UNIT 6: GRADE 10 • A command is an imperative statement. One person orders another to do or not to do something. It can be preceded by please. The understood subject is you. • There are two kinds of Imperative: 1. Affirmative Imperative: Is used when one person orders another to do something. It usually begins with Bare- Infinitive. Ex: Open the door. Please turn off the light. Close the window. Be quiet. GRAMMAR: REPORTED SPEECH 2. Negative Imperative: 2. Negative Imperative: Is used when one person orders another not to do something. It usually begins with DON’T + VERB Bare Infinitive. Ex: Don’t close the door. Please don’t turn off the light. Don’t talk in class, please. Some reporting Verbs are often used to change an Imperative: TELL, ASK, ORDER, ADVISE, COMMAND, BEG, WARN… 1.Affirmative Imperative: Ex: a. The teacher said to us, “Stand up”.  The teacher told us to stand up. b. “Buy some fresh radishes, Mai”, Mrs. Thanh said.  Mrs. Thanh told Mai to buy some fresh radishes. How to change an Imperative into Indirect: Verb (bare)  Verb (To infinitive) Ex: a. He said to them, “Don’t shut the door”.  He ordered them not to shut the door. b. She said to me, “Please don’t tell anybody what happened”.  She asked me not to tell anybody what (had) happened. 2. He ordered them, “Don’t put your legs on my desk”. 14. Ann said to him, “Don’t wait for me if I am late”. 15. “Come and see us if you have time,” they said to us. 16. The customs officer said to us, “Have your passports ready, please”. 17. The librarian said, “Be quiet, children”. 18. “Don’t take my umbrella before you ask me”, Mrs. Lan said to her daughter. 19.
