Trang 3Reasons why Vietnamese English teacher choose the GTM
as dominant method
1 They like to be the authority in class , all the activities in classroom are under teacher’s control so they can conduct the lesson smoothly without troubles form students
Trang 42 Using the GTM means that the teachers can use mother tongue in teaching so they don’t need prepare well for
their lesson
It also doesn’t require special skills as other methods
Trang 5Classes with big size , without modern equipment even the lack of facility Mixed levels of the students
Trang 6To pass two important entrance exams
- High school entrance exam (for grade 9 )
- University entrance exam ( for grade 12 )
Teachers and students have to spend a lot of time on grammar, vocabulary , reading and writing so the GTM is best methods for teachers
Trang 7Teachers in Vietnam always have big pressure from the school administration , from society community , from student’s parents
Teachers are considered low qualified and will be sack If too many students in class get low mark or fail the exams Therefore, the GTM is safe way to help students to get high marks on the test and please the school administrators and student’s parents
Trang 8The advantages of
the Grammar-Translation Method
Trang 9Few demands on teachers
• Because almost all the teaching and occurs in their L1, rarely communicate in their L2.
• Teachers who are not fluent in English can teach English using this approach, as the emphasis is not on the spoken word but on translations.
• Communication between student and teacher is reduced with this method
Trang 10Less stressful for students
• Students will not have much difficulty in responding to questions in the mother tongue
• The students easy to understand grammatical lessons
Trang 11Develops students’ reading and writing skills
• In the GTM, comparison between two languages helps ss to have a better understanding of the meaning of words and
complicated sentences
• Focus on Grammar, Sentence Structure and Word Meanings
This is especially helpful in teaching students how to write and read in another language, allowing them to explore
interchangeable words and phrases (i.e., different words for different tenses) more effectively than a verbal teaching method
Trang 12Disadvantages of GTM
• The grammar translation method puts too much emphasis on reading and writing and no attention on speaking and listening
• communicating in the target language is not stressed So, students fail to get proficiency in using the target language to communicate
Trang 13• Words are taught through bilingual word lists, dictionary study and memorization.
• Memorizing grammar rules and bilingual words lists doesn’t motivate students to actively communicate
in the target language and make students bored
Knowing a large number of grammatical rules and much vocabulary can not ensure that students can use them appropriately in real situation
Trang 14• In this method, first thinking the idea in mother tongue and then translating them into the target language.and encourage word for word translation so, there is no creative.
• Classes are taught in the mother tongue with little activity using the target language
Trang 15• There is little interaction from student to teacher and student to student Therefore, the atmosphere in the classroom is usually very quiet Students are impassive
Trang 16• Teacher are very strict to students’ errors in reading and writting Consequently, students will be stressed
and afraid of making errors
