into battle or lull us to sleep Music is indeed remarkable in its power over all humankind, and perhaps for that every reason, no human culture on earth has ever lived without it From discoveries made in France and Slovenia even Neanderthal man, as long as 53,000 years ago, had developed surprisingly sophisticated, sweet-‐sounding flutes carved from animal bones It is perhaps then, no accident that music should strike such a chord with the limbic system – an ancient part of our brain, evolutionarily speaking, and one that we share with much of the animal kingdom Some researchers even propose that music came into this world long before the human race ever did For 10 example, the fact that whale and human music have so much in common even though our evolutionary paths have not interested for nearly 60 million years suggests that music may predate humans They assert that rather than being the inventors of music, we are latecomers to the musical scene Humpback whale composers employ many of the same tricks that human 15 songwriters In addition to using similar rhythms, humpbacks keep musical phrases to a few seconds, creating themes out of several phrases before singing the next one Whale songs in general are no longer than symphony movements, perhaps because they have a similar attention span Even though they can sing over a range of seven octaves, the whales typically sing in key, spreading adjacent notes no 20 farther apart than a scale They mix percussive and pure tones in pretty much the same ratios as human composers – and follow their ABA form, in which a theme is presented, elaborated on and then revisited in a slightly modified form Perhaps most amazing, humpback whale songs include repeating refrains that rhyme It has been suggested that whales might use rhymes for exactly the same reasons that we 25 do: as devices to help them remember Whale songs can also be rather catchy When a few humpbacks from the Indian Ocean strayed into the Pacific, some of the whales they met there quickly changed their tunes – singing the new whales’ songs within three short years Some scientists are even tempted to speculate that a universal music awaits discovery And he took his attitude of getting close to the action to an extreme His photograph, The Death of a Loyalist Soldier is a prime example of this as Capa captures the very moment the soldier falls However, many have questioned the authenticity of this photograph, claiming that it was staged When World war II broke out, Capa was in New York, but he was soon back in Europe covering the war for Life magazine Some of his most famous work was created on 6th June 1944 when he swam ashore with the first assault on Omaha Beach in the D-‐Day invasion of Normandy Capa, armed only with two cameras, took more than one hundred photographs in the first hour of the landing, but a mistake in the darkroom during the drying of the film destroyed all but eight frames It was the images from these frames however that inspired the visual style of Steven Spielberg's Oscar winning movie ‘Saving Private Ryan’ When Life magazine published the photographs, they claimed that they were slightly out of focus, and Capa later used this as the title of his autobiographical account of the war Capa’s private life was no less dramatic He was friend to many of Hollywood’s directors, actors and actresses In 1943 he fell in love with the wife of actor John Austin His affair with her lasted until the end of the war and became the subject of his war memoirs He was at one time lover to actress Ingrid Bergman Their relationship finally ended in 1946 when he refused to settle in Hollywood and went off to Turkey 6 In 1947 Capa was among a group of photojournalists who founded Magnum Photos This was a co-‐ operative organisation set up to support photographers and help them to retain ownership of the copyright to their work 7 Capa went on to document many other wars He never attempted to glamorise war though, but to record the horror He once said, "The desire of any war photographer is to be put out of business." 8 Capa died as he had lived After promising not to photograph any more wars, he accepted an assignment to go to Indochina to cover the first Indochina war On May 25th 1954 Capa was accompanying a French regiment when he left his jeep to take some photographs of the advance and stepped on a land mine He was taken to a nearby hospital, still clutching his camera, but was pronounced dead on arrival He left behind him a testament to the horrors of war and a standard for photojournalism that few others have been able to reach 9 Capa’s legacy has lived on through and in 1966 his brother Cornell founded the International Fund for Concerned Photography in his honor There is also a Robert Capa Gold Medal, which is given to the photographer who publishes the best photographic reporting from abroad with evidence of exceptional courage But perhaps his greatest legacy of all is the haunting images of the human struggles that he captured.Top of Form 55: Why did Capa change his name? Why, aside from a propensity for narcissism, was Hooker so confident? Hooker had used spies, analysts, and even hot air balloons to compile a vast amount of intelligence about Lee’s army He had discerned, for example, that Lee had only 61,000 men to Hooker’s own 134,000 Buoyed by his superior numbers, Hooker covertly moved 70,000 of his men fifteen miles up and across the river, and then ordered them to sneak back down to position themselves behind Lee’s army In effect, Hooker had cut off the Confederate soldiers in front and behind They were trapped Satisfied with his advantage, Hooker became convinced that Lee’s only option was to retreat to Richmond, thus assuring a Union victory Yet Lee, despite his disadvantages of both numbers and position, did not retreat Instead, he moved his troops into position to attack Union soldiers who tried to warn Hooker that Lee was on the offensive were dismissed as cowards Having become convinced that Lee had no choice but to retreat, Hooker began to ignore reality When Lee’s army attacked the Union soldiers at 5:00 p.m., they were eating supper, completely unprepared for battle They abandoned their rifles and fled as Lee’s troops came shrieking out of the brush, bayonets drawn Against all odds, Lee won the Battle of Chancellorsville, and Hooker’s forces withdrew in defeat Question 55 Based on information in the text, it can be concluded that Hooker lost the Battle of Chancellorsville mostly because of his A: ignorance B: overconfidence C: vanity D: faulty information Question 56 The contrast drawn between Lee and Hooker in paragraph 2 is intended to A: prove that two men with very different values could end up in similar positions of power B: provide support for the idea that Lee was a more virtuous person than Hooker, and therefore a better military commander C: imply that these men fundamentally differed in their approaches to nearly everything, including battle D: showcase the different backgrounds and personal histories of these two enemy soldiers Question 57 In paragraph 3, the author quotes Hooker as saying, “My plans are perfect And when I start to carry them out, may God have mercy on Bobby Lee, for I shall have none.” The author most likely includes this quote in order to Trang 7/10 A: provide an example of the way language has changed since 1863 B: foreshadow Hooker’s defeat at the hands of Lee’s army C: reveal that Hooker was a deeply religious man in spite of his lifestyle D: demonstrate Hooker’s belief in his own infallibility Question 58 Based on its use in paragraph 3, it can be inferred that the word propensity belongs to which of the following word groups?
