Unit 12: Music Part A: Reading

I Objectives:

1 Aims:

By the end of the lession, Ss will be able to:

- use vocabulary items related to music

- guess the meaning of words based on contexts

- scan for specific information about music.

2 Knowledege:

- General knowledge: Knowledge about music

- Language: + The present simple tense

+ Vocabulary concerning music: rock 'n 'roll, mournful, solemn

3.Skills: speaking, reading

II Methods: Integrated, communicative approach

III Teaching aids: Textbook, handouts, board.

2 Warm up

- Play the tape with 5 pieces of music and ask sts to guess what types of music they are

- Get feedback and check.

Step 1: Pre-reading Matching

- T ask Ss to read aloud the types of music in columnnn A

to make sure that they pronuonce them correctly

- Ss give the Vietnamese equipvalents of the types of music

- T ask Ss to work in pairs to match each types of music in

- T asks some Ss to give the answers

- T gives feedback and the correct answers:

Pre-teaching vocabulary

Note: T should only teach the words which do not appear

in Task 1

- T elitcits or teaches some vocabulary items:

1 Express (v): state thoughts or feeling in words, show meaning by gesture , behaviour,…(biểu lộ, thể hiện)

2 Convey (v): express sth (biểu lộ, thể hiện)

3 Funeral (n): ceremony for someone who has died(đám ma)

4 Solemn (adj): humorless, formal (trang trọng, trang nghiêm)

5 Sense (n): physical faculty (giác quan)

- T may ask some Ss to make sentences with the above words to check their understanding

Step 2: While- reading

Task 1: Gap filling based on word meaning guessing

Instruction: Fill each blank with one of the words in the

box All of the words appear in the reading passage

-T writes these words on the board:

Emtion, lull, communicate, delight, intergral part, mourful,

solemn.

Continue with the rest of the sentences

-T ask Ss too work individually to do the task

- T ask Ss to exchange their answers eith other Ss

- T ask Ss for their answers and tells them to explain their choises

- T gives the correct answers:

1 communicate 5 solemn

3 delight 7 mournful

Task 2: Answering questions

Instruction: You are to read the passage again and answer

the questions in the book.

– T instructs Ss to use some strategies to do the task:

First, skim the five questions to understand them As Ss do

this they:

+ underline the key words For instance, in question 1 Ss

can underline what, two things, human, different, animals.

+decide what information they need to find in the text

look for questions words like “why” which indicates Ss should read for specific thing like a reason

+Continue with the rest of the questions

- Ask Ss to work individually to do the task

- Ask Ss to discuss their answers with their peers

- Call on some Ss to write their answers on the board and ask them to explain their choises.

- Give the correct answers:

1.Language and music (line 2) 2.It can express ideas, thoughts and feelings (lines 3-6)

3.It adds joyfulness to the atmosphere of a festival

and makes afuneral more solemn and mourful (lines 9-11)

Stepp 3: Post-reading

Instruction: You are required to work in groups to discuss

the question in the textbook.

- T ask Ss to work in groups of 5 to discuss the two questions in the book

- T goes around to help the groups when necessary

- When all groups have finished, T asks every two groups to share ideas with each other

- T calls on some groups to report their ideas to the class

- T gives feedback

- T summarises the main points

- T asks Ss to learn by heart all of the new words and

do the extra exercise as homework
