identify methods to translate noun phrases in weather forecast from English into Vietnamese and analyze the difference in word order between English noun phrases and Vietnamese counterpoints Furthermore, different translations of strategies proposed by scholars are considered, to lay the foundation for the translation of noun phrases in the weather forecast Above all, it gives thoughtful recommendations for the effective translation of noun phrases in weather forecast from English into Vietnamese Findings from the study can contribute to research in the field of compiling and Part 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1.Rationale for the study Today, we cannot deny the important role of translation in work, study or the daily life Especially when the current trend is globalization, Vietnam is opening its doors to attract investment capital as well as economic, cultural and political cooperation and trade with world powers Translation includes the study of vocabulary, grammatical structures, communication situations, and the cultural context of the source language text; analyze it to determine its meaning; and then reconstruct this same meaning using vocabulary and grammatical structures appropriate to its perceptual language and cultural context It is a well-known fact that an increasing number large of people all over the world are drawing attention to the weather Human beings make effort to predict the weather informally for millennia and formally since at least the nineteenth century So, the weather forecast is an integral part of the daily living because it provides knowledge and information of future weather conditions The weather forecast supports us to cope with the unusual kinds of climate to maintain the socio-economic innovation Furthermore, there is no doubt that a large number of weather documents are written in English Therefore, understading and knowing English weather documents is necessary in our daily life Translators often get trouble in conveying the exact meaning of words related to weather phenomena during the process of translating noun phrases from English into Vietnamese When dealing with them, the author feels confused and faces many difficulties Hence, translation techniques of noun phrases in weather forecasts from English into Vietnamese could be taken into consideration in this study For that reason, I would like to carry out a study on the topic “A study on the translation of noun phrases in the weather forecasts from English into Vietnamese” to help learners and translators have deeper knowledge about noun English NPs: Hot weather Vietnamese NPs: thời tiết nóng + The translation procedures of this type of transposition are relatively simple First, the different elements in the group are separated The order is then converted to their respective word order in Vietnamese A plume of tropical air => Một luồng khơng khí nhiệt đới English: Global forecasting models Vietnamese: Các mơ hình dự báo toàn cầu 3.2.2.2 Class-shifts + Taking into account the grammar class, Catford (1965) states in his book that the class-shift is used when a source language item is translated with a target language item belonging to a different grammar class For example, a noun can be translated with a verb and vice versa Form : V-ing + N N + ADJ English NPs: Drizzling rain Vietnamese NPs: Mưa phùn Form N + N N + V English NPs: Flash flood Vietnamese NPs: Lũ quét 3.2.2.3 Intra-system shifts + Catford (1965) claims that “ change intra-system shifts occurs when source language and target language possess systems which approximately correspond formally as to their constitution, but when translation involves selection of a non-corresponding term in the target language system” For 26 example, when a singular source language becomes a plural target language Meanwhile, when compares with the source language, the target language may have some words added or omitted Therefore, the meaning of words in the target language may differ somehow from the source language The examples below show the grammatical changes of the source language words and some words added in the meaning of the target language: Dust devil => Gió xốy mang bụi N + N => N + V +N Those temperatures => Nhiệt độ Plural noun => Singuler noun 3.2.3 Sample content Using the translation methods outlined above below are examples of those methods used UK hot weather RETURNS: Britain to sizzle in 2-week HEATWAVE in time for May Bank Holiday THE UK is about to bake in a two-week heatwave with temperatures tipped to nudge 30C (86F) over the May Bank Holiday The wet and windy weather which kicked off the week is merely a „blip‟ with glorious sunshine and blue skies poised to burst through clouds this week A plume of tropical air from Europe via Spain and north Africa will sweep in ahead of the weekend heralding a return to roasting spring weather High pressure wedged over the country well into the middle of May will bring at least two weeks of pre-summer joy to the nation Temperatures will rocket from below-normal for the end of April to well above average for the time of year within the next couple of days, experts promise Thermometers in the upper 20Cs or even higher in parts will be around 15C warmer than normal for the start of the month Exacta weather forecaster James Madden said: “We are about to see a 27 gradual transition to some much better weather A warmer and more settled pattern will start to establish in time for the Bank Holiday weekend and is likely to become a dominant feature for several days at the very least.” “This could see temperatures ranging from the low to mid 20Cs quite widely “A small nudge in the right direction could even see 30C (86F) or more being breached in parts of the south within this period.” Freezing winds, torrential downpours and even snow at the start of the week threatened to dash hopes of a return to the glorious mid-April weather A violent low-pressure system from France battered southern Britain on Monday bringing gales and floods to parts of the region Daytime temperatures plunged to low single figures as overnight lows touched freezing in exposed, rural communities A tide of change will plunge Britain back into spring sunshine from Tuesday with the mercury poised to rocket around 10C from the start of the week The South will see highs of 14C (57.2F) with Scotland and the north, which escaped the stormy hammering, recaching similar values Much of the country edge towards 20C (68F) by the end of the week as the clouds part to let the sunshine through, according to the Met Office Meteorologist Alex Burkill said southern Britain will enjoy the best of the weather on Tuesday before the rest of the country turns brighter later in the week He said: “Tuesday will be a much better day with the very wet and windy weather on Monday likely to have been just a blip brought by a low-pressure system which moved up from the southeast and then tried to move across the UK “Wednesday will bring some outbreaks of rain to most places as a pretty normal Atlantic frontal system moves in “But Thursday is not looking to bad for most places with high pressure bringing bright and dry conditions quite widely 28 “Temperatures will also improve quite quickly this week and we are looking highs of 14C (57.2F) on Tuesday which is around 10C higher than the start of the week.” Conditions improve further through the weekend and into the Bank Holiday with plenty of blue skies and sunshine on the way, he added “From Friday and into the weekend the weather is not looking bad at all,” he said “Most places should enjoy a fair deal of sunny weather, the northwest may remain slightly changeable but elsewhere it is looking mostly dry and fine through the long weekend “We expect some decent spells of sunshine with temperatures back on the warm side, perhaps higher than average for the time of year “There is a good chance of getting into the 20Cs.” Weather charts show warm air from Spain and North Africa sweeping into the UK towards the end of this week Global Forecasting models show temperatures in parts of Britain hitting 26C (78.8F) by Saturday with highs of 28C (82.4F) possible by the start of next week A plume of warm air shows signs of taking hold of the country until the middle of May on some forecasting models Eleanor Bell, principal meteorologist, with the Weather Company, said temperatures will steadily move in the right direction through this week Wednesday may bring a last splattering of wind and rain before spring returns in a blaze of glory, she added She said: "We expect temperatures to rise this week as the north-easterly winds are replaced by a westerly flow “An unsettled day is expected on Wednesday as a band of rain sweeps eastwards, but we forecast a drier and brighter end to the week across central and southern areas under higher pressure “Temperatures will lift above normal on Friday in a south-westerly flow in between low pressure situated to the north-west and higher pressure across the 29 south “It will be a pleasant Bank Holiday weekend for many with temperatures lifting into the low 20Cs across the south bringing dry conditions and some warm spells of sunshine “It will be more unsettled over the north-west with cloudier skies and showers there but not completely ruling out any sunny spells.” Bookmaker Ladbrokes has slashed the odds on the cold being pushed out by roasting weather with the hottest May on record now 5-2 from 3-1 last week Spokesman Alex Apati said: “The odds suggest May will more than make up for the wet and windy end to April.” The Met Office‟s long-range outlook predicts rising temperatures with the risk of thunderstorms into the middle of May It states: “Fine weather is more likely across the whole country “It is likely to stay warm, however there is an increasing risk of thundery showers too.” The noun phrases translated Summary From pointing out the same and difference of the name of the weather forecast in English and Vietnamese, when translating the nouns of weather forecasts from English to Vietnamese, it must follow the translation strategy of Newmark Identify the nominal cluster and structure of the nominal cluster, the specific meaning of each component from which the methods determine the methods of translation But note that many constant weather concepts and terms are constantly created and have not an exact translation for it The above translation strategies are unlikely to apply all the nouns so the translator needs to spend a lot of time to understand the field of weather forecasts as well as other translation strategies to have a translation exactly 34 PART 3: CONCLUSION Recapitulation Based on theories of translation and the similarities and differences of noun phrases about weather forecasting in English and Vietnamese Translators can follow four Newmark's translation strategies such as naturalization , functionaldescriptive translation , reduction and expansion and shifts or transpositions to translate noun phrases on the weather forecast from English into Vietnamese From there, determine the structure of noun phrases in weather forecast and use appropriate methods for translation Limitation of the current research This study cannot avoid certain limitations The quality of the study was limited due to time constraints as well as the experience of the writer Therefore, first, this study mainly focuses on basic and common noun phrases in English weather reports and documents and this is only English to Vietnamese translation Second, despite the recommended strategies, translators and learners should also consider creativity because some unexpected situations can still occur in practice when translating English into Vietnamese In addition, those noun phrases are not included in the higher level of analysis Therefore, it is difficult for the analysis to cover and provide a comprehensive and detailed approach to this issue Finally, some noun phrases listed in the study may not be up to date, which may affect translation quality Suggestions for further research Research can be a useful resource for understanding the general characteristics of noun phrases as well as some useful translation methods for translating noun phrases What has been presented above is only a preliminary investigation The thesis only briefly considers some common difficulties when translating noun phrases and some strategies to support translators to improve their
