REPORTED SPEECH C-ORDERS AND REQUESTS IN REPORTED SPEECH :

I.Look at these examples :

1-She said to Bill,”Please wait for me here ”

=>She asked Bill to wait for her there

2-He said:”Don’t touch anything in this room !”

=>He ordered us not to touch anything in that room

II.Remember to make these four changes :

1 +Change the introducing verb SAY to TELL (ASK,ORDER …) according to the meaning of the sentence

+Add an object to the verb TELL (ASK , ORDER…) in the reported speech +Omit the comma or colon ,quotation marks ,the verb PLEASE ,and

exclamation mark

2 * Change the verb in the direct speech from Affirmative imperative to

TO +INFINITIVE *Change the verb in the direct speech from Negative imperative to

NOT TO +INFINITIVE

3 Change the personal pronouns and possessive adjectives(the same as in STATEMENTS)

4 Change the words showing Place and Time (the same as in STATEMENTS )

*NOTE : A question with WILL or Would expressing a polite request

,invitation ,or offer may be reported in two ways :a)as a question or b)as a request

e.g :”Will you please be here at nine o’clock ?”

a)He asked me if I would please be there at nine o’clock

b)He asked me to be there at nine o’clock
