Badly polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. Pollution of the soil reduces the amount of land that is available for growing food. The pollution problem is very complicated because much pollution is caused by things that benefit people. For example, exhaust from automobiles causes a large percentage of air pollution. But the automobiles provides transportation for millions of people. Factories discharge much of the material that pollutes the air and water, but factories give employment to a large number of people. Thus, to end or greatly reduce pollution immediately, people would have to stop using many things that benefit them. Pollution can be gradually reduced in several ways. Scientists and engineers can work to find ways to lessen the amount of pollution that such things as automobiles and factories cause. Governments can pass and enforce laws that require businesses and individuals to stop, or to cut down on certain polluting activities. Questions: 1. What is necessary for the survival of all living things? …………………………………………………………………………………………………… 2. What can polluted water and soil cause? ……………………………………………………………………………………………………. 3. Well, I must admit that such thing didn’t cross my mind until last February when I got a letter from the British Council, saying that I had won a language course in England. The polite question mentioned was the one I had to ask on arrrival in Parkston, a picturesque part of Poole with lot of semi-detached houses on either side of each street. What struck me most was the kindness of an old lady, who happened to leave Safeway’s just after my getting off the coach. Not only did she show me where to phone for a taxi, but she also gave me a hand with the laggage. I was really surprised, too, when the taxi driver got out of the car and helped me put the bags into the boot. I immediately thought of Polish taxi drivers who usually do not make the slightest effor to help you, apart from pressing the right button and waiting for the boot to open.
