INTRODUCTION A Social Studies course designed to help learners understand and appreciate their social environment They prepare learner to fit better in to society A complete menu of our lives, the course sets out to develop new perception about the world around us It’s wonderful people and other unknown treasures It unlocks the adventurous spirit and looks to quench the thirst for knowledge Modern education lays great emphasize on developing powers of observation ,experimentation and practical work For the transaction of secondary school curriculum ,museum, library , laboratories ,social science room, etc are more essential MUSEUM Museums are wonderful media for public education They are institutions that collect and preserve original objects and specimens , and use them for research and educational displays The displays often consist of replicas, models, and diagrams designed to create interest and educate the public Museums are repositories with an array of materials arranged in a logical order on a variety of subjects They Serve as valuable sources of material for instructions Most of the museums concentrate on art , history ,science and anthropology Every school can build its own museum if there are a few enthusiastic teachers and pupils in it LIBRARY According to Tagore “A good library is one that keeps books on every subjects , but only selected books; where the librarian is a true devotee, devoid of ulterior seeking from pride in the mere loading of shelves, capable of discriminate rejection “ Social science libraries are special libraries supporting research and practice in the broad domain of the social science Thus the section includes for example big business libraries as well as small research institute libraries in the fields of linguistic or anthropology Social Science library supporting the research and teaching needs of the departments of anthropology as well as the school of international and public affairs The efficient running of a school library depends upon many factors such as : Role of librarian Role of teachers Location of library room Quality of books Organization of school library The aims of a library may be fulfilled only when it is well organized Hence the following points should be considered while organizing the library Location of the library The library should separated from the study hall, but it should be us near as possible it should admit plenty of fresh air and sunshine The floor should be covered with carpet to deaden sound All possible surface downward from a point seven feet above the floor should be utilized for shelving Quality of books Proper attention should be given to the quality of books while purchasing these for the library 3.Suitability of books In the library there should be books according to the age , ability and interest of the students as well as the needs of the teachers There should be text books for general reading , books for advanced reading in the subject area , hand books ,reference book etc… 4.librarian He should have knowledge of contents of every book He should know the aptitudes and interest of every student and should help students by suggesting appreciate books to them he should maintain a study atmosphere and discipline in his room 5.Arrangement of books The books should be arranged in such a manner that the student himself can find out what books he should read on a Particular subject Subject teachers should be assist in the arrangement of books Purpose of school library It provides self study and self education It supplements class work and increase pupil vocabulary It develops new interest in children and motivates them to write poems ,stories , essays , and plays It helps pupils to improve their performance in debates ,declamation contests and library activities It gives them pleasure in leisure hours many pupils cultivate ‘reading hobbies’ It helps children to maintain good discipline in their life It develops the habit of silent reading It imparts training in punctuality by borrowing and returning books in time It imparts training to pupils in comprehension , note making and keeping books clean It broadness the outlook of students by placing before them a vast store of useful information At present the library is not properly utilized in most of the schools Pupils should be encouraged to use the library for which the following steps are suggested; Each students should be asked to maintain a library note book Periods for library works should be provided in the time table Class library system should be encouraged Book lovers club should be formed SOCIAL STUDIES ROOM Like any other subject rooms there should be a separate room for social studies The setting and arrangement of this room should be such that it creates an atmosphere for the study and teaching of social studies The students entering the room would find themselves interested in the learning of social studies At present we have various types of teaching aids such as text books ,referenced books , pamphlets , maps , charts, projectors, models , magazines ,etc……and these can be properly used if they are stored in a systematic way in a separate room is called the social studies room A provision of a special room for social studies is desirable because of the following consideration : Providing home of their own to teachers for developing enthusiasm for the subject and faith in themselves and students Creating and maintaining an effective teaching learning environment Providing quick and ready functional environment by making available work room for the students Introducing variety in teaching methods and facilitating the use of teaching aids readily and conveniently Saving energy and time carrying round equipment like charts , maps , models ,pictures , and projects etc… It should be provided with the following equipments like bulletin-board ,charts and graphs , globs ,,maps and atlas, flags , models ,stamps ,time charts and graphs ,periodical and ,magazines etc ADVATAGE OF SOCIAL STUDIES ROOM 1.Scientyific Teaching :-It helps to make it possible to Bring about the scientific teaching of the subject 2.It makes teaching of social studies effective:-it saves the spoiling of materials for the teaching of social studies , in the transit and also the time 3.Proper atmosphere :-it creates an atmosphere suitable and congenial for the teaching of social studies 4.It develops the power of imagination and observation:- in a particularly equipped social studies room , there are maps , charts , and other useful things for the teaching of social studies these things helps to develop power of observation and imagination of students All these things are possible if the social studies room is properly equipped SOCIAL STUDIES LABORATORY In the laboratory of social studies the students will undertake various types of activities such as research construction ,music, dramatic and creative art etc in a free and desirable environment it is therefore that educators today have realized necessity to have a separate social studies laboratory where in such an environment prevails that promote an excellent teaching process Such as class room with a pleasant social climate becomes a learning laboratory in great emphasis is put on student activity and participation in class room procedures Besides regular social studies periods provided in the school time table some periods be allotted for laboratory works in social studies The basic purpose of laboratory work develop skills , original thinking ,planning and to develop creative expression among students in the laboratory work periods students are busy in drawing maps ,preparing graphs ,charts time lines ,models or picture, solving problem working on projects and answering given the questions and assignment individually or in groups specific instructions are given to the students regarding the work to be done and source from where the material is to be collected In these work periods the teacher act as a guide and director he gives suggestion guidance encouragement and helps when the pupils are in difficulty it is his duty to see that the pupils achieve their goals with the least wastage of time and energy laboratory work provides the kinds of social relationship in which both the pupils and teacher plan work ,study and learn together they may be working individually or in groups But the feelings is that all are engaged in task leading to a common goal CONCLUSION Modern education lays great emphasis on developing powers of observation , experimentation , and practical work museums are wonderful media for public education The social science libraries supporting research and practice in the broad domain of the social science For the transaction of secondary school curriculum , museum , library ,laboratory , social science room etc… are more essential
