Trang 5PERSONAL REFLECTION
What excites me most about doing research is discovering useful conclusions on a topic I've wondered about before but haven't had a chance to find an answer to Self- study and project implementation from the first steps such as finding a topic, and finding relevant supporting research papers until choosing the right survey question, sending the survey to each participant, waiting for results, processing data, and writing conclusions for research papers, every stage requires the operator to research meticulously, carefully and with high logic Although there are still many difficulties and surprises, the research work makes me feel excited and eager to find answers from the majority to conclude and show the value of our new research topic
The biggest problem our group encountered while working on the project was proving the interest and usefulness of our research topic We have difficulty when the respondents to the survey are university students, who are mature enough and not
too interested in our research, so their answers sometimes lack honesty and
accuracy VVe spent a lot of time finding survey questions that were short, easy to
understand, but effective for reaching conclusions Finding an objective, diverse, and
logical result as we expected was a challenging process for our group
After completing this research project, our team realized that one thing we could have done better is to follow the right steps to find out the relevant survey topic without wasting too much time We spent a lot of time and hesitated in choosing a research topic for our project Because at the beginning we didn't understand and didn't think deeply enough to choose what was a feasible topic to do, we had to
Trang 6spend time choosing over and over again to find the accepted one Our group realized that the selection of survey topics and survey subjects is extremely important, directly affecting the success of the research We made some mistakes
and omissions the first time we did our research, but we believe we could have done
better with more exposure and be glad to gain useful experience
Trang 7CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
1.1 Research background
In our interconnected world, foreign language proficiency is vital for education, employment, and cultural exchange As English language learning gains importance, understanding the factors influencing student motivation becomes crucial Among the myriad of influences on students’ motivation, parental involvement stands out as an important factor (Sengénil, 2022)
Recognizing the impacts of parental involvement, researchers have focused
on studying the role of parents in enhancing children’s educational motivation
(Gonida & Cortina, 2014; Johnson & Hull, 2014; Wilder, 2014), especially in English
(Gardner, 1968) With English being the most widely spoken language globally, parents in non-English speaking regions like Asia are particularly concerned about their children's English learning This concern is especially relevant for university students, as English proficiency significantly impacts their future career prospects Therefore, this study aimed to explore whether parental involvement positively influences motivation to learn English among first and second-year Business English students at Ho Chi Minh Banking University, who are mature enough to make decisions independently
Trang 81.4 Significance of the study
This study aims to offer a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between parental involvement and students’ English learning motivation, thereby providing parents, teachers, and educators with strategies for fostering a supportive and stimulating learning environment
Trang 9CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 Introduction
This literature review seeks to explore the impact of parental involvement on students’ English learning motivation It focuses on three main sections: defining parental involvement, exploring the role of parents in enhancing students’ English learning motivation, and providing insights into strategies that are effective in enhancing students’ desire to learn English
2.2 Definitions of parental involvement
Multiple theories exist regarding parental involvement For example, Anderson and Minke (2007) refer to parental involvement as active participation in the educational process Similarly, parental participation is described as collaborative actions with teachers and school staff to enhance children’s academic performance (McNeal, 2014) More accurately, parental involvement is defined as parental
attitudes, behaviours, styles, or activities both inside and outside the school aiming
to support children's academic and/or behavioural success in their current school (Abdul-Adil & Farmer, 2006)
2.3 The role of parents in enhancing students’ English learning motivation Previous researchers have consistently asserted a strong link between parental involvement and students’ English learning motivation, claiming that parental involvement can effectively boost students’ motivation to learn English (Sampelan & Sengkey, 2022; Sumanti & Muljani, 2021) Bland (2018) argued that parent-oriented inspiration is a distinct type of motivation that is separated from internal motivations and this type of motivation emphasizes the positive influence that parental involvement can have on a student's motivation to learn English In
Trang 10contrast, Martinez's (2015) research found limited correlation between parental engagement and students’ English learning motivation
2.4 Effective strategies in enhancing students’ English learning motivation 2.4.1 Moral support
In their study, Ekiz and Kulmetov (2016) revealed that learners displayed enhanced motivation when they received parental support and encouragement in their English language learning journey They also discovered that the students felt more motivated to learn English when their parents stress the importance of the language
2.4.2 Academic support
Fostering a positive learning environment is another method that parents use
By giving the students a place where they can study comfortably without distraction, they feel that they are part of a supportive community that values their efforts This sense of belonging motivates them to engage actively in learning and strive for improvement (Bucholz & Sheffler, 2009)
2.5 Conclusion
In summary, while most researchers agreed that parental involvement can positively impact students’ motivation to learn English, a dissenting scholar found a limited correlation between parental involvement and English learning motivation Furthermore, researchers found that by offering moral and academic support, parents can motivate their children to learn English Overall, existing studies have limited diversity as they focus strictly on childhood and early adolescence, making accurate comparisons challenging To address this gap, this study would focus on university students, examining the effects of parental involvement on their English
Trang 11learning motivation with the intention of contributing to the current body of literature and offering practical insights for future researchers.
Trang 12CHAPTER Ill METHODOLOGY 3.1 Study design
This study employed a non-experimental quantitative research design The data collection would be cross-sectional, with participants completing the survey only once The reference period was retrospective, gathering students’ past experiences
of parental involvement in their English learning
3.2 Method of data collection, sample and sampling strategy
Data for this study was collected via an online questionnaire using Google Forms The questionnaire was developed based on the studies by Dang, Le and Ha (2021) It consisted of Likert-scale items and multiple-choice questions to measure relevant variables aligned with the research objectives The survey was administered
to 100 Business English students from Ho Chi Minh University of Banking, representing a population of 500 freshmen and sophomores In order to ensure an adequate representation of participants from both academic years, the sample was divided into 50 freshmen and 50 sophomores As for why only freshmen and sophomores were chosen, they are the academic years during which parental involvement still holds a significant influence, considering that students are still adapting to the new university environment Therefore, they require the most help and assistance from their parents (Lowe & Dotterer, 2018) Additionally, quota was chosen as the sampling strategy due to limited time for primary data gathering

The respondents’ academic year was represented in the pie chart According
to the graph, half of the participants were freshmen, the other half were sophomores 4.2 The impact of parental involvement on Participants’ English learning motivation
4.2.1 The methods parents used to enhance students’ English learning motivation
The table below demonstrates the students’ levels of agreement regarding the various approaches that their parents used to motivate them to learn English The
students’ feedback was evaluated on a scale of four points, where a score of 1
indicates strong disagreement, 2 means disagreement, 3 implies agreement, and 4
suggests strong agreement

of this method could be due to the belief that emphasizing the relevance of English for future employment would provide the children with a clear sense of purpose and tangible benefits in their language learning journey This idea is supported by Safarina (2023), who observed that students would show higher levels of motivation and engagement in language learning when their parents consistently highlight the real-world implications of English for future career orientation Following to the highest mean score, encouragement from parents to get students learn English hard
Trang 15ranked second with a mean score recorded at 3.26 The finding suggested that most students agreed that their parents would primarily use this approach to enhance their motivation to learn English This might be attributed to the emotional support provided by parents This support contributes to building the child's self- confidence and belief in their abilities, as emphasized by Hattie (2008) Similarly, research conducted by Chalak and Kassaian (2010) and Ghazi et al (2010) suggested that parental encouragement plays a vital role in boosting children's

contribute to motivation, the cultivation of English interests, and the enhancement of
their children’s school-based abilities (Rahman et al., 2017) Moreover, Dang et al (2021) stated that students were more inclined to learn English when their parents encouraged them Another interesting method to look at is supporting the students when they encounter difficulties in learning English; it had the second highest mean score, averaging around 2.8 This implies that the method was often used by their parents to boost their learning motivation One possible explanation for this occurrence is that by engaging with their child's English learning progress and
