Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following the questions.

In the world today, particularly in the two most industrialized areas, North America and Europe,

recycling is big news People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be sensitive to the environment Recycling means finding was to use products a second time The motto of the recycling

movement is "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"

The first step is to reduce garbage In stores, a shopper has to buy products in blister packs, boxes

and expensive plastic wrappings A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of packaging:usually paper, a box, and a bag All that packaging is wasted resources People should try to buy things thatare wrapped simply, and to reuse cups and utensils Another way to reduce waste is to buy high-qualityproducts When low quality appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy new ones - a loss

of more resources and more energy For example, if a customer buys a high-quality appliance that can beeasily repaired, the manufacturer receives an important message In the same way, if a customer chooses aproduct with less packaging, that customer sends an important message to the manufacturers To reducegarbage, the throwaway must stop

The second step is to reuse It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles After

customers, empty the bottles, they return them to the store The manufacturers of the drinks collect thebottles, wash them, and then fill them again The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved In

some parts of the world, returning bottles for money is a common practice In those places, the garbage

dumps have relatively little glass and plastic from throwaway bottles

The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle Spent motor oil can be cleaned and

used again Aluminum cans are expensive to make It takes the same amount of energy to make onealuminum can as it does to run a color TV set for three hours When people collect and recycle aluminum(for new cans), they help save one of the world's precious resources

Question 40: What is the main topic of the passage?

Question 42: People can do the following to reduce waste EXCEPT .

A buy high-quality product B buy simply-wrapped things

Question 43: Why is it a waste when customers buy low-quality products?

A Because people will soon throw them away

B Because they have to be repaired many times

C Because customers change their ideas all the time

D Because they produce less energy

Question 44: The word 'motto' is closest in meaning to _

Question 45: What best describes the process of reuse?

A The bottles are collected, washed, returned and filled again

B The bottles are filled again after being returned, collected and washed.

C The bottles are washed, retuned, filled again and collected

D The bottles are collected, returned filled again and washed

Question 46: The garbage dumps in some areas have relatively little glass and plastic because _.

C not many bottles are made of glass or plastic D each returned bottles is paid.

Question 47: The word 'practice' is closest in meaning to _

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following the questions.

You can usually tell when your friends are happy or angry by the looks on their faces or by their actions. This is useful because reading their emotional expressions helps you to know how to respond to them

Emotions have evolved to help us respond to important situations and to convey our intentions to others But

does raising the eyebrows and rounding the mouth say the same thing in Minneapolis as it does inMadagascar? Much research on emotional expressions has centered on such questions

According to Paul Ekman, the leading researcher in this area, people speak and understand substantiallythe same “facial language” Studies by Ekman’s group have demonstrated that humans share a set ofuniversal emotional expressions that testify to the common biological heritage of the human species Smiles, for example, signal happiness and frowns indicate sadness on the faces of people in such far- flung places asArgentina, Japan, Spain, Hungary, Poland , Sumatra ,the United States, Vietnam, the jungles of NewGuinea , and the Eskimo villages north of Artic Circle Ekman and his colleagues claim that peopleeverywhere can recognize at least seven basic emotions: sadness, fear, anger, disgust, contempt, happiness, and surprise There are, however, huge differences across cultures in both the context and intensity ofemotional displays – the so called display rules In many Asian cultures, for example, children are taught tocontrol emotional responses – especially negative ones- while many American children are encouraged toexpress their feelings more openly Regardless of culture, however, emotions usually show themselves, tosome degree , in people’s behavior From their first days of life, babies produce facial expressions thatcommunicate their feelings

The ability to read facial expressions develops early, too Very young children pay close attention to facialexpressions, and by age five, they nearly equal adults in their skill at reading emotions on people’s faces

This evidence all points to a biological underpinning for our abilities to express and interpret a basic set of

human emotions Moreover, as Charles Darwin pointed out over a century ago, some emotional expressionsseem to appear across species boundaries Cross - cultural psychologists tell us that certain emotionalresponses carry different meanings in different cultures For example, what emotion do you suppose might

be conveyed by sticking out your tongue? For Americans, this might indicate disgust, while in China it cansignify surprise Likewise, a grin on an American face may indicate joy, while on a Japanese face it may just

as easily mean embarrassment Clearly, culture influences emotional expressions

The ruined temples of Angkor

The ruined temples of Angkor are perhaps one of the most impressive Seven Wonders of the World.Located in modern day Cambodia near Lake Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Asia, Angkor was the

seat of power for the Khmer Empire from the ninth to the most impressive ones in the world, rivaling the

pyramids of Giza in Egypt Why this mighty civilization died out is a question that archeologists are nowonly beginning to ponder The answer, it turns out, may be linked with the availability of fresh water

One possible explanation for the downfall of the Khmer Empire has to do with the inhabitants’

irrigation system The temple and palaces of Angkor were constructed around a series of artificial reservoirs and canals which were annually flooded to capacity by the Mekong River Once filled, they were used to

irrigate the surrounding rice patties and farmland during the course of the year Farmers were completelydependent upon the water for their crucial rice crop Without consistent irrigation, the farmers would havebeen unable to maintain functional crop production

Scientists speculate that toward the end of the Khmer Empire the hydraulic systems of the reservoirsand canals broke down The construction of hundreds of sandstone temples and palaces required anenormous amount of physical labor In addition, as the capital of the Khmer Empire, Angkor containedupwards of one hundred thousand people who resided in and around Angkor In order to feed so manypeople, the local farmers were driven to grow food quicker amd more efficiently After centuries of continualuse, the irrigation system was pushed beyond its capacity Soil erosion, nutrient depletion, and the loss ofwater led to decrease in the food supply With less food available, the people of Angkor slowly began tomigrate to other parts of Cambodia thus leaving the marvellous city of Angkor to be swallowed by the

jungle Therefore, it is speculated that the Khmer Empire may have fallen victim to its own decrepit

infrastructures

All mammals feed their young Beluga whale mothers, for example, nurse their calves for some

twenty months, until they are about to give birth again and their young are able to find their own food Thebehavior of feeding of the young is built into the reproductive system It is a non-elective part of parentalcare and the defining feature of a mammal, the most important thing that mammals whether marsupials, platypuses, spiny anteaters, or placental mammals have in common

But not all animal parents, even those that tend their offspring to the point of hatching or birth, feed

their young Most egg-guarding fish do not, for the simple reason that their young are so much smaller thanthe parents and eat food that is also much smaller than the food eaten by adults In reptiles, the crocodilemother protects her young after they have hatched and takes them down to the water, where they will findfood, but she does not actually feed them Few insects feed their young after hatching, but some make other

arrangement, provisioning their cells and nests with caterpillars and spiders that they have paralyzed with

their venom and stored in a state of suspended animation so that their larvae might have a supply of freshfood when they hatch

For animals other than mammals, then, feeding is not intrinsic to parental care Animals add it to

their reproductive strategies to give them an edge in their lifelong quest for descendants The most

vulnerable moment in any animal's life is when it first finds itself completely on its own, when it must forage

and fend for itself Feeding postpones that moment until a young animal has grown to such a size that it is

better able to cope Young that are fed by their parents become nutritionally independent at a much greater

fraction of their full adult size And in the meantime those young are shielded against the vagaries of

fluctuating of difficult-to-find supplies Once a species does take the step of feeding its young, the youngbecome totally dependent on the extra effort If both parents are removed, the young generally do notsurvive

do this, he used what is known as "Wiki" software (from the Hawaiian word for "fast"), which allows users
