The name "Australia" comes from the Latin word "australia" meaning
"south" Legends of "an unknown land to the South" date back to Roman times and were a common name in medieval geography but are not based on any written knowledge of the continent In 1521, the Spanish were among the first Europeans to reach the Pacific The first use of the word "Australia" is in 1625 - in the words "Notes on Australia del Espiritu Santo, written by Master Hakluyt"

AUSTRALIA'S LAND AREA
7,617,930 square kilometers (2,941,300 sq mi).Located on the Indo-Australian
Plate, surrounded by the Indian Ocean (west and south) and the Pacific
Ocean (east),[N 3] separated from Asia through the Arafura and Timor seas,
the Coral Sea lies off the coast of Queensland, and the Tasman Sea between
Australia and New Zealand Australia is the world's smallest continent[80]
but the 6th largest country in total area,[81] due to its large size and
isolation, Australia is also labeled an "island continent", and sometimes
considered the largest island in the world
Trang 4Australia's large size gives it a variety of landscapes, with tropical rainforests in the north-east, mountain ranges in the south-east, south-west and east, and dry deserts in the centre Australia is the flattest continent, with the oldest and least fertile landmass;[ desert or semi-arid lands often called
"outbacks" form the common landscape most Australia is the driest settled continent, with only the south-east and south-west corners having a temperate climate Australia's population density is 2.8 people/km², one of the lowest in the world, but a large portion of the population lives along the temperate south-east coast
Australia's climate is significantly influenced by ocean currents, including the Indian Ocean Dipole and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, which are correlated with cyclical droughts, and seasonal tropical low pressure systems are the cause factor that produces condensation vortices in northern Australia. These factors cause rainfall to vary significantly between years Much of the northern part of the country has a tropical, predominantly summer-rainy (monsoon) climate.[The southwest corner of the country has a Mediterranean climate.Much of the southeast (including Tasmania) has a temperate climate

Although most of its territory is semi-arid or desert, Australia contains diverse habitats from alpine moors to tropical rainforests, and is recognized as a highly biodiverse country Fungi typify this diversity; The total number of fungal species occurring in Australia, including those yet to be discovered, is estimated to be about 250,000, of which about 5% have been described.[116] Because of its age as a continent, its extremely variable weather patterns, and its long geographic isolation,
much of Australia's biota is distinct and diverse
Approximately 85% of flowering plant species, 84% of mammal species, over 45% of bird species, and 89% of coastal and temperate fish species are endemic.[117] Australia is the country with the largest number of reptile species in the
world, with 755 species
