Figure 3.1 Students’ frequency of using GT on the Translation process.

The pie chart represents the frequency of BE students, intake 61 using GT on their English-Vietnamese translation process in study Overall, almost all students of

BE Department intake 61 have the habit of using GT when translating There are

20 students who always use GT in the translation process, which accounts for 20% of all respondences The number of students in BE Department often using this tool in their tasks was three times as much as those who choose the answer

"always" It comes as no surprise that only a small fraction of those who rarely use translation app, remaining only percent while none of them have ever used translation GT before The proportion of students who answer “sometime” is only 14% Consequently, it is undeniable that GT has been widely used and we can understand that students spend a great deal of time on using GT on the English- Vietnamese translation process.

The reason for regular usage of this tool firstly might come from the fact that nowadays students are familiar as well as adaptive with using technology in their

Tran Thị Dung — 11191180 - Business English 61C translation process because all of them have smartphones with available access to the Internet easily through the University’s wifi systems or 4G, Additionally, as

BE students have taken multiple courses on lexicology, pronunciation, phonetics, and phonology from their first year, and at least 2 translation courses or other purposes that using GT would enable them to quickly search for information for practice In other words, GT has met the demand of students and transformed a tool that helps them improve their skills.

The weighted arithmetic mean formulation, which is found in the writings of early Indian mathematicians, was the method of data calculation used in the study The Arithmetic mean refers to a value that is calculated by dividing the total number of values in a set by the sum of its elements.

— Ax, + bx, + cx; + dx¿ + exs a a: the total amount of students evaluating 1 b: the total amount of students evaluating 2 c: the total amount of students evaluating 3 d: the total amount of students evaluating 4 e: the total amount of students evaluating 5 n: The sum of all participants

To directly evaluate attitudes, several different types of rating scales have been devised (i.e the person knows their attitude is being studied) The Likert scale is most widely applied (1932) Therefore, the researcher decided to use this method in the research The Likert scale, a five-point scale, is used to allow people indicate how strongly they agree or disagree with a given statement The scale described in detail in the table below:

Score interval (Mean) Evaluation criteria

Table 3.1 Evaluation Criteria for Likert Scale Questions

After using the formula into the results collected from questions, the researcher get the table below:

I use GT because of my lack of writing confidence

Based on the above table, all of the characteristics were either very high or of a medium level There is one factor appearing to be ranked as low level However, some criteria are used by BE students more than the others.

From the results, it is undeniable that BE students usually use GT to translate sentences, paragraphs with 3.67 and 3.75 respectively In contrast, a low tendency of BE students is indicated in translating whole essays or articles It is evident that

BE students have a high tendency to use Google Translate on the Process of English-Vietnamese Translation

GT is advantageous throughout the view of the students This result confirmed a survey by Groves & Mundt (2015) that GT is a free and simple to use web-based machine translation tool Then, Medvedev (2016) stated that GT may be used both inside and outside of the classroom According to Pena (2011), who was mentioned by Case (2015), GT provides students with writing suggestions.

Besides, a lot of students stated that they are not confident in translating without using GT on the process of English - Vietnamese translation The influence level is 3.38, which is medium level Most students now find it difficult to translate unfamiliar or new words and phrases or teminologies.

The translation results when using Google Translafe

Students that use GT receive results that are at a medium level in terms of points. This statistic shouldn't come as a surprise since GT isn't capable of feeling or expressing GT , which are technological items, cannot fill the same role as people. Currently, only individuals are able to translate in a particular way that closely matches the context Although GT's use of artificial intelligence can result in better translations on a sentence-by-sentence basis, this can not compare to a human's ability to read sentences and phrases when revisiting passages or previous text, the type of the document being translated, current news or events that can be related to the article, socio-cultural references, and many other factors.

Human translators do not perform translations based on the current document or the article they are working on When the message of the translated sentence, phrase or word is ambiguous, they decide on the appropriate translation by carefully examining the context GT may eventually learn to do this but until now, humans have done this more precisely.

This result is in agreement with the results of a research done in 2003, in which Krasimir Angelov reported that the text produced by translation applications was robotic, choppy, and not culturally appropriate He also stressed the fact that when

Tran Thị Dung — 11191180 - Business English 61C it comes to literature or poetry, the computer doesn't appear to be capable of understanding the writers’ special and complex ideas or emotions These translation applications are not yet able to develop, modify, or create phrases or words to match the source texts, which is necessary in some situations where the translators’ creativity is required.

Using Google Translate helps you save time in

Table 3.4 The efficiencies of using Google Translate for Translation

Itis clear from the result that the time saved by the process on English - Vietnamese translation was one of the most important aspects among other factors in the chart with 3.68 points Indeed, if you need a rapid translation on your phone or computer

Tran Thị Dung — 11191180 - Business English 61C browser, Google Translate is a useful platform Just enter the source language at translate.google.com, choose your target language, and click Translate Google Translate is a helpful tool for students who have a lot of work that they need to finish fast in order to remain on time.

The result is also consistent with the research of a previous author, Tatsumi (2012) also presented a large-scale experiment on post-editing machine translation among experienced Japanese translators The results also revealed that with matches of approximately 75%, post-editing skills of machine translation output might provide "excellent enough" translation at a similar rate as professionals Although the research focused on the benefits of translation applications, it didn't appear to explore the importance of many other aspects of the devices.

The process of English - Vietnamese translation such as idiom, context, and terminology that GT can not solve the problems regarding specialized sectors because each field has numerous terminologies and in different contexts, so this tool cannot realize exactly Context is crucial for the accuracy of the translation because many languages include terms with multiple meanings Without considering context, a translation robot translates words mechanically and directly, which frequently gives awkward, literal translations A human translator evaluates the whole context in addition to translating to give the translation meaning For instance, the term "record" can refer to both recording something and keeping a record of it (such as a historical record) Based on their knowledge of the discussion, a professional translator can evaluate the context and choose the appropriate word for translation rather than using GT, which is able to translate word for word but won't be able to account for context.

Figure 3.2 The deficiency students most encountered when using Google

The above chart illustrates the issues students most faced when using GT on English-Vietnamese translation process of BE students intake 61

In general, the number of students having an acknowledgment of the most deficiency they encountered when using GT have different selections from the survey and the most unhelpful of GT is lengthy and awkward expression’s products, while wrong gender and inappropriate rarely causes problems As a result of the survey, nearly half of students stated GT translation results are lacking naturalness Nida, a famous figure in translation studies, put more of an emphasis on naturalness in translation "The purpose of dynamic equivalence" is explained as "finding the closest natural equivalent to the source-language message" by Nida (1964), as cited in Munday (2008) (p.42) He says that grammatical, lexical, and cultural flexibility are all part of what he means by "naturalness." According to him, the idea is similar to dynamic equivalence Nida believes that general communicative effectiveness, understanding of intent, and response equivalence are important factors in determining the best possible translation For him, a successful translation is one that influences people and generates an emotional reaction Google Translate frequently produces poor meaning, but in some cases,

Tran Thị Dung — 11191180 - Business English 61C students can still understand the main points of the text despite this.

A great number of students believe that the level of accuracy of GT is extremely low, which makes up 42% As a result, this is the third deficiency students are dissatisfied with GT The highest importance is accuracy, and GT cannot compromise on that The accuracy of a translation might be affected by several small mistakes Vocabulary may be quite helpful in supplying the meanings and synonyms of words However, GT can encounter errors in word choice and collocation, slang words, terminologies, idioms, when considering the whole context of the provided texts Even within the same language, there are differences in how terms are used locally or regionally Qualified, professional translators are familiar with the colloquial, regional, and distinctive slang that is commonly used in official, consultative, and informal styles of communication in a variety of circumstances, so GT sometimes don’t give good results.

Inconsistency and too formal and casual accounts the same proportions with more than 20% Your translation should be coherent and represent the idea you wish to convey For instance, assuming we're talking about translation for commercial purposes, it's crucial that the language, tone, and style remain consistent throughout the whole content Your content impacts how current and future consumers see your business It's crucial that it be of the highest quality in each language you aim at GT might cause a poorly worded or inaccurate (incorrect) translation, so it is necessary a second check when using it on the translation process

Figure 3.3 Students’ satisfaction about Google Translate

From the general evaluating results of translation, 56% of all people who participate in the survey have neutral attitudes towards using Google Translate on the process of English - Vietnamese translation It is not surprising that almost students choose this because GT has enormous impacts on students, especially English major students.

BE Students’ strategies to deal with issues when using GT for translation to get better results.

The researcher offers some recommendations for using GT and strategies for avoiding overusing them in the translation process According to the survey's findings, the researcher has selected, summarized, and recommended some of the following detailed recommendations.

First off, it is obvious that GT has had a significant impact on the translation industry thanks to a number of benefits Nevertheless, It must be noted that the many advantages this technology offers students, they cannot replace human translators Consequently, in order to complete tasks or resolve challenging translation-related problems, students should abstain from using internet translation tools excessively Although it is true that online translation tools may occasionally provide users an interesting translation method, it is important to remember that GT only intended to be used sometimes and to avoid abusing them to the level where they become passive and lazy.

Secondly, Students may input their sentences into GT and then see whether they were accurate or wrong This approach felt more efficient since occasionally the

GT translation result was insufficient Students might compare their translation result with a GT result by using GT only for checking Students will understand that GT cannot be completely convincing in this situation and are indirectly learning new information In this situation, English was the target language. Because there are still problems with GT, such as grammatical errors or poor word choice, It is actually recommended that students not depend solely or excessively on the tools BE students must re-edit and modify the phrases as well as note new words in order to complete their translation process They cannot simply copy the entire texts into GT Users' translation abilities will keep the same if they copy the entire translated texts into the app without reviewing or revising them. Furthermore, Ella and Eca shared a similar declaration with Rian, Mira, and Eric.

Tran Thị Dung — 11191180 - Business English 61C

"Whether we want to achieve a good result after using GT, we have to double- check the grammar and vocabulary choice since GT is a machine, so it could not know if there is an expression, with strong feeling," explained Rian Given that

GT is a machine, it is impossible for it to understand the writer's desired feelings.

As a consequence, human interaction and the function of translators remain crucial to effective translation The researcher realized students should use GT as a checker tool In addition to using application GT, students should continue practicing translation from English to Vietnamese and vice versa on a regular basis to advance their skills.

Bin Dahmash (2019), using previous research, found that students used GT to check the word throughout their writing activity The seven participants in his study who participated in focus groups, semi-structured interviews, observations, informal interviews, and an online log stated that they used GT in two ways: evaluating the source language and checking the target language This activity was comparable to the participant's study proposal, and employing GT to help the writing activity may be one of the more successful ways.

Another recommendation for BE's students is that they should combine adding a new word system with using GT and take advantage of diverse types of dictionaries to compare and find the most suitable dictionary with their writing style Moreover, when using many dictionaries, students can learn more about academic words and sentences so as to apply their translation.
