Ông giết được nhiều con, đuổi được chúng đi, nhưng cuối cùng khi nhìn đến con cá kiếm của mình thì nó đã bị rỉa hết thịt chỉ còn trơ lại một bộ xương khổng lồ. Truyện vừa Ông già và biển cả (in năm 1952 trong tạp chí Life) mang lại thành công lớn trong giới phê bình và công chúng rộng rãi, kể về cuộc đấu tranh của con người với thiên nhiên như một tất yếu của sinh tồn. Năm 1953 nhà văn được trao giải Pulitzer cho tác phẩm này. Năm 1954 ông nhận giải Nobel Văn chương do sự đánh giá đặc biệt cao đối với tác phẩm Ông già và biển cả và ảnh hưởng quan trọng của nhà văn đối với văn học hiện đại. Summary of the book’s content : The story is about the struggle between man and nature for survival. The main character is an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago, an unlucky fisherman. After 80 days not catching a fish, the old man venture far out into the Gulf to fish and a giant marlin takes his bait. But because the fish is too great, he must struggle 3 days and three nights with the fish, and finally he is able to catch it.
