III READING

Part 1 Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Do you feel like your teenager is spending most of the day glued to a phone screen? You're not too faroff A new survey from the Pew Research Center reveals the surprising ways that technology intersects withteen friendships – and the results show that 57 percent of teens have made at least one new friend online.

Even more surprisingly, only 20 percent of those digital friends ever meet in person.

While teens do connect with their friends face-to-face outside of school, they spend 55 percent of their daytexting with friends, and only a quarter of them are spending actual time with their friends on a daily basis(outside of school hallways) These new forms of communication are key in maintaining friendships day-to-day (27 percent of teens instant message their friends every day, 23 percent connect through social mediaevery day, and 7 percent even video chat daily) Text messaging remains the main form of communication -almost half of survey respondents say it's their chosen method of communication with their closest friend While girls are more likely to text with their close friends, boys are meeting new friends (and maintainingfriendships) in the gaming world – 89 percent play with friends they know, and 54 percent play with online-only friends Whether they're close with their teammates or not, online gamers say that playing makes themfeel "more connected" to friends they know, or gamers they've never met.

When making new friends, social media has also become a major part of the teenage identity – 62 percent

of teens are quick to share their social media usernames when connecting with a new friend (although 80

percent still consider their phone number the best method of contact) Despite the negative consequences-21

Trang 5

percent of teenage users feel worse about their lives because of posts they see on social media – teens alsohave found support and connection through various platforms In fact, 68 percent of teens received supportduring a challenging time in their lives via social media platforms.

Just as technology has become a gateway for new friendships, or a channel to stay connected withcurrent friends, it can also make a friendship breakup more public The study reveals that girls are more

likely to block or unfriend former allies, and 68 percent of all teenage users report experiencing "drama

among their friends on social media."

Part 2 Read the passage and do the task that follows.

Is humanity running out of space or will we find new frontier?

Section B: (59) _

The impact of unfettered population growth is clear for all to see Urbanization is now a more evidentworldwide phenomenon than previously as even greater numbers of people drift from rural areas to vastcities all over the world like Tokyo, Mexico City and Mumbai (26.4 million, 18.4 million and 18.1 millioninhabitants in 2000 respectively) in their quest for a better life These mega-cities, i.e conurbations with anestimated population of more than 10 million people, are springing up in every continent Now teeming withhumanity, they are hungry for one increasingly valuable resource: land.

While developments in agricultural technology ensure humanity may be able, by and large, to feed thepeople flocking to these great metropolises, the expansion of the human race is fuelling an unprecedentedappetite for real estate Space, whether it be for personal or public use, corporate or national, human or flora/fauna, is now at a premium as we move into a new century Not only is more land required foraccommodation, but also for a wide range of infrastructure facilities Transport systems including roads

Trang 6

within and between cities need to be constructed or upgraded to create motorways; green fields are turnedinto airports; virgin forest is stripped to provide food and firewood In poorer regions, this newly exposedland becomes desert, completing the cycle of destruction.

Section C: (60) _

Hitherto, the most common practice for the utilization of expansive space for living and working has beento build upwards; hence, the demand for ever higher buildings, both apartment and commercial, in majorcities like New York, Shanghai and Singapore all vying with each other for the tallest buildings There hasalso been a tradition for building underground, not just for transport systems, but for the storage of wastedepositories for books etc as in London, where The British Library housing millions of books has been builtlargely underground.

Recent years have seen more novel construction developments around the world In the past, in manycountries, Holland and the UK included, marshes and flood plains have been reclaimed from the sea Likethe city of Venice in Italy, housing complexes and even airports have now been constructed off-shore toamazing effect In Japan, Kansai International Airport has been built off-shore on a man-made island at vastexpense and in Dubai a very imaginative and expensive housing complex in a shape of palm tree is beingbuilt just off the coast on land created by a construction company However, these and other developmentsare at risk from rising sea level as a consequence of global warming.

Section D: (61) _

But where will the human race go when planet earth is full? There have been many theories put forwardabout the human population moving to outer space Marshall Savage (1942, 1994), for example, hasprojected that the human population will reach five quintillion throughout the solar system by the year 3000,with the majority living in the asteroid belt Athur C Clarke, a fervent supporter of Savage, now argues thatby the year 2057 there will be humans on the Moon, Mars, Europa, Ganymede, Titan and in orbit aroundVenus, Neptune and Pluto Feeman Dyson (1999) favours the Kuiper belts as the future home of humanity, suggesting this could happen within a few centuries.

Section E: (62) _

Habitation in outer space in huge stations is no longer just a dream, but a reality A permanentinternational space station now orbits the earth The first commercial tourist recently went into outer spacewith more trips planned for the near future This is only a beginning, but the development of space hotels isnot far-off There is no knowing where mankind may end up But the ideas about off-world habitation arenot fanciful and I am sure I am not alone in fantasizing about summer holidays spent watching the moonsrising in some far-flung planet or on a floating hotel somewhere on the Andromeda nebula.

Question 58 – 62:

Choose the correct heading for sections A – E from the list of heading below.Write the correct number, i – vii, in boxes 58 – 62 on your answer sheet.

64 The building of the airport in Japan cost much more than that of the housing complex in Dubai.65 The concept of the habitation of outer space by mankind is unimaginable.
