cannot cover all aspects of translation Therefore, I only pay attention to give some advantages of translation in VUFO In this environment, what advantages bring for translators, they how to work effectively There are innumerable English and Vietnamese terms in many materials for translation The study will indicate some main advantages in translation that support to the translators work in VUFO IV Method of the report The research is going to use methods during research process: Theoretical research method: studying the related documents: getting the relate information from different resources, and then analyzing them to get the necessary conclusion Observation method: getting the reliable information about the real situation of research site then the researchers find out suitable solutions Personal interviews method: raising the question to ask local people for information about local culture Analysis method: from data got from the field study and field notes, analyzing to get the final results Synthesize method: synthesizing what have done and analyzed to go to the final conclusions V Significance of the report English-Vietnamese term translation of newspaper is one of the most complicated issues in translation field It is, therefore, essential for translators to have very good knowledge to perfect their work of translation After the report, it is hoped that the result will be helpful to provide: Input for translators or people whose work related to translation to minimize the advantages in translation? Input for translators or people whose work related to translation with the methods to translate terms in the materials for translation? This report is also being finical to anyone who is interested in translation VI Design of report My paper is divided into three main parts: Part A: Introduction, include Rationale, Objectives, Scope, Method, Significance and Design of study Part B: Content of the report, there are two main chapters in this part Chapter I: Literature review Chapter II: The advantages of translation in VUFO Pat C: Conclusion Part B: Development Chapter I: LITERATURE REVIEW In this chapter, I will focus on main parts In the first part, I introduce The Vietnam union friendship of organization And then next part, I show the definition of translation, the functions of translation The third part, I will produce overall the translation in VUFO I.1 Overview of translation I.1.1 Definitions of translation English-Vietnamese translation of terms in technical documents is one in which many translators have difficulty in mastering It has been dealt with by many authors NewMark (1988), and so on Generally, they focus on strategies for translating technical documentation Some of them analyse in details the meaning of words in Technical Translation He showed translation is the supper ordinate term for converting the meaning of any utterance ò any source language to the target language According to Wikipedia, translation is defined that “Translation is the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text Whereas interpreting undoubtedly antedates writing, translation began only after the appearance of written literature; there exist partial translations of the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh (ca 2000 BCE) into Southwest Asian languages of the second millennium BCE.” Moreover, Longman dictionary of contemporary English (5 ed.), translation is “when you translate something, or something that has been translated” Beside, Larson said that “Translation is a two-step process by which meaning expressed in the form of one language is re-expressed in the form of another” Moreover, Catford (1965: 20) states that translation may be defined as the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL) Similar definition is also mentioned by Larson (1984: 3) He says that translation consists of translating the meaning of the source language into the receptor language This is done by going from the form of the first language to the form of a second language by way of semantic structure It is meaning which is being transferred and must be held constant Only the form changes Wilss said that “Translation is a procedure which leads from a written SL text to an optimally equivalent TL text, and which requires the syntactic, semantic, stylistic, and text pragmatic comprehension by the translator of the original text.” Often it is rendering meaning of signs, symbols (both verbal and non-verbal) by means of other signs, symbols in the same language or in other languages Common sense tells us that this ought to be simple, as one ought to be able to say something as well in one language as in another On the other hand, it may be seen as complicated, artificial and fraudulent, since by using another language, the language user may be pretending to be someone he/she is not Hence, working in translation has its own interests and its own excitement Since a translator works on a text, he/she is always trying to extent his/her knowledge and improve his/her means of expression, he/she is always pursuing facts and words, so a satisfactory translation is always possible, but a perfect or ideal translated version may never be obtained To sum up, any authors brings students deep understandings about certain sides of technical translation By reading carefully, translators can get a complete theory in this phenomenon In fact, most of them pay attention to common ways to have a good translation I.1.2 Functions of translation Translation functions as a means of communication and information transferring It is used for multilingual notices in public places, for instructions issued by companies, for technical staffs where it is too often produced from the native into the foreign language by natives as a matter of nation pride, for official documents such as treaties and contracts, for reports, papers, articles, correspondence, textbooks or for technical documents of for advertisement, bidding folio, studying specific materials, etc to convey information, advice and recommendations for every branch of knowledge Its volume has increased with the rise of new technology, the increase in the number of new inventions in science and the growth of the terminology In the field of paint, sometimes we read a technical document, it is really a meaningful word for the daily conversation but it cannot be applied for the technical matter For example the word “Heavy duty”, may be understood “Nhiệm vụ nặng nề”, but in all paint documents, we must understand like “Industrial paint” And this well-known example is repeatedly reminded by all translators as a valuable experience of profession, especially when translating such “semi-technical” terms Translation is greatly demanded for the need of common understanding among companies and technicians Millions of books and texts translated everyday help to transfer ideas, notions, customs, and beliefs in the paint field to the others These are absorbed and considered in various directions and lead to the common agreement at different levels, either fully or partly accepted I.2 Introduction to The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations I.2.1 Foundation and development The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations-VUFO is a political organization-responsible areas, communication Besides, they always concern also take care their staff in working but also the life He often creates chances for his staff to work and develop, improve English skills Also, they can hold a party in official or department to make their relation become closer and closer 12 Chapter III: SUGGESTING SOME STRATEGIES OF TRANSLATION IN VUFO III.1 Some suggestions for translator in the Union The first thing I tell people who want to know how to become a translator is to get some sort of accreditation or certification Having credentials provides documentation that you have the skills required to translate or interpret professionally Many universities offer advanced degrees and professional certifications in translation The American Translator’s Association offers certification programs for translators Finally, check to see if your state offers accreditation programs for translators / interpreters Being certified through one of these organizations is also helpful because you will be listed on their website directories, where potential clients requiring your services can find you Overall, certification may not be required to be a successful translator or interpreter, but if you’re starting out in this industry, it is the best place to start Another resume builder is to take language proficiency tests such as the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) or other language proficiency tests to show potential clients that you are indeed fluent in your specific language The next step is to gain experience All of us have had to start out doing internships or working entry-level jobs in order to climb the ladder, and the language industry is no exception If you’re enrolled at or live near a college, take classes in translation / interpreting and look for opportunities to perform translation or interpreting work on campus for various departments It is crucial to get experience where you can show samples of your work to potential clients and get recommendations 13 After getting credentials and some experience, it’s time to market yourself to law firms, police stations, hospitals, government agencies, and language agencies that may need translators in your area A great way to market your services is to start a website or blog and join the active community of online language professionals Also, make sure you have your resume and rates ready! The best indicator that an aspiring translator is not a professional is when they have no idea what their rates should be Obviously, there are many ways to translate a text It is depend on the text we have a specific method  Word for word translation Features: SL word - order is preserved Non - grammatical Words are translated by their most common meanings, out of context Used for: Information about SL Language learning Pre - translation process of difficult text in order to gain sense of meaning  Literal translation: Features: SL grammatical structures are converted to their nearest equivalent in the TL Words are still translated singly, out of context Used for: Pre - translation process to identify problems Basic of poetry “translation” for poet who does not understand SL  Faithful translation Features: 14 Words are translated in context but unpromising to TL Transfer cultural words Does not naturalize Often read like a translation Used for: Literary translation ` Authoritative text Drafts  Semantic translation Features: It is more flexible than faithful translation Naturalizes a bit while faithful translation is uncompromising Great focus on aesthetic features of source text Close rendering of metaphor, collocations, technical terms, slang, colloquialism, unusual syntactic structures and collocations, peculiarly used words, neologism, badly written or inaccurate message Used for: Text that having high status: religious text, legal text, and politicians’ speeches Expressive texts  Communicative translation Features: Freer than semantic translation Gives priority to the effectiveness of the message to be communicated Focus on factors such as readability and naturalness Both content and the language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the reader Used for: Informative texts  Idiomatic translation 15 Features: Reproduce the “message” of the original Prefer colloquialism and idioms which not exist in the original Outcome: lively, “natural” translation  Free translation Features: Reproduce the matter without the manner; the content without the form of the original Paraphrases much larger than the original Used for: Informative translation In - house publication As you progress as a translator, there are other areas to consider as well However, I see that the most effective method is practice It is said that “Practice make prefect” If you have had success as a translator, maybe you could consider diversifying and becoming a certified court 16 PART C: CONCLUSION The role of language is to interpret the world for us The word symbols and grammar of a language organize the world for us Language is not only a tool for communicating and expressing human thought, but also a place restoring culture, customs of each community Since its beginning, translation has not ceased to play its indispensable role of transferring message across languages and cultural barriers Although the practice of translation is honored for its noble task, huge efforts are needed to improve the quality of translations Thus, the study on translation as the transformation of a written text in one language to that in another language has been carried out long before the formation of this paper and undoubtedly will be continued even after What I attempt to in this paper is to contribute my humble report to that great research work by giving suggestions in English - Vietnamese translation, which is very close to my everyday learning and work This is to show translators, especially would be translation professionals, the potential traps they may get caught in when rendering English texts into Vietnamese in terms of linguistic and culture In the chapter I, the writer gives some definitions and function of translation In the chapter II, the writer show information about VUFO and then gives some definitions In the chapter, the writer provides some suggested strategies for translators In this time to come, Vietnam will further integrate into the world economy and culture This progress requires translations of high quality especially from English into Vietnamese Thus, more studies should be carried out to identify and how to cope with common mistakes in these translations Besides, studies on what can be called pure Vietnamese language and how to maintain it through the process of translation should be implemented These studies are supposed to bring readers an overview of the contemporary situation of Vietnamese translated works, its strength and limitations, and how to improve it 17 Hopefully, readers of this paper can find it useful in their future work or at least see it as a reference worth looking at Due to time limitation and my limited knowledge the paper has unavoidable mistakes and shortcomings Hence, I would be grateful to receive all comments suggestion, and criticisms from teachers and friends to make the paper better 18 REFERENCES Newmark, P (1988) A Textbook of Translation London: Prentice Hall International J C Catford (1965) A Linguistic Theory of Translation An Essay in Applied Linguistics, London: Oxford University Press Larson, M.L (1984) Meaning-Based Translation: A Guide to Cross-Language Equivalence Lanham Md: University Press of America Wolfram Wilss (1982) The science of Translation: Problems and Methods Tubingen, Narr Retrieve from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Translation Retrieve from: http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/translation Retrieve from: http://www.altalang.com/beyond-words/2008/05/09/5-steps-to- becoming-a-translator/ 19 APPENDIX Interview questions The interview questions for translators in VUFO Question 1: How long did you work in VUFO?
