Date of planning: 28 th February 2010 Unit 12: MUSIC Period: 72 Section A: READING 1. Aim: By the end of the section, students will be able to understand more specific information about music 2. Skill: Guessing meaning in context, scanning for specific information 3. Method: Integrated, mainly communicative 4. Teaching aids: textbook, lesson plan, CD and cassette 5. Procedure: - Class Organization: (1m’) 10A1: absence: 10A2: absence: 10A4: absence: 10C1: absence: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities WARM UP (5 minutes) - Let students find some music they have know - Write kinds of music on board - Lead Ss to the unit BEFORE YOU READ (7 minutes) - Ask Ss about the instruments of music in the pictures in Vietnamese - Ask students work in pairs to read aloud the types of music in the first column and to match with its description in the second column - Go around and help if necessary - Ask students to give the answers - Ask Ss to read them loudly and correct pronunciation if necessary - Find some music they have ever know freely Eg: Some music: Pop, Jazz, rock ,classical music - Notice teacher introduce and guide - Reply freely - Work in pairs to discuss and match - Give their answers (2 pairs) - Read each of them individually 1 Key: 1 - b 2 - e 3 – d 4 – a 5 - c WHILE YOU READ (23 minutes) - Ask students to look through the passage and read in silence - Play the CD twice - Explain pronunciation and meaning of difficult words which appear in the passage communicate (v): giao tiếp emotion (n): tình cảm express (v): diễn tả convey (v): chuyển tải integral part (n): phần thiết yếu tone (n): âm điệu, giai điệu funeral (n): đám tang solemn (a): Ko vui, nghiêm trang, trọng thể mournful (a): tang thương lull (v): ru (ngủ) delight (v): làm cho vui vẻ - Ask students to read loudly the difficult words in chorus Task 1 - Instruct Ss to do the task 1 and ask them to do it - Help students if necessary - Ask Ss to give their answers Key: 1.communicate 2.lull 3.delights - Listen to the teacher, read the passage in silence and underline difficult words they can’t read right - Look listening to the passage - Ask some difficult words if necessary - Read in chorus twice - Listen to the teacher then do task 1 individually - Ask the teacher if necessary - Check and correct their 2 4.integral part 5.solemn 6.emotion 7.mournful Task 2: - Ask students to read the passage again then instruct them to answer the questions - Ask students to work in pairs to answer the questions - Help students if necessary - Ask Ss to give their answers and correct them Key: 1. AFTER YOU READ : (8 minutes) - Instruct students to work in pairs to answer the two question in the book 1. How many roles of music are mentioned in the text? 2. Aim: By the end of the section, students will be able to - Understand about kinds of music - Talk about favorite kinds of music 2. Skill: talking about favorite kinds of music 3. Method: Integrated, mainly communicative 4. Teaching aids: textbook, lesson plan 5. Procedure: - Class Organization: (1m’) 10A1: absence: 10A2: absence: 10A4: absence: 10C1: absence: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities WARM UP (5 minutes) - Ask students to keep book close then ask them the questions: 1. Do you like music? 2. What kinds of music do you like? 3. What are your favorite bands? BEFORE YOU SPEAK (12 minutes) Task 1 - Instruct students to read and answer the questions about Ha Anh - Let them work in pairs to do the task - Call on some students to give their answers in front of the class - Listen to students and correct mistakes - Keep books close - Listen to the teacher - Answer the question Eg: 1.Yes, I like 2. pop music 3.The Backstreet Boys - Listen to teacher - Read the passage then answer questions in pairs - Answer the questions to teacher individually then ask and answer in pairs 4 Key: 1. She likes pop music 2. Because it keeps her happy 3. The Backstreet Boys 4. She listens to music all the time WHILE YOU SPEAK: (23 minutes) Task 2 - Instruct Ss to practice the task through the example: Eg: kind of music A: What kind of music do you like? B: I like classical music. A: Why do you like it? B: Because it is relaxing. - Ask students to ask the questions to get information to complete the table in the task 2 in groups - Walk round and help them - Ask some groups to stand up to practice speaking loudly and complete the table - Listen and correct mistakes Task 3 - Instruct Ss to practice task 3 through the example Eg: + Both B and C like classical music. They like it because + B likes classical music but C prefers jazz. - Ask students to tell the classmates about what they have found out about their partners - Walk round to see Ss practice - Ask some students to stand up and tell loudly - Listen and correct mistakes AFTER YOU SPEAK (3 minutes) - Sum up the practice and note some things when - Look at student’s book - Listen to the teacher - Ask and answer about kinds of music - Work in groups to practice speaking - Listen to the teacher - Do task 3 individually - Speak loudly - Listen to the teacher 5 speaking HOMEWORK (2 minutes) - Ask students to practice speaking again and to prepare Part C- Listening at home - Write down the homework 6 Date of planning: 6 th March 2010 Unit 12: MUSIC Period: 74 Section C: LISTENING 1. Aim: By the end of the section, students will be able to - Listen to get specific information about Vietnamese composer Van Cao 2. Skills: - Listening and deciding on True or False statements - Listening and answer questions 3. Method: Integrated, mainly communicative 4. Teaching aids: textbook, lesson plan, CD and cassette 5. Procedure: - Class Organization: (1m’) 10A1: absence: 10A2: absence: 10A4: absence: 10C1: absence: Teacher’s activities Students’ activities WARM UP: (5 minutes) - Ask students to close the books - Ask students some question about Van Cao 1. What song do all students always sing on every Monday morning under national flag? 2. Do you know who the composer was? BEFORE YOU LISTEN: (7 minutes) - Instruct Ss to say about Van Cao in the picture in pairs - Walk round, listen and help students - Ask Ss to find the given songs by Van Cao - Ask Ss to listen to teacher and repeat then read - Close the books - Listen to the teacher’s questions and answer the questions 1. Tien Quan Ca 2. It is Van Cao. - Work in pairs to talk about Van Cao - Point them freely: Van Cao’s songs: Suoi Mo, Tien Quan Ca, Truong Ca Song Lo, Lang Toi - Listen and repeat in chorus 7 loudly the words sweet and gentle rousing exciting boring lyrical solemn - Listen and check pronunciation WHILE YOU LISTEN (20 minutes) Task 1 - Instruct Ss to do the listening by asking students to read 5 statements and to guess the contend of the listening - Explain some words or phrases which students can’t understand - Ask students to listen to the CD twice and do task 1 - Correct the answers by letting Ss listen to the cues of their answers - Key: 1F 2F 3T 4F 5F Task 2 - Ask students to look through the questions - Ask students to listen to the CD again and to answer them - Help Ss find right answers by letting them listen to the cues of the answers Key: 1. It is “my favourite Musician” 2. Tien Quan Ca 3. It is hard and solemn. It makes him feel great proud of his country AFTER YOU LISTEN (10 minutes) - Read loudly in chorus - Listen to the teacher and then read the statements independently - Listen to teacher and take notes - Listen to the CD carefully and do the task - Listen again and check - Keep their books open and look at the questions - Listen to the CD and find answers - Listen and speak them out 8 - Instruct Ss to discuss the idea of Quang Hung about Van Cao’s music - Let them work in groups - Walk round and help students to discuss HOMEWORK (3 minutes) - Ask students to write a story about composer Van Cao - Remember them to prepare the section: Writing at home - Listen to the teacher - Discuss in groups -Listen to the teacher and write down homework 9 Date of planning: 6 th March 2010 Unit 12: MUSIC Period: 75 Section D: WRITING 1. Aim: By the end of the section, students will be able to learn how to write a profile based on prompts provided related to music 3. Skills: Writing a profile 3. Method: Integrated, mainly communicative 4. Teaching aids: textbook, lesson plan 5.
