Trọng âm của một từ chính là chìa khóa diệu kỳ để hiểu và giao tiếp thành công tiếng Anh. Người bản ngữ sử dụng trọng âm rất tự nhiên, trong khi đó người học rất lúng túng, khó khăn khi giao tiếp một phần do chưa biết cách sử dụng trọng âm đúng cách. Không phải ngôn ngữ nào cũng có trọng âm ví dụ: tiếng Nhật, tiếng Pháp hay tiếng Việt. Đối với tiếng Anh, trọng âm của từ không phải là lựa chọn ngẫu nhiên. Điều đó có nghĩa là bạn không thể nhấn trọng âm vào chỗ nào bạn thích hoặc không thích. Người bản xứ sử dụng trọng âm của từ để giao tiếp một cách thuần nhuyễn và chính xác thậm chí cả trong tình huống hội thoại khó. Ví dụ bạn không nghe rõ một từ nào đó nhưng bạn vẫn có thể hiểu được là nhờ trọng âm của từ.
