Read this before you pick up another self-improvement book or attend another seminar. This will be explained on the page with the pills... Meantime... if you are ready, read on. What hypnosis is not When a thing is new to you, it is sometimes easier to begin to understand it by filtering what it is not. Much like Donatello who started and Michelangelo who finished the statue of David, only by chipping away at the granite can the masterpiece be revealed. Hypnosis first and foremost, is not sleep, it is not unconsciousness, and it is not a surrendering of the will power and its control. Hypnosis is not illusion or voodoo. And you do not have to have your eyes closed or look like you are hypnotized to be hypnotized. Hypnosis is actually exhibited in everyday human behaviour! Because hypnosis is so much a usual human behaviour you actually never really notice it as peculiar as you live your daily life. You may not notice this but I bet that you definitely relate to the following phenomenon. Do you feel constantly afraid of falling and toppling over out of control? Probably not right? But do bear in mind that the earth is spinning at 1000 miles per hour. That is taking less than 1 single second to run around a football / soccer field! You don’t notice this because your mind is focused on other more meaningful events and activities. However, the advertising industry has long known the power of hypnosis and they harness it to embed commands into your head to buy their product over others. They have used it to get us to modify our minds and do things differently. You ever watched Levi Jeans advertisements? Sure you have... You see gorgeous looking supple bodied humans wearing nothing but that pair of deep dark blue jeans. They writhe © Perry Lai, www.PathlightCentre.com 3 around, jump around, and sometimes even walking out dripping wet from the sea onto the beach! The advertisements DON’T MAKE SENSE!!! Do they? But you are transfixed on the TV screen, absorbing every bit of information the advertisers are feeding you. And voila, you actually begin to think, “Hey... beautiful people wear LEVI jeans... I want to be beautiful... so......” Kachink! Think I am full of bull? Think about it then... when you go buy stuff, even groceries, why do you choose to buy that brand? Can you really use logic to explain? Oh yeah... and by the way, LEVI first came up with these jeans for manual workers working during the gold rush... back in the late 1800s. So go figure... So how does our mind really work? We look at 4 factors when discussing about the workings of the mind: 1. 2. 3. 4. Unconscious mind Subconscious mind Conscious mind Critical factor The three minds have a protective function that keeps us from harm and protects us from danger. Unconscious mind The unconscious mind is in charge of our bodily functions. The medical field calls it the autonomic nervous system. When you are first born, your unconscious mind is already at work. Thus the rooting reflex, startle reflex, etc... When you touch a hot stove, your hand automatically withdraws without you consciously telling it to. This area of the mind has a very high resistance to change and programming, but a Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov proved once and for all that it too can be programmed. What he did was to ring a bell every time it was time to feed his dog. He did this over a prolonged period of time and one day, he experimented just ringing the bell without offering the dog any food. Invariably, the dog started drooling. © Perry Lai, www.PathlightCentre.com 4 Subconscious Mind Here is the storage of all your experiences and feelings. Your beliefs, values and habits are etched in this area of the mind. This database stores all the events that ever happened to you and more importantly, stores the meaning of the events. In hypnotherapy, we primarily work on this area of the mind. Your subconscious mind loves to keep the status quo. It does not want to change because change takes effort. This part of the mind will not allow new information to integrate if it perceives that it takes more effort to replace the old programming. It is actually protecting you because it wants you to be comfortable in your life. Here is where seminars and books fail and why hypnotherapy should be your first stop in your success journey. In most self help literature, they require you to repeatedly perform an action or say certain things to yourself to produce change. Haven’t you met certain people who had pursued success for the past 2 decades of their lives? What happened? Most of the time... not much... The previously stored habits and beliefs actually become strengthen as you try to pound it with more new programming without success. Do you know why your doctor emphasises that you must finish your course of antibiotics? That is exactly why some people get to an even worse state of mind after pursuing success for a long time! If you do not finish the course of antibiotics, the disease actually got stronger with the resistance you gave it. It is now trained to resist the very thing you desire in your life! How scary is that? If only you knew about this earlier... you wouldn’t have wasted so much of your youth. © Perry Lai, www.PathlightCentre.com 5 In hypnosis you can install the new beliefs, habits and behaviour ensuring that it gets integrated into your subconscious mind. The great news is that the subconscious mind is unlimited in capacity and unless you have a medical condition or suffered a trauma to your brain, you can always program new things into your subconscious mind. Conscious mind Here is where your logic and analytical abilities reside. Unlike the subconscious mind, this area of the mind is limited. Another reason why you do not change is because the new programming is very often only directed to the conscious mind. It gets filtered and blocked before it can have a chance to enter into your subconscious mind. Critical Factor Somewhere between your conscious and subconscious mind lies your critical factor. This sucker is irritating. This is the guy that does not allow any new desired programming from entering your mind. It quickly compares its usefulness and deletes it even before you have a chance to experience it even for a while. How Do You Use Hypnosis to Reprogram Your Mind? When a person is awake, the brain waves operate around 21 cycles per second (hertz). As the brain waves move lower your minds become more ready to accept new habits, beliefs and behaviours you want to install into yourself. Note, however, that you are suggestible at any level. It is just that as the levels are lower, the easier to suggest. At a certain point the conscious and the subconscious become open to receive the same information without any filtering or distortions. This point is called "critical factor bypass" and lies between conscious and subconscious. The critical factor protects the mind's current beliefs of reality. © Perry Lai, www.PathlightCentre.com 6 New information or data that does not fit our current picture or beliefs we hold is criticized and distorted until it does fit our beliefs or it is just simply disregarded. As we reach critical factor bypass and focused attention is established, we move into the state of hypnosis. How might this happen in everyday life? There was one incident that got my wife cracking up on the bed, laughing... I came home after an eventful day and just threw everything down and headed to the shower. I felt the warm water cascading down my body and my hands rubbed on the areas that felt really tight and stressed. The stimulating jets of water massaged my face as I closed my eyes and relaxed. Then a thought struck me. “Hey wait a minute... had I washed my hair?” “Hmmm... it feels squeaky... but I can’t be sure if it is the shampoo or my grease...” “Oh crap... lemme just wash it again...” You find that ever happened to you? Where else might this happen? Had you ever watched TV... stood up... walked to the kitchen... and have absolutely no idea what you were there for? For that duration... you were hypnotised. Were you asleep? No. Were your eyes open? Yes However, in consciousness you were no longer aware of sitting on the couch, you sense no one around you - you are in an altered state, you are in "awaking hypnosis." You have moved into the trance state of hypnosis and as far as your body and consciousness are concerned you are there inside the movie. You do this all the time during the day. This even happens in sports, where you are performing at such sublime levels that you have no clue how you are doing it. You were in the zone. You had the flow. © Perry Lai, www.PathlightCentre.com 7 Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of “Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience,” describes flow as “being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.” Always, in all cases, the only person that can hypnotize you is you. You always hypnotize yourself. You can and do come out of your altered state when you want to and you go into it when you want to. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Just as you are in hypnosis as you are engrossed in a TV show, you have absolute power to get up and walk away from the TV; you can at anytime decide to come out of hypnosis. You are always in control. The protective functions in your minds will NEVER allow you to do anything that violates your morality or put you in danger. Even if your religion forbids you from dancing, you will never be able to use hypnosis to start dancing if you truly have faith in your religion. So how does hypnotherapy go? First, there must be trust between both you and me. Secondly, you must feel absolutely comfortable to allow me to bring you to the hypnotic state to help you install and remove beliefs, habits or behaviour that you chose for yourself. The only thing that will prevent a normal intelligent person from going into hypnosis is fear. The fear may be anything from fear of disclosure, fear of hypnosis, or fear of losing a comfortable, though dysfunctional, relationship or lifestyle. When there is trust and comfort, the hypnotherapy session will invariably be a success. Hypnosis can enhance any therapy and is used in many medical and non-medical settings in a variety of ways to support healing and change. Can hypnosis be abused? Sure, just as fire can cook a meal, it can also cook a man. What is important is who is using the knowledge and tools to help people. If you choose to allow hypnotherapy to be an assistant to your success, look for certified professionals in good standing! © Perry Lai, www.PathlightCentre.com 8 The Pathlight Centre Special Offer How would you like to experience professional hypnosis yourself? American Hypnotherapist, Calvin Banyan, MA, a Board Certified Hypnotherapist, who has a Masters in Psychology, has spent years studying "talk-therapy," hypnotherapy, selfhypnosis, prayer and meditation. After extensive experience and a great deal of inspiration, he developed a well known form of hypnotherapy called 5-PATH® which is one of the fastest growing forms of hypnotherapy in the world. Mr. Banyan did not stop there. He thought that his highly respected and very successful 5-PATH® hypnotherapy system as just the beginning of a major system of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, that he felt needed a self-hypnosis component. This is when he began his own journey of discovery as each part of the 7th Path SelfHypnosis® was revealed. Each part of the process hypnotic suggestions called, “Recognitions” were first discovered and then used by his personal clients. The power of these Recognitions were astonishing and he was inspired to teach other hypnotherapists around the world, who have in turn taught thousands of people who have now used 7th Path Self-Hypnosis to change their lives for the better. © Perry Lai, www.PathlightCentre.com 11 [...]... of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, that he felt needed a self -hypnosis component This is when he began his own journey of discovery as each part of the 7th Path SelfHypnosis® was revealed Each part of the process hypnotic suggestions called, “Recognitions” were first discovered and then used by his personal clients The power of these Recognitions were astonishing and he was inspired to teach other hypnotherapists... studying "talk-therapy," hypnotherapy, selfhypnosis, prayer and meditation After extensive experience and a great deal of inspiration, he developed a well known form of hypnotherapy called 5-PATH® which is one of the fastest growing forms of hypnotherapy in the world Mr Banyan did not stop there He thought that his highly respected and very successful 5-PATH® hypnotherapy system as just the beginning.. .The 7th Path Self -Hypnosis is an exciting development in the field of Mind-Body-Spirit personal development It is changing lives all across the USA and around the world by combining the powers of self -hypnosis and your own highest belief systems Practitioners of this new self -hypnosis system will benefit in many ways because it is a holistic...
