enlightened individuals with clearly articulated rights and the opportunity for
individual achievement and education It was believed that in a free nation where the power belongs to the people, the commitment to education defines the progress of that democracy and is the catalyst for future progress This core value has not only stood the test of time but has also grown in importance In this new Information Era and international economy, education is an increasingly vital commodity, a precursor of potential success and a driving force of chance It is important to recognize, however, that we approach education today differently than in the past, partly because the kinds
of jobs people had didn’t require the kind of basic education and specialized training that is often required in the workforce today In the 1950s, for instance, only 20 percent of American jobs were classified as professional, 20 percent as skilled; and 60 percent as unskilled Today, our world has changed The proportion of unskilled jobs has fallen to 20 percent, while jobs now account for at least 60 percent of the workforce Even more important, almost every job today increasingly requires a combination of academic knowledge and practical skills that require learning throughout a lifetime.

III Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions
Telling the Whole Food Truth As a teacher of whole-food vegetarian cookery, I
do feel a certain sympathy with the ‘Men for Meat’ group There is both confusion and just plain, unappetizing cooking in this area, when a whole-food/ vegetable diet should and can be highly nutritious and utterly delicious.
The words ‘whole-food’ and ‘vegetarian’ are not synonymous: vegetarians do not eat any ‘fish, flesh or fowl’ Most eat dairy products Those who don’t are called vegans I tell students not to turn vegetarian until they have become knowledgeable about nutrition, and especially about protein It’s very easy to become a sick vegetarian.
And a whole-food diet just consists of eating the whole of food, with nothing added, and nothing taken away For example, you eat whole-wheat flour, not white flour, which has had had bleach added In all, no refined carbohydrates are eaten and very fatty and additive-laden foods are avoided and the stress is on fresh products of the best quality And that’s all - except you must then find recipes which are both healthy and delicious because you’ll have to cook it all yourself Very few ready- bought meals fulfill both requirements.

Experiments have shown that in selecting personnel for a job, interviewing is at best a
hindrance, and may even cause harm These studies have disclosed that the judgments of
interviewers differ markedly and bear little or no relationship to the adequacy of the job applicants
Of the many reasons why this should be the case, three in particular stand out.
The first reason is related to an error of judgment known as the halo effect If a person has
one noticeable good trait, their other characteristics will be judged as better than they really are
Thus, an individual who dresses smartly and shows self-confidence is likely to be judged capable of doing a job well regardless of his or her real ability.
Interviewers are also prejudiced by an effect called the primacy effect This error occurs when interpretation of later information is distorted by earlier connected information Hence, in an
interview situation, the interviewer spends most of the interview trying to confirm the impression
given by the candidate in the first few moments Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that such an impression is unrelated to the aptitude of the applicant.
The phenomenon known as the contrast effect also skews the judgment of interviewers A
suitable candidate may be underestimated because he or she contrasts with a previous one who appears exceptionally intelligent Likewise, an average candidate who is preceded by one who gives
a weak showing may be judged as more suitable than he or she really is.
Since interviews as a form of personnel selection have been shown to be inadequate, other selection procedures have been devised which more accurately predict candidate suitability Of the
various tests devised, the predictor which appears to do this most successfully is cognitive ability as
measured by a variety of verbal and spatial tests

Very few people in the modern world obtain their food supply by hunting and gathering in the natural environment surrounding their homes This method of harvesting from nature’s provision
is the oldest known subsistence strategy and has been practised for at least the last two million years
It was, indeed, the only way to obtain food until rudimentary farming and the domestication of wild
animals were introduced about 10,000 years ago
Because hunter-gatherers have fared poorly in comparison with their agricultural cousins,
their numbers have dwindled, and they have been forced to live in marginal environments, such as
deserts and arctic wastelands In higher latitudes, the shorter growing seasons have restricted the
availability of plant life Such conditions have caused a greater dependence on hunting, and on
fishing along the coasts and waterways The abundance of vegetation in the lower latitudes of the tropics, on the other hand, has provided a greater opportunity for gathering a variety of plants In short, the environmental differences have restricted the diet and have limited possibilities for the development of subsistence societies
Contemporary hunter-gatherers may help us understand our prehistoric ancestors We know from the observation of modern hunter-gatherers in both Africa and Alaska that a society based on hunting and gathering must be very mobile While the entire community camps in a central location,
a smaller party harvests the food within a reasonable distance from the camp When the food in the area has become exhausted, the community moves on to exploit another site We also notice seasonal migration patterns evolving for most hunter-gatherers, along with a strict division of labor between the sexes These patterns of behavior may be similar to those practised by mankind during the Paleolithic Period

a single pianist, a small band, or a full – scale orchestra; large movie theatres could buy sound effect machines Research into sound that was reproduced at exactly at the same time as the pictures – called “synchronized sound” – began soon after the very first films were shown With synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen could sing and speak As early as 1896, the newly invented gramophone, which played a large disc carrying music and dialogue, was used as a sound system The biggest disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become unsynchronized if, for example, the gramophone needle jumped or if the speed of the projector changed This system was
only effective for a single song or dialogue sequence.
In the “sound-on-film” system, sound was recorded as a series of marks on celluloid which
could be read by an optical sensor These signals would be placed on the film alongside the image,
guaranteeing synchronization Short feature films were produced in this way as early as 1922 This system eventually brought us “talking picture”.

In the course its history, human inventions have dramatically increased the average amount of
energy available for use per person Primitive peoples in cold regions burned wood and animal dung
to heat their caves, cook food, and drive off animals by fire The first step toward the developing of more efficient fuels was taken when people discovered that they could use vegetable oils and animal

fats in lieu of gathered or cut wood Charcoal gave off a more intensive heat than wood and was more easily obtainable than organic fats The Greeks first began to use coal for metal smelting in the
14th century, but it did not come extensive use until the Industrial Revolution.
In the 1700s, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, most energy used in the United States and other nations undergoing industrialization was obtained from perpetual and renewable sources, such as wood, water streams, domesticated animal labour, and wind These were predominantly locally available supplies By mid-1800s, 91 percent of all commercial energy consumed in the United States and European countries was obtained from wood However, at the beginning of the 20th century, coal became a major energy source and replaced wood in industrializing countries Although in most regions and climate zones wood was more readily
accessible than coal, the latter represents a more concentrate source of energy In 1910, natural gas
and oil firmly replaced coal as the main source of fuel because they are lighter and, therefore,
cheaper to transport They burned more cleanly than coal and polluted less Unlike coal, oil could be
refined to manufacture liquid fuels for vehicles, a very important consideration in early 1900s, when the automobile arrived on the scene.
By 1984, nonrenewable fossil fuels, such as oil, coal, and natural gas, provided over 82 percent of the commercial and industrial energy used in the world Small amounts of energy were derived from nuclear fission, and the remaining 16 percent came from burning direct perpetual and renewable fuels, such as biomass Between 1700 and 1986, a large number of countries shifted from the use of energy from local sources to a centralized generation of hydropower and solar energy converted to electricity The energy derived from nonrenewable fossil fuels has created a dependency
on a finite resource that will have to be replaced.
Alternative fuel sources are numerous, and shale oil and hydrocarbons are just two examples The extraction of shale oil from large deposits in Asia and European regions has proven to be labor consuming and costly The resulting product is sulfur-and nitrogen rich, and large-scale extractions are presently prohibitive Similarly, the extraction of hydrocarbons from tar sands in Alberta and Utah is complex Semi-solid hydrocarbons cannot be easily separated from the sandstone and limestone that carry them, and modern technology is not sufficiently versatile for a large-scale removal of the material However, both sources of fuel may eventually be needed as petroleum prices continue to rise and limitations in fossil fuel availability make alternative deposits more attractive.

irritating waste of time: some people get by on very little, others claim they can not exist without at
least ten hours, but nobody can do without sleep completely.
Our night’s sleep does not just consist of a steady phase of gradually deepening sleep It alternates between two stages: Non-dreaming or ordinary sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) or dreaming sleep As soon as we fall asleep, we go straight into non-dreaming sleep for an hour or so, then into
REM sleep for about 15 minutes, then back into non-dreaming sleep It alternates in this way for the
rest of the night, with non-dreaming sleep tending to last longer at the beginning of the night
Non-dreaming sleep occupies three-quarters of our night’s sleep, about a quarter of it deep and the rest
fairly light.

It is widely believed that sleep repairs the body and makes good the damage caused by being awake However, its main function is to refresh the brain Experts believe that probably only about two-thirds of our sleep is necessary for repairing and refreshing the brain, with the most valuable sleep coming in the first few hours of the non-dreaming period, the last few hours of sleep are not so essential The brain can manage quite well with reduced sleep as long as it is uninterrupted sleep The quality of sleep is important A study conducted in the USA looked at short sleepers, who slept for 5.5 hours on average, and long sleepers, who had 8.5 hours or more It is discovered after a variety of tests that the long sleepers were poor sleepers, had twice as much REM sleep as the short sleepers, appeared to sleep longer to make up for poor sleep, and did not wake up in the morning refreshed Similarly, people who sleep deeply are not necessarily getting a better quality of sleep than shallow sleepers Deep sleepers can feel tired the following day, so six hours of good sleep is worth more than eight hours of troubled sleep.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 26 to 35.
A radio telescope is a radio receiver that “sees” radio waves Unlike a normal telescope, which sees light, a radio telescope is used primarily in the area of astronomy because it can detect radio waves that are emitted by celestial objects Such objects in space, also called radio objects, can be things such as hot gas, electrons, and wavelengths given off by different atoms and molecules.
The first radio telescope was invented by Grote Reber in 1937 He was an American who graduated with a degree in engineering He went on to work as an amateur radio operator and later decided to try to build his own radio telescope in his backyard Reber’s first two radio receivers failed to pick up any signals from outer space, but in 1938, his third radio telescope successfully picked up radio waves from space.
A radio telescope consists of a large parabolic-shaped dish antenna or a combination of two or more The significance of the parabolic shape allows for the incoming radio waves to be
concentrated on one focal point, allowing the signals to be picked up as strongly as possible A
larger dish means that more signals can be received and focalized.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the largest radio telescope of the time was invented with a seventy-six-meter telescope although larger telescopes have been made since then The largest
current radio telescope in the world is the RATAN-600 in Russia, whose diameter is 576 meters It
has provided valuable feedback of the sun’s radio wavelengths and atmosphere The largest radio telescope in Europe is a 100-meter diameter telescope in Germany, and the largest radio telescope in the United States is the Big Ear in the state of Ohio The largest array of telescopes is the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in India.
Radio telescopes have provided scientists with valuable information about our universe One of the most important functions of radio telescopes is their ability to allow scientists to track different space probes, the unmanned space missions in outer space Radio telescopes allow for the travel of space probes into places like the surface of Mars that are too dangerous for men to explore Without radio wave technology, scientists would not know much of what inhabits the universe nor would
they be able to see it Radio waves are our eyes and ears in outer space By Timothy Hall,

The ability to conduct electricity is one of the key properties of a metal Other solid material such as silicon can conduct electricity but only effectively at certain temperatures Also, some substances such as salt (sodium chloride) can conduct when molten or when dissolved in water The ability of metals to conduct electricity is due to how their atoms bond together In order to bond
together the metal atoms lose at least one of their outermost electrons This leaves the metal atoms
with a positive charge and they are now strictly ions The lost electrons are free to move in what are
Trang 33Tuyển tập 80 đề thi thử THPT QUỐC GIA môn Tiếng Anh năm 2015 (kèm đáp án)
known as a sea of electrons Since the electrons are negatively charged they attract the ions and this
is what keeps the structure together.
An electric current is a flow of charge and since the electrons in the sea of electrons are free to move they can be made to flow in one direction when a source of electrical energy such as a battery
is connected to the metal Hence we have an electric current flowing through the wire, and this is what makes metals such good conductors of electricity The only other common solid conducting material that pencil users are likely to encounter is graphite (what the ‘lead’ of a pencil is made from) Graphite is a form of carbon and again the carbon atoms bond in such a way that there is a sea
of electrons that can be made to flow as an electric current Likewise, if we have an ionic substance like salt we can make the electrically charged ions flow to create a current but only when those ions are free to move, either when the substance is a liquid or dissolved in water In its solid state an ionic substance like salt cannot conduct electricity as its charged ions cannot flow.
Electrical insulators are substances that cannot conduct electricity well either, because they
contain no charged particles or any charged particles they might contain do not flow easily Water
itself is a poor conductor or electricity as it does not contain a significant amount of fully charged particles (the ends of a water molecule are partly charged but overall the molecule is neutral)
However, most water we encounter does contain dissolved charged particles, so it will be more conductive than pure water Many of the problems that occur when touching electrical devices with wet hands result from the ever-present salt that is left on our skin through perspiration and it
dissolves in the water to make it more conductive.

functioning: sleep and wake cycles, levels of alertness, performance, mood, hormone levels,
digestion, body temperature and so on It regulates all of these functions on a 24-hour basis and is
called the circadian clock (from the Latin, circa “about” + dies “day”).
This body clock programmes us to be sleepy twice a day, between 3-5 a.m and again between 3-5 p.m Afternoon tea and siesta times are all cultural responses to our natural biological sleepiness in
the afternoon One of the major causes of the travelers’ malady known as jet lag is the
non-alignment of a person’s internal body clock with clocks in the external world Crossing different time zones confuses the circadian clock, which then has to adjust to the new time and patterns of light and activity To make matters more complex, not all internal body functions adjust at the same rate So your sleep/wake may adjust to a new time zone at one rate, while your temperature adjusts at a different pace Your digestion may be on a different schedule altogether.
Though we live in a 24-hour day, the natural tendency of the body clock is to extend our day beyond 24 hours It is contrary to our biological programming to shrink our day That is why travelling in a westward direction is more body-clock friendly than flying east NASA studies of long haul pilots showed that westward travel was associated with significantly better sleep quantity and quality than eastward flights When flying west, you are “extending” your day, thus travelling in the natural direction of your internal clock Flying eastward will involve “shrinking” or reducing your day and is in direct opposition to your internal clock’s natural tendency.
One of the more common complaints of travelers is that their sleep becomes disrupted There are many reasons for this: Changing time zones and schedules, changing light and activity levels, trying
to sleep when your body clock is programmed to be awake, disruption of the internal circadian clock
and working longer hours Sleep loss, jet lag and fatigue can seriously affect our ability to function
well Judgment and decision-making can be reduced by 50 %, attention by 75 percent, memory by 20 percent and communication by 30 percent It is often suggested that you adjust your watch as soon as you board a plane, supposedly to try to help you adjust to your destination’s schedule as soon as you arrive But it can take the body clock several days to several weeks to fully adjust to a new time zone.
