both m ultimode and singlemode optical fibres Sectional specifications for each of the four categories m ultim ode fibres: A1 , A2, A3, and A4 (part of the multim ode fibre class A) contain requirem ents specific to each category Sectional specifications for each of the two single-mode fibre classes, B and C, contain requirements comm on to each class Each sectional specification includes family specifications (in normative annexes) that contain requirements for the applicable category or sub-categories These sub-categories are distinguished on the basis of different fibre types or applications The requirements of this standard appl y to all classes Each sectional specification contains the requirem ents that are comm on to all the fam il y specifications that are within it These comm on requirem ents are copied to the famil y specification for ease of reference Tests or measurement m ethods are defined for each specified attribute Where possible, these definitions are by reference to an I EC standard – otherwise the test or m easurem ent method is outlined in the relevant sectional specification Table defines the sectional specifications The relevant famil y specifications are defined within the sectional specifications as normative annexes (see Tables to 5) Annexes A and B summ arize the existing fibre specifications Tabl e D ocu m en t I D – S e c ti o fibre in the core of which the radiation of two or m ore bound m odes can propagate at the wavelength of interest [SOU RCE: I EC 60050-731 : 991 , 731 -02-03] si n g l e-m od e fibre optical fibre in which the radiation of onl y one bound mode can propagate at the wavelength of interest [SOU RCE: I EC 60050-731 : 991 , 731 -02-02, m odified — N ote deleted] 3 core central region of an optical surrounding the core [SOU RCE: I EC 60050-731 : 991 , 731 -02-05] 3.5 primary coating thin coating applied directl y to the cladding, usually at the tim e of the fibre drawing, in one or more layers, to preserve integrity of the cladding surface Note to entry: A second ary coating m ay be appl ied directly to th e prim ary coating, of one or m ore fi bres, to rei nforce the protection of th e and/or buffer applied on the prim ary coating and/or buffer or on the secondary coating in order to m ake each fibre distinguishable by its colour Quality assurance I t is the responsibility of the supplier to establish quality assurance by quality control procedures which ensures that the product m eets the requirem ents of this standard and the related sectional specifications and fam il y specifications I t is not intended that a com plete testing programme be carried out on every length of fibre When the customer wishes to specify acceptance tests or other quality procedures, it is essential that an agreement be reached between the supplier and the customer at the time of ordering Construction of optical fibres 5.1 Class A – Multimode fibres The m ain fibre categories are based on g, the refractive index profile parameter, see Table The norm alized index profile is expressed as: ( )=1 − x δx g (1 ) where ( ) = nn((0x)) −− nn((11 )) δx x a n(x) = r a (0 ≤ r ≤ a ) is the norm
