LESSON PLAN: WRITING Name of the lesson: UNIT 14: RECREATION Writing section Class: 11 th form Teacher in charge: Nguyễn Minh Thiền Instructor: Ms. Dang Thi Hong Giang Time allotted: 45 minutes Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to • Know and use transition words that add information to write a paragraph. Skills: writing (main skill), speaking (sub skill) Lexical items: • Verb(s): to put up, • Noun(s): bamboo pole dance, tug-of-war, campsite, campfire Teaching aids: pictures, posters PROCEDURE I. Warm-up (5 mins)  T lets Ss play “Slap the Board” game.  T divides class into two groups. Each group chooses 3 representatives to play the game.  T sticks a poster on the board.  T gives instruction: “In the poster, there are 6 pictures. I am holding 6 phrases that describe 6 pictures. When I read out loud one phrase, you have to slap the picture corresponding to the phrase. The faster one will get one mark. After the game, which team gets more marks will be the winner.”  T checks Ss’ understanding of the instruction.  Ss play the game.  From the phrases, T leads in the lesson. II. Pre-writing 1. Vocabulary teaching (7mins)  T uses some techniques to teach some vocabulary from the writing section • to put up (v)  explanation = to build sth • bamboo pole dance (v)  picture • tug-of-war (v)  picture • Campsite (n)  picture and explanation: a place where go camping. • Campfire (n)  picture  T says the words 2-3 times and asks them to repeat 2-3 times  T checks vocabulary: technique: Rub out and remember  Working arrangement: Ss work individually 2. Task (5 mins)  T asks Ss to work in groups of four.  T delivers hand-outs.  T gives instruction: “In the hand-out, there is a paragraph which sentences are in wrong order. Your duty now is to discuss and rearrange them to make a meaningful paragraph.”  T checks Ss’ understanding of the instruction.  After 2 minutes, T calls 2 Ss to write their answers on the BB.  T sticks the correct paragraph on the BB and checks their answers.  From the paragraph, T draws out the outline of the paragraph. 3. Brainstorming (5 mins)  T asks Ss: “What event did all of you take part in last two weeks?”  T asks Ss to work in pairs and have a small discussion on the topic: “What did you do last camping trip in Huyền Trân temple”  Ss’ duties are work in pairs and list as many things that they did last camping trip in Huyen Tran temple.  After 3 minutes T calls some Ss to present their ideas.  T comments and gives feedback  Working arrangement: Ss work in pairs III. While writing Task 1 (15 mins)  T asks Ss to work individually to write a short paragraph of about 150-200 words to describe last camping trip they took part in Huyen Tran temple.  Before Ss start working, T provides transition words that add information to connect ideas. TRANSITIONS THAT ADD INFORMATION ORDER WORDS First, second, …. Next, then, last, finally  T calls one S to write their paragraph on the BB.  T comments and gives feedback. IV. Post-writing (5 mins)  Ask Ss to change their paragraph and give peer correction  Call some Ss read their paragraph. V. Homework giving (2 mins)  Ask Ss to prepare for the next class - Language Focus in page 144. It was a two-day long trip. A Because the trip lasted only two-day long, we did not prepare much. We just bought some cookies, drinks, and some small gifts for friends studying there. We started the journey at 10 a.m., and arrived in Danang at 1 p.m. We rested in a local guest house later on. That night, together with thousands of people in the city, we enjoyed fireworks displays from Japan, Portugal as well as Vietnam. They were terrific. D The day after, we went around the city. After the lunch at a small restaurant, we visited Hoi An - the ancient town. It was very beautiful. At around 5 p.m. we left Danang city with a wish that we could stay a bit longer. B All of us were quite tired after the trip, but we all felt happy. .
