WELCOME TO THE HOME OF THE FUTURE

The 2009 British Homes Awards challenged the industry to design a house that can adapt to different life stages.

The participants were asked to rethink the construction and design of individual homes, so that they were easily adaptable to less mobile inhabitants, and also to create communities in which ageing occupants could continue to enjoy shared amenities.

The top design also had to be attractive to its potential buyers, (1) the competition was put to the public vote.

The winner, gaining 12,000 votes from Mail (2) Sunday readers, was the strikingly modern Sunny Side Up, designed by Kosi Architects Here are its three main features:

The architects took as a starting point the accepted norm for a house – rows of houses facing onto streets crammed with cars, with living rooms on the ground floor and bedrooms above Then they scrapped (3)

To optimize energy efficiency and capture natural light, the living, dining, and kitchen areas are situated on the top floor Conversely, the bedrooms are placed on the ground floor, providing increased privacy from the garden and maintaining a cooler temperature The two floors are conveniently connected by spacious, gently sloped stairs, designed to accommodate a stair lift if desired in the future, ensuring accessibility for aging owners.

But the feature that, according to Warren Rosing, one of the Kosi architects responsible for the design, was particularly popular (5) the public, is actually the parking.

In a Sunny Side Up development no one (6) to look out onto a street full of cars, or worry about their kids being run over, because the terrace zone at the first floor level links all the homes and is a car-free zone.

Vehicles are tucked away on the lower floor, leaving safe and pleasant spaces outside the houses for people to meet, and kids to play.

A lift takes people directly from garage to living area, so that (7) residents, including the elderly and those with heavy shopping, can move comfortably between the floors The natural feel of the front area is enhanced by the planters that are placed outside the kitchens at the front to encourage residents to grow vegetables and flowers where they can be seen.

The idea is that not only would they look pretty, but they would be a talking point, encouraging interaction between residents on the terrace area outside.

But it’s the fact that the space is (8) to adapt to the changing needs, including the fluctuating income of its owners, that makes it a thought- provoking, as well as a winning, design.

The lower-floor bedrooms have separate outdoor access so they can be easily let The idea is that owners can get some extra money to pay for their mortgages (9) the first years And later in the future, those bedrooms can be used as a granny flat, or an office, and can easily be converted into a separate one-bed flat if your kids won’t leave home.

And if more space is required, as well as the usual loft that can be converted, there is potential for a gallery floor to be inserted in the living room.

4 Where can you get one?

At the moment the Sunny Side Up house is still just a set of drawings But Warren Rosing says, “We are hoping to have it built.”

Despite ongoing discussions with builders, construction progress may be delayed due to economic constraints The organizers remain optimistic, expressing confidence that the wait will ultimately prove worthwhile.

Just off the north coast of continental Europe, there is an island called Great Britain. Today, this island is closely connected to the rest of Europe; there are direct trains to Paris and Brussels, and thousands of people, cars and lorries cross the Channel and the North Sea every day between British and continental ports.

Britain is very much a part of Europe; we are Europeans, and British history and culture are part of European history and culture In 1973, after years of discussion, Britain joined the European Union However many of the people in Britain have never liked being in the E.U.; they imagine that Britain is very different from other countries Some believe that Britain is better than other countries.

In 2016, the people of Britain (or more exactly, just over half of Britain's voters) voted for "Brexit" So in January 2020, Britain left the European Union Why?

"We're different, aren't we?" says Eddie, from London "We do things differently.

We don't want to become like other countries."

Millions of people think the same as Eddie For example, a large majority did not want Britain to join the Euro They imagine that Britain's "identity" will be lost, if we say goodbye to our pounds and our pennies They forget that things are also very different from one European country to another It's quite a strange situation really; but it is a situation that can easily be explained.

"Insularity" is a deep and historic part of British culture and society Great Britain's borders have been fixed by nature for thousands of years If you walk in a straight line for long enough in any direction, you will know when you have reached the edge of Great Britain; you will find yourself in salty water!

Due to the physical isolation of Great Britain as an island nation, international travel necessitates modes of transportation such as ships, planes, trains, or cars The lack of direct road or pedestrian access to other countries reinforces the perception among British individuals that foreign cultures are significantly distinct from their own.

Of course, lots of things about Britain are different from the rest of Europe We drive on the left, we like our pubs, we have sports like cricket, we have our own popular

TV programmes, we use pounds and pennies and miles, we drink tea with milk in it, we don't carry identity cards, and our policemen don't normally carry guns So yes, Britain is different, in these respects, from France or Germany or Spain, or Japan, or even the USA.

Nevertheless, Britain's "difference" is disappearing fast! Fifty years ago, British people drove British cars; today the cars in Britain are British, French, German, Italian, Japanese and more Today we buy petrol in litres (not gallons) and fruit in kilos (not pounds) Fifty years ago, our favourite foods were fish 'n' chips and

"bangers and mash" Among today's young people, the most popular foods and drinks are Italian pasta and pizza, Indian curry, American hamburgers and colas, Chinese take-aways, Continental beers and Mexican tacos.

As far as culture is concerned, young Britons love their Britpop bands; but they also like American and Australian TV series, American films, and Japanese and British video games In fact, they like more or less the same things as young people all over Europe and North America!

The real problem is perhaps not that we are very different It's just that lots of people (in and out of Britain) imagine that Britain is different because "Continentals" speak other languages, and old ideas take a very long time to die.

1 What is the name of the island off the north coast of continental Europe?

2 How has transportation evolved in connecting Great Britain with other countries?

3 When did Britain join the European Union?

4 How many British people voted to leave Brexit?

5 Why do some people in Britain imagine that Britain is different from other countries?

6 What is the concept of "insularity" in British culture?

7 What geographical feature sets the British apart from the rest of the world?

8 What are the unique characteristics of British cuisine?

9 How has the perception of British differences changed with globalization?

10 What is the main problem discussed in the passage regarding perceptions of Britain's difference?

Explanation: the first sentence of the paragraph.

2 Answer: There are direct trains to Paris and Brussels, and people, cars, and lorries cross the Channel and the North Sea between British and continental ports.

Explanation: the second sentence of the first paragraph.

3 When did Britain join the European Union?

4 How many British people voted to leave Brexit?

Answer: Just over half of Britain's voters voted for "Brexit"

Explanation: The second passage mentions that in 2016, just over half of Britain's voters voted for "Brexit," leading to Britain's departure from the European Union in January 2020.

5 Why do some people in Britain imagine that Britain is different from other countries?

Answer: Some people in Britain believe that Britain is different because they do things differently and they do not want to become like other countries.

Explanation: The passage includes a quote from Eddie, representing the opinion of some people in Britain who feel that Britain is different and do not want to become like other countries.

6 What is the concept of "insularity" in British culture?

Insularity, a defining characteristic of British culture, is deeply rooted in the country's geographic isolation For millennia, Great Britain's borders have been naturally defined, fostering a sense of separation and uniqueness among its people This insular nature has shaped the British psyche, influencing their outlook, values, and social behavior.

7 What geographical feature sets the British apart from the rest of the world? Answer: Great Britain is physically separated from every other country.

Explanation: The 6th paragraph that “Great Britain is physically separated from every other country; and this is the main reason why British people imagine that other countries are so "different".”

8 What are the unique characteristics of British cuisine?

Answer: Drink tea with milk in it.

Explanation: The 7th passage provides a list of examples of things that are different in Britain compared to other European countries.

9 How has the perception of British differences changed with globalization? Answer: Britain's "difference" is disappearing fast.

Explanation: The first sentence of the 8th paragraph.

10 What is the main problem discussed in the passage regarding perceptions of Britain's differences?

Answer: Languages ("Continentals" speak other languages)

Explanation: The last paragraph points out that the British difference is due to some people seeing that they speak a different language to the rest of the world: “It's just that lots of people (in and out of Britain) imagine that Britain is different because

Line 4 of paragraph 4: “The final hundred metres that led to the wall were called Death Strip”

There are still some people who say that climate change is not real! Others say that it is real, but we cannot do anything to stop it, so we need not try A few people even say that climate change is not caused by human beings But most people now understand that our world is getting hotter, and we have to do something about it We only have one Earth, and we can't get another one.

Twenty years ago, people could perhaps imagine that climate change was not a real problem, because some scientists still had doubts Today almost all the world's scientists agree: the world is getting hotter, and it is the fault of human beings Our planet is going towards a climate catastrophe, but we can stop its worst effects Indeed we must do everything possible to stop them.

In November 2021, world leaders convened at the COP26 summit in Glasgow, Scotland, to address climate change concerns They pledged to mitigate global warming, with many countries committing to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050 Further, the summit emphasized the need to transition away from fossil fuels like coal and oil for energy generation, promoting the adoption of renewable energy sources known as "green energy."

Before the year 2100, all the energy that we use may perhaps come from renewable sources; the sun, the sea, the wind and rivers can produce more than enough energy for everyone on our planet, but we still have a long way to go.

The green energy revolution has already begun, but the challenges are still enormous "Going green" will cost an enormous amount of money, and use some kinds of technology that do not yet exist Also there are some people who believe that it will be too expensive.

Although most people care about our planet and know that we have to act now to avoid a climate catastrophe, there are other people who have different priorities There are people who just don't care, and there are people who care more about themselves than about the world around them There are people and big companies that just want to make money, and are not interested in anything that gets in their way Most importantly, there are politicians who are frightened of doing anything that other people will not like; they make promises, but they do not keep them.

At COP26, people agreed that we will have to stop using coal as soon as possible, because it is the dirtiest of fuels Yet for some countries this will be very difficult Most of their electricity is generated by burning coal, so if they stop using coal, people will not have enough electricity In developed countries, everyone uses electricity, and industry uses lots of electricity No countries can stop using coal unless they have another source of electricity to use instead.

The cleanest electricity comes from the wind and the sun, but it takes time to build enough solar power plants and wind turbines for a whole country Then there is another big problem; we cannot depend on solar power and the wind, because the sun does not shine at night, and the wind does not blow all the time These kinds of green power are not reliable, so we need other ideas too.

Climate change is mostly caused by CO2 and other gases in the air Many countries are now producing less CO2 and less air pollution than they used to Cars are cleaner, heating is cleaner, more things are being recycled The problem lies in poorer countries which cannot afford the new technology, and do not have the systems in place; it also lies in countries like China or Poland or Greece, where coal is still a vital source of energy, of jobs or of exports.

Some people believe that we cannot afford to fight climate change because it will cost too much The truth is that we cannot afford not to fight against climate change, because the cost of a climate catastrophe will be even higher.

The world is getting hotter due to human activity, and most scientists agree it's a serious problem While some believe it's unstoppable or not caused by humans, many countries are working together to reduce emissions and transition to renewable energy sources like wind and solar power This green revolution is expensive and requires new technology, but the cost of inaction is even greater Poorer countries and those reliant on coal face challenges, but the fight against climate change is necessary to avoid catastrophe.

To fulfill the teacher's request about completing the group exercise of English the members, on the basis of working together in the past, gathered into a group Through the previous projects, we saw that we got on pretty well and shared the same hobby of reading English documents and novels Besides, in spite of having different strengths and weak points, all members in the group have the same level of ability to use and understand English For that reason, we thought that it would be great if we work together on this project to help each other develop our own strengths and improve our weaknesses.

2 Reasons for choosing the topics.

In our opinion, both “Environment” and “Places and buildings” are familiar topics to most of people so finding articles and designing questions for them wouldn’t be too difficult for us to do In addition, in the temporary world,

“environment” is one of the most significant issues globally and we believe that people need to raise their awareness about it “Places and buildings”, meanwhile, is the topic which is interesting to young people, especially university students so it will be suitable for the reading tasks.

Under the guidance of the team leader, we embarked on a project involving two topics: "Environment" and "Places and Buildings." Our team collaborated effectively over a two-month period, diligently completing a range of deliverables: five articles with accompanying questions and answers, five meeting minutes, a comprehensive work schedule, and a detailed project report.

Reasons for grouping

To fulfill the instructor's request, our group, based on prior successful collaborations, reconvened Our shared passion for English literature and comparable proficiency levels made us an ideal team Despite individual strengths and weaknesses, we collectively recognized the opportunity to leverage our differences to enhance each member's abilities and address areas for improvement.

Reasons for choosing the topics

In our opinion, both “Environment” and “Places and buildings” are familiar topics to most of people so finding articles and designing questions for them wouldn’t be too difficult for us to do In addition, in the temporary world,

“environment” is one of the most significant issues globally and we believe that people need to raise their awareness about it “Places and buildings”, meanwhile, is the topic which is interesting to young people, especially university students so it will be suitable for the reading tasks.

Outcome

Under the team leader's guidance, team members were assigned specific tasks due on specific deadlines These tasks centered around two topics: "Environment" and "Places and Buildings." Over the course of approximately two months, the team diligently worked to complete the entire project, culminating in the production of five articles accompanied by corresponding questions and answers, five meeting minutes, a comprehensive work schedule, and a detailed work report.

Efficiency

After the working together for 2 months, we think our group had an effective working process All the members tried to attend the meetings fully and on time, raise the ideas and analyze them well in the meeting We also do not repeat the mistakes that we have corrected before for each other Besides, all the members complete their tasks on time with pretty good quality The team has a sense of contribution and willing to finish the project in the best way.

On the other hands, there are still some problems that we need to improve such as small mistakes in grammar and in the way we design questions For that reason, we think that our efficiency in this project will be about 90%-95%.

Achievement

The group finished the project on time, achieved the set goals and all the members did a great job in contributing to the tasks After the process of working together, we have improved our skills of reading, designing tasks and solving problems and conflicts Each member learned how to listen to and support other teammates to get the best result.
