PERIOD 74: UNIT 9: CITIES OF THE WORLD LESSON 5: SKILLS I Objectives: Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - Read for general and specific information about a city - Identify different features of a place - Talk about a city which Ss know Competences: - Develop reading skill by scanning and skimming the text - Use what they have learnt to talk about a city Character qualities: - Be interested in cities in the world - Be positive about discovering cities of the world II TEACHING AIDS: Textbook, laptop, TV, a postcard III PROCEDURE: Warm up Aim: + to help Ss revise exclamations with What + to activate Ss’ knowledge about the topic in the text + to motivate Ss to read to get information about the topic in the text - Ss are divided into teams - T asks members of each team to take turns to run to the board to write down exclamations with What that are used to express surprise or appreciation of a city - T writes down an example on the board: What a beautiful city! - T sets a time limit - The team that finishes first and gets the most correct answers will be the winner - T asks Ss to look at all the sentences Ss have written on the board and find out the similarity between them - Ss will recognise and answer: All of them are about city - Now, T has a lead-in to the new lesson and introduces the topic of the text: “Today, the topic of the text is about a city in the world.” Pre-stage Aim: + to teach Ss some lexical items about cities and features of a place + to help Ss brainstorm and see if they have any idea about postcards a Vocabulary + fantastic /fænˈtæs.tɪk/ (adj) = wonderful : tuyệt vời + rent /rent/ (v): to pay or receive a fixed amount of money for the use of a room, house, car, television, etc…: thuê + amazing /əˈmeɪ.zɪŋ/ = surprising (adj): làm kinh ngạc, làm sửng sốt - T uses different techniques for teaching vocabulary + fantastic: T uses synonym technique + rent: T uses translation technique + amazing: T uses synonym technique - T uses Rub out and remember technique to check Ss’ vocabulary memorization b Pre-questions: Act 1/ pg 32: Look at the postcard and discuss - Ss work in groups - T asks Ss to discuss when people write a postcard and what is written on a postcard - T accepts reasonable answers Key: When they are away from home, often on holiday or business They want to tell their family or friends what they see and do, and how they feel about their experience there The sender often writes about his / her stay in a city or country - T draws Ss’ attention into the during stage: “Now you are going to read about a city which is written on a postcard.” During stage Aim: + to help Ss develop their reading skill for general and specific information (multiple-choice) + to help Ss identify different features of a place a Act.2/ pg 32: Read the postcard and answer the questions - T asks Ss to look at the questions first and underline the key words in the questions - T tell Ss that these key words will help them find the information more easily in the text - Then T asks Ss to read the postcard and answer the questions individually before discussing in the class - T calls on some Ss to read their answers and encourages Ss to justify their answers - Check Ss' answers in the class Key: 1.B 2.A 3.B 4.C b Act.3/ pg 32: Read the text and match the places with the things they have - T asks Ss to read the text again and the matching - Check Ss' answers in the class Key: b,c a, d, e Post stage Aim: + to help Ss use what they have learnt so far to talk about a city + to help Ss summarise the information they have to organise a short presentation a Act.4/ pg 32: Work in groups Choose a city you know Discuss and answer the questions below - Ss work in groups - T allows each group some time to choose one city they have learnt about in this unit, or the one they all know / like - T asks Ss to discuss and make notes of the information they want to share with their class - T asks them to refer to the questions in this activity as suggestions for their notes or they can it their own way - T goes around and offers help if necessary b Act.5/ pg 32: Share the information you have collected in with your class - T asks Ss to use the notes in to share the information of their city with the class - T needs to make sure they speak in full sentences - T allows Ss to vote for the most interesting and informative presentation Homework - Learn by heart all the new words - Prepare for the next lesson: Unit 9: Skills - Do Exercise in Workbook (Unit 9) Feedback: ……………………………………………………………………………………………… ……………………………………………………………………………………………… -o0o -
