for a degree or diploma in any university To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made in the thesis itself Date: 02 / 07 / 2015 Signature Đoàn Thị An Hiên iii ABSTRACT YouTube is reported to be the largest video-sharing website which offers the user a chance to upload, share and view videos easily The main purpose of the study is to investigate the potentials and pitfalls of using YouTube videos as a learning tool to improve listening comprehension for EFL university students in Vietnam The methodological framework of the study is based on a pretest-posttest experimental design with a control group, quantitative methods consisting of independent samples t-tests, likert scale and qualitative research techniques including interviews, analysis of survey responses A total of 100 sophomore students in English major in Ho Chi Minh University of Pedagogy and Qui Nhon University involved the study In each university, 50 students were divided into two groups (N= 25 in experimental, and N=25 in control) participated the pretests and posttests Additionally, EFL lecturers and students involved in the interview process The results indicated that there was an unnoticeable difference between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups in the pretest; however, there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups in the post test in favor of the experimental group Ultimately, both quantitative and qualitative findings advocate that YouTube videos with authentic contents in English can promote not only listening competence but also learners‟ motivations and autonomy Keywords: authentic, technology, listening, videos, YouTube iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The completion of this undertaking could not have been possible without the participation and assistance of so many people whose names may not all be enumerated Did you have any frustrations or feelings of satisfaction? (at least 80 words) It was quite hard to hear all words without the CC But when turning the CC on, I realize that some words might not be right If for the 1st time of listening, it was difficult to gather all information needed, later time I found it easier and easier For the vocabularies, almost all of them I know, but I still couldn‟t realize exactly what are they without the CC, so I believe there are many new words About the content of the video, it‟s good and selective The accents are very nice, attractive and easily caught, to me List at least 10 key vocabulary items/phrases from the video that were NEW to you and their definitions according to your own understanding ( preferred) or dictionaries  Rednecked class (n): native American people  Perspective (n): point of view  Cheering uniform (n) customs worn by cheering girls  Engage (v) take part  Tie-break (n) extra play to decide the winner  Mindset (n) what people thought about something based on their prior knowledge/ preconception Intimidated (a) frightened  Shape the future: orientate  Bring to the table: Someone who has qualities which represents something out of the normal  Stick with it: continue to it 73 REPORT #2 Student‟s name: Dương Vũ Tùng Name of the video #2: New York City Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia YouTube URL Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtCMtC50gwY Describe it (at least 100 words) Situated in the north east region of the us, New York is the home of over millions people with more than 50 millions visitors every year New york has been built by the dreams of the immigrants from all over the world, which gives the city sounds, tastes and textures like no other Every corner of the city is familiar due to the great influences of it to the World You can explode New york in whichever way you want Take on a journey through the city and witness the Empire State Building, the endeering symbol of the Big Apple since 1931; The Rockefeller Center, a place for creativity and inspiration You can also take a walk through The Metropolitan Meseum of art to enjoy some of the greatest artworks ever created No New York sightseeing should be complete without a visit to Time Square, the crossroads of the world If you are a shopaholic, the city is also heaven for you If you want a chill-out space for relaxation and romance, there is nothing more suitable than the Central Park Don't forget to spend a moment keeping your head down at the Relfecting Absence memorial which honors the unforgettable event in September 2001 One can say New York is the world in miniature thanks to its diversity in Culture Get ready to take a bite out of the Big Apple The city has all it takes to be your destination Report what you thought or how you felt about it Was it easy for you to do? Did you have any frustrations or feelings of satisfaction? (at least 80 words) The narration is very clear, so It wasn‟t too difficult for me to collect the information from the video However, there were too much information to gather and putting the collected into an order is a little beyond me I think most of the problems I had to encounter were because of the length of the video I had to leave some of the details behind and only kept the main statements The test did improve my reducing skill a lot List at least 10 key vocabulary items/phrases from the video that were NEW to you and their definitions according to your own understanding ( preferred) or dictionaries  Radiate: spread  Grid system: Hệ thống đường xá  When the going got tough, the tough got going: People will work harder to solve the problem when it gets harder  Look skyward: look up to the sky  Snap up: To grab something quickly  Resonate: to feel shared with something/ somebody  Epitomize: to sum up, to be a typical or perfect example of something  Visionary: imaginary, dreamy 74 REPORT #3 Student‟s name: Ninh Gia Hòa Name of the video #3: Young explorers: a brief history of writing YouTube URL Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7nM3YOwu00 Describe it (at least 100 words) We don‟t usually question the origin and development of writing, although it‟s also an invention In the past, people at first needed writing as a tool to aid memory, as we still today Cuneiform was the earliest type of writing found on clay tablets in the Middle East five thousand years ago Ancient leaders used those tablets to keep track of dealings and stock storage Among the most famous types of ancient writing is Egyptian hieroglyphs, using signs to visualize the sounds The presenter took us to Paul, a “modern-day scribe” to see how this type of writing is done with papyrus paper and tools such as reeds, quills, etc by holding the tool vertically and gently Then the speaker showed us some stone seals, of which the messages could not be deciphered because the types of writing they used have become forgotten Nowadays, the language that the Islamic holy book- Quran was written in, Arabic is still in use This script can be used for decorative purposes, as can be seen on objects or in religious building Chinese is hailed as the “oldest type of writing in use today” Writing enables us to record ideas, information and feelings without the onerous physical attempts to communicate them directly Report what you thought or how you felt about it Was it easy for you to do? Did you have any frustrations or feelings of satisfaction? (at least 80 words) Admittedly, the British accent in this video caused me some difficulties with certain groups of words but by and large the whole speech was very clearly pronounced and relatively easily followed Thanks to this video, I had chance to learn about lots of interesting types of script today! I don‟t like British accent just because it‟s considered to be standard, but because it‟s beautiful and unique, so I love listening to it, although American accent is much easier to come across List at least 10 key vocabulary items/phrases from the video that were NEW to you and their definitions according to your own understanding ( preferred) or dictionaries       Cuneiform (n): an ancient system of writing Ration (n): an amount of sth that somebody is allowed to receive Hieroglyphs (n): symbols representing words or sounds Scribe (n): a person whose job is to make copy of written materials Reed (n): a type of plant like grass with hollow stems Quill (n): a pen made from a feather 75 APPENDIX V List of useful YouTube channels: NEWS (VERIFIED)  ABC News: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBi2mrWuNuyYy4gbM6fU18Q  BBC: https://www.youtube.com/user/BBC  BBC News: https://www.youtube.com/user/bbcnews  DW (English): https://www.youtube.com/user/deutschewelleenglish  VICE News: https://www.youtube.com/user/vicenews  CNN: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCupvZG-5ko_eiXAupbDfxWw  NBC: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCccjdJEay2hpb5scz61zY6Q  RT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpwvZwUam-URkxB7g4USKpg  Sky News: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoMdktPbSTixAyNGwbUYkQ  The Guardian: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHpw8xwDNhU9gdohEcJu4aA  The New York Times: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqnbDFdCpuN8CMEg0VuEBqA  TomoNews US: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtWqkTyKK1_70U4bb4k4lQ  Wall Street Journal: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK7tptUDHhRYDsdxO1-5QQ  USA TODAY: https://www.youtube.com/user/USATODAY  Fox News: https://www.youtube.com/user/FoxNewsChannel  Washington Post: https://www.youtube.com/user/WashingtonPost  Financial Times: https://www.youtube.com/user/FinancialTimesVideos/featured 76 ENGLISH LEARNING  bbclearningenglish: https://www.youtube.com/user/bbclearningenglish  Sozo Exchange: https://www.youtube.com/user/sozoexchange  Learn English with Steve Ford: https://www.youtube.com/user/PrivateEnglishPortal  Speak English With Misterduncan: https://www.youtube.com/user/duncaninchina  SERLYMAR: https://www.youtube.com/user/SERLYMAR  A.J Hoge: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfYYi6aJNg70mFYnbBKcMQw  EffortlessEnglishTV: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfgaTyiJucYDX_OibYtmLg  engVid (related): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_0NfufarVw04vDfWFm8z_Q  Learn English with Emma [engVid]: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVBErcpqaokOf4fI5j73K_w  ieltssimon: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuIPd024-DOo9LzNl_PiOQ  Learn English with EnglishClass101.com: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeTVoczn9NOZA9blls3YgUg  Learn English with Valen -
