Also, I want to go cycling a lot, so is it easy and convenient for me to hire a bicycle and take short cycling tours around your city? Just one other thing – what will the weather be like when I get there? (Just so I’ll know what clothes to pack!) … Write a letter responding to him/ her You should write at least 120 words You are not allowed to include your name your response will be evaluated in terms of Task Fulfillment, Organization, Vocabulary and Grammar 10 Therefore, I believe that although a main aim of university education is to get the best job, there are clearly further benefits If we continue to promote and encourage university attendance, it will lead to a better future for individuals and society Exercise 1: Computers are being used more and more in education Some people say that learning online is the best way to learn, whereas some claim that it is still better to attend a class with a teacher Discuss both sides of this argument and then give your own opinion 23 24 25 OPINION ESSAY An essay sample: Space exploration is much too expensive and the money should be spent on more important things To what extent you agree or disagree with this opinion? There is an argument that exploring space is a waste of money and that there are more Urgent needs to be addressed on earth, such as reducing poverty and preventing environmental destruction However, I am of opposing view to this opinion for the following reasons First of all, many of the technologies we take for granted today were originated thanks to space research Take satellite technology, for example, which we depend on for broadcasting and weather forecasting Without satellites, we would not be able to follow global events as they happen, nor give populations any warning of approaching storms Space research has also led to the development of new lightweight materials that offer us heat protection and enable food preservation Therefore, the challenge of sending human beings into space has often driven the development of new technologies that benefit our everyday lives Second, we cannot foresee the distant future, so we ought to develop the capability to escape from the earth Gragually, we are learning how humans can survive for long oeriods in space and even travel to other planets in the future If space exploration is balted, this valuable knowledge will never be acquired It is true that environmental destruction is also a serious issue, but it is also true that we remain dependent on our environment of we never accept the challenge of exploring other worlds In conclosion, while we undoubtedly face serious problems on our own planer, it is imperative that we continue to explore space This will promote further technological advances as well as provide a passible means of escape should earth become uninhabitable in future Ideally, all nations should cooperate In the advancement of space research 26 EXERCISE Computers are being used more and more in education and some people belive there will soon be no role for the teacher in education To what extent you agree or disagree? 27 28 PROBLEM – SOLUTIONS ESSAY An essay sample: The interner has transformed the way information is shared and consumed, but it has also created problems that did not exist before What are the most serious problems associated with the internet and what solutions can you suggest? The enormous growth in the use of the internet over the last decade has led to radical changes to the way that people consume and share information Although serious problems have arisen as a result of this, there are solutions One of the first problems of the internet is the ease with which children can access potentially dangerous sites Unless these websites are finely filtered by parents, there is no doubt that this affects their thoughts and development, which is a negative impact for the children and for society For example, pornigraphy sites are easily accessible to them because they can register with a site and claim to be an adult Another major problem is the growth of online fraud and hacking These days, there are constant news stories about government and company websites that have been hacked, resulting in sensitive information falling into the hands of criminals It is important that action is taken to combat these problems Government should ensure that adequate legislation and controls are in place that will prevent young people from accessing dangerous sites, such as requiring more than simply comfirming that you are an adult to view a site Parents also have a part to play They need to closely monitor the activities of their children and restrict their access to certain sites, which can now be done through various computer programs Companies must also improve their onsite IT security systems to make fraud and hacking much more difficult by undertaking thorough reviews of their current systems for weaknesses In conclusion, The internet is an amazing technological innivation that has transformed people’s lives, but not without negative impacts However, with the 29 right action bt individuals, governments and businesses, it can be made a safe place for everyone Exercise 3: Explain some of the ways in which humans are damaging the environment What can governments to address these problems? What can individual people do? 30 31 PRACTICE Exercise 1: In many Western countries there is an increasing number of couples choosing to have no children What are the advantages and disadvantages to couples having no children? 32 33 Exercise 2: Some people think that all teenagers should be required to unpaid work in their free time to help the local community They believe this would benefit bith the individual teenager and socierty as a whole Do you agree or disagree? 34 35 Exercise 3: The use of illegal drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, are becoming more and more common in many coutries What are some of the problems associated with drug abuse, and what are some of the possible solutions? 36 37 ...
