16 The research spans the period from 1976 to 2030, as this time period reflects the significant developments in Vietnam since its independence in 1975, after a long time under Chinese, French and American dominion (more than 1,000 years) Data considerations As the methodological framework for this research is embedded within several disciplines and research methods, its data requirements are both diverse and extensive Each specific objective has different expected outcomes, and also applies different methods; hence, the data collection and analysis is also in accordance with the specific requirements of these methods The first research objective involves an analysis of the historical evolution of E-F-W security nexus Therefore, this analysis is assisted by an extensive literature review, including secondary data resources from books, journals, institutions, and policy archives - in terms of evolvement of the history of the country, specially the energy, food and water sectors Regarding the second objective, namely to develop various E-F-W scenarios, major data requirements relate to the projections of final demands for energy, food and water, and their respective usage based on the GDP growth targets Six scenarios of GDP growth are considered in this research based on alternative pathways of the country’s socio-economic development These scenarios are broadly in accord with the Vietnamese government’s 2014 Strategic Planning and Vietnam 2030 Outlook, provided by Vietnam Government in 2014 The projections of E-F-W, and economic elasticities for Vietnam, use information available from several resources, with additional data sourced from other countries with similar economic bases such as India, Thailand and China The data was primarily derived from Vietnam’s General Statistics Office (GSO), Ministry of Investment and Trade (MOIT), Asia Development Bank (ADB), World Bank (WB) and International Energy Agency (IEA) More details of this data collection are discussed in Chapter To achieve the third and fourth objectives, namely, to evaluate the impacts from E-F-W security initiatives on socio-economic growth, the E-F-W-oriented input-output model is developed This input-output model is derived from the I-O table available from
