world whose mother tongue is not English have been trying to master the skills of the English language Currently, many people tend to love and choose the method of learning English through movies In particular, this is also a way of self-studying English selected by many students at Hanoi University of Business and Technology (HUBT) This article aims to find out the positive effects that watching movies brings in improving students' English speaking and listening skills at HUBT In addition, the study also pointed out some difficulties that students may encounter and suggested some solutions to help self-study English through movie viewing more effectively To conduct the study 100 students from K23, K24 in HUBT participated in this survey research A questionnaire survey is employed to collect data for the research The findings indicated that many students at HUBT are aware that they can improve their listening and speaking skills by watching English movies They also think watching English movies has a more direct influence on listening skill compared to speaking skill Besides, subtitles also can help respondents to understand English conversation in the movies more effectively From the above results, it can be concluded that learning English through movies has supported motivation to the learning process of HUBT students in particular and English learners, in general, become interesting, effective, and successful Keywords: English listening and speaking skills, effects, difficulties, solutions vii LIST OF ABBREVIATION HUBT : Hanoi University of Business and watching movies per week Chart 3.3: Students’ selection of movie genres to watch Chart 3.4: Students’ preference for using subtitle to watch movies Chart 3.5: Students’ motivation to watch English movies Table 3.6: Students’ agreement on Listening skill Table 3.7: Students’ agreement on Speaking skill viii PART A: INTRODUCTION Rationale of the study In a modern society with a growing globalized economy, English has become a common language that brings countries together So, it is not uncommon for English to become a global language that everyone must learn and master Among the four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, the two last one is being paid the most attention Due to the geographical distance as well as the difficulties in the teaching and learning environment that many schools, many students have not had the opportunity to contact with real English and practice these two skills Therefore, learning English through movie viewing has become an easy, convenient and effective option For them, English movies are more suitable as they provide the real-time experience of learning the English language It is also one of the top choices for many students at Hanoi University of Business and Technology (HUBT) to improve their listening and speaking skills Nowadays, phones, laptops, or tablets have become indispensable tools in the life and learning process of students at HUBT With these devices, they can easily search, watch movies, share and download videos to watch over and over again in their spare time Besides, for students in HUBT, developing listening and speaking skills is very important because it is the foundation to accumulate vocabulary, grammar as well as cultural knowledge Then, they can improve their writing and reading skills To achieve such results, viewing frequency and genre selection is some of the key factors influencing this Hence, for many people, watching movies is not only for entertainment purposes, but it has a very positive impact on their English learning process Being aware of the importance of this, the researcher decided to conduct a study entitled: “A study on the effects of movie viewing on learning English to develop listening and speaking skills of students at Hanoi University of Business and Technology” Aims and objectives of the study This study is aimed at finding out how students at HUBT are getting benefit from watching English movies to advance their listening and speaking skills Also, the paper suggests some recommendations to help their learning process become more effective Research questions This study aims to answer the following questions: What are the benefits students get when learning English through movie viewing to improve their listening and speaking skills? What are some useful solutions that help them improve their English listening and speaking skills? The scope of the study Due to the researcher’s limitation of time and ability, this study only focuses on listening and speaking skills through the survey questionnaires piloted to one group of 100 students from K23, K24 in HUBT to investigate the benefits students get when learning English through movie viewing as well as find out solutions to improve their listening and speaking skills Design of the study The study consists of three main parts: Part 1: Introduces the aim and objectives of the study, and the methodology used to conduct this paper Part 2: Development Chapter 1: Literature Review 3.2 Discussion 3.2.1 Watching movies is a great way to learn the English language, especially listening and speaking skills In my opinion, almost everyone likes to watch movies, especially students For them, watching movies is a wonderful way to enjoy their free time and help them relieve pressure after stressful working hours However, if you are a language learner and are trying to learn English, watching movies is not only a great way to practice listening and speaking English fluently but also the most enjoyable way to learn, providing incredible motivation and results for learners Watching movies is a new and interesting way to learn English: If you are learning English as a second language, sometimes going to class, reading thick textbooks, then doing boring grammar exercises or listening to unnatural conversations and learning speaking English in the templates was tired and stressful If this is true for you, it might be a good idea to start watching movies in English in between your classes to take a break from the books and spend more time at home to learn about them in detail In addition, experiencing a new learning method will be an excellent way for students to renew themselves and get more positive energy as well as motivation in the learning process Hence, they can think of it as a relaxing and fun way to learn how to speak English fluently Learning English through watching movies help you to improve your vocabulary: Watching movies in English helps you learn new words and improve your vocabulary This includes natural English such as slang, idioms, and colloquial expressions These are difficult to learn from course books Hearing new words or expressions, and understanding them in context, will allow you to use them correctly in your conversation 22 Students can learn natural English and use words in the right context: Watching movies in English allows you to learn real English in real situations You can learn many new ways to say something and express yourself in daily life Not only pronunciation, but body language is also very important Besides, the great thing about watching movies in English is that you can learn exactly when you should use a particular word You can see in which situation or context you can use it A good example is ‘get’ ‘Get’ has more than 200 meanings, so understanding exactly how people use it in real life will help you in everyday conversations Learners can explore the culture of English-speaking countries through watching movies: It is almost impossible to learn a language without also getting to know something about the culture or cultures it comes from, and for many people the cultural aspect of language learning is just as important as conjugating verbs Films are a great way to become more familiar with different aspects of culture - be it American, Australian, British, or any other Englishspeaking nation Being exposed to different accents and dialects will also get you ready for the different types of English that you will encounter in the real world Students can improve listening skill through movie viewing: Firstly, most students practice English listening skill by listening to lessons in books and textbooks The bad thing about these is that English is used unnaturally like what native speakers would use in real life, especially in communication situations If students want to practice English listening skill to communicate naturally by movie viewing, they will learn how native English speakers use English in countless practical situations Furthermore, they also learn slang words, pronunciation, how native speakers use words in communication, how to express emotions, Secondly, if you just listen to it, it will be very confusing and boring 23 Moreover, if your listening skill is poor, you just can hear a few words, you may not understand anything and give up easily But if you watch the movie, will you be able to see what's going on? You can feel how the character is sad, happy, angry You may see the surrounding scenery and context, too Besides, each movie has different content, it will give you the excitement to watch This is considered as "Learning while playing", so it will not make you feel bored Last but not least, the film is produced for native speakers, not for English learners, so the actor speaks quickly like a native speaks every day So this is a great way for students to increase their listening skill and learn to communicate and pronounce like them Movie viewing helps students learn how to speak English fluently: Not having to force students like going to a classroom, learning English through watching movies is considered a passive and effective way of receiving information New words and grammar are entered the viewers' brain most naturally through episodes When the characters say a new word, the viewer will remember and immediately pronounce the word again This method will help learners to pronounce correctly both in terms of stress, intonation and know the use situations of new words Then, students can speak English more confidently, naturally, and fluently through a long enough training period 24 3.2.2 Difficulties students may encounter when watching movies to learn English Problems in poor English vocabulary: If grammar is like the skeleton constituting the person, then the vocabulary is considered the flesh to create a complete human being Therefore, vocabulary is very important when learning a language It can be said that the vocabulary is infinite, it is always evolving and is constantly being born In many cases, native speakers not comprehend all the words in their language Because of the poor vocabulary, many students are unable to fully understand the character's lines as well as the film's content during the learning process This often leads to depression and makes them give up easily Problems in the way to watch movies while learning English: Many people always complain that why they spend so much time learning English through movies, watching so many movies without having any improvement in speaking or listening skills But they not realize that how to watch a movie is very important If people simply watch and enjoy a movie but don't take notes or just watch the movie once with subtitles, it doesn't work Problems in choosing the movie: First of all, many students choose movies that are not suitable for learning English Genres such as science fiction or horror contain many difficult words that are not commonly used in communication, so it is not useful for students in the learning process Furthermore, it is also equally important to classify films according to the learners' level Students often tend to choose movies in which actors speak quickly, so they cannot catch up, leading to having serious problems understanding words 25 Problems in lacking contextual knowledge: Understanding the context and mutual knowledge will help learners listen and communicate more easily Sometimes listeners can understand the literal meaning of a conversation, but they have difficulty in understanding the figurative meaning of a paragraph or a talk unless they have experienced it or are familiar with it Problems in adapting to new learning methods: Most students are learning English with old habits and learning methods So, when approaching a new learning method as learning English through movies, they are still confused and have not fully exploited the benefits of this Hence, proactive and persistent are two essential factors 3.2.3 Some recommendations for learning English listening and speaking skills through movies 26 In the learning process, students should learn words and phrases while watching movies by taking notes, then practising them in specific contexts, or imagining using these words in the same context for longer memorization Besides, students should remember a key point that “ IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD, DON’T WORRY!” A good practice that many experts always recommend is not to focus too much on single words If you don’t understand every word in a sentence, it doesn’t matter The important thing is that you understand the general meaning of what the actors are saying Moreover, for students who are at quite a low English level, they should choose short films (about 15 to 30 minutes) with the character's lines are slow, easy to hear and understand However, if you have a higher level of English, you can try to challenge yourself and watch films with more advanced language Furthermore, to most effectively study through movies, students should choose the movies associated with daily life such as comedy, romance, cartoon I highly recommend for students to watch movies on sites like Netflix, FPT because these sites are a huge database of movies, they also have very good subtitles and movie quality If you want to watch movies on free platforms, youtube is not a bad choice, but you also need to choose channels with good content As for movies, I suggest you watch the series Friends, Pixar, Ice ages These are very interesting and fun movies with content close to everyday life At the same time, watching movies many times (minimum of times) with subtitles and no subtitles is necessary Because this will help you advance your English listening and speaking skills better 3.3 Summary of the chapter In conclusion, chapter has given readers the positive effects that learning English through movies brings in students, especially in improving their 27 speaking and listening skills Besides, from the questionnaire and collected data, the researcher also pointed out some difficulties that students may encounter in using this new learning method But those problems can be completely overcome if learners have enough determination, perseverance, and diligence In addition, the paper also suggests some solutions with the hope that they can help students partially solve the difficulties they are facing when learning English through movies Finally, the findings as shown explicitly throughout the chapter indicate that the study has been done validly and has enabled the researcher to answer the two research questions PART C: CONCLUSION 28 This part will deal with a summary of the major findings, limitations of the study, and some suggestions for further studies Recapitulation Overall, this entire study has provided an overview from a specific angle about the effects of movie viewing on learning English to develop the listening and speaking skills of students at Hanoi University of Business and Technology According to the finding, all the participants agreed that they received positive results from learning English through movie viewing The main benefits that can be mentioned are improving listening skills through daily English conversations with close content; improving pronunciation skills; learning and using many new words in the right contexts as well as learn how to express emotions, gestures through motion pictures in the movies to communicate more naturally and fluently In addition, learning English through movies can support the motivation of the students and helps them learn about the cultures of Englishspeaking countries (like American, British, Canada, Australia…) and be exposed to different accents, dialects that learners may encounter in reality Besides, students believe that they can improve the listening and speaking skills by watching English movies Based on the data analysis, the researcher has found out that watching English movies has a more direct influence on listening skill compared to speaking skill On the other hand, the paper has pointed out some problems that students will encounter in their learning process such as limited vocabulary, difficulty in approaching and absorbing new learning methods, lacking contextual knowledge as well as choosing unsuitable movie genres From the negative factors that affect students' learning process, the researcher has proposed some solutions for them Firstly, students need to take 29 note of new words, phrases and make sentences, then practice them in specific contexts to remember longer Secondly, learners should not focus too much on single words, students would try to put them in context to understand the meaning of the whole video Those, who are at low English levels, should choose short films with easy-to-hear dialogue Researchers also advise students to choose movies such as comedy, romance, cartoons and watch them on platforms like Netflix, youtube, FPT, Moreover, the learner had better watch the movie at least times with subtitles so as not to miss any proverbs, intonation, or slang It is undeniable that English has become a language for global communication Thus, mastering English skills becomes an urgent and important task, especially for students The researcher hopes that HUBT students will try and spend more time on the method of learning English through movie viewing to achieve good results in the learning process as well as improve their listening and speaking skills Limitation of the study Although the researcher has made a considerable effort to complete the study, there are still some unavoidable limitations beyond expectation Due to time deficiency, sources restriction, and the researcher’s limited experience, the study still has some shortcomings Firstly, the researcher initially tends to combine questionnaires with interviews or observation so that the findings are more varied and convincing However, due to the lack of time and some incidents when contacting and making appointments with the intended classes, the survey is carried out only with questionnaires Secondly, the time allowed to implement this research topic is limited, so the study cannot cover all aspects of the field and only focus on the most typical ones Thirdly, this study just stops at the research scope of the influence of watching movies on the English learning 30 process of students at HUBT In short, the researcher hopes that future studies in the same field will consider those limitations to become more complete and high- appreciated All the constructive comments and contributions for this study will be positively welcomed Suggestion for further study Considering all the above limitations, it is advised for further study that other researchers should assess the link between students’ attitudes and their communication skills along with watching movies To enhance the effectiveness of the skill communication, they should also pay more attention to factors that facilitate students' learning, confidence, and communication skill A survey or interview will make the research more interesting and complete Also, other researchers should expand the scope of the study, not only for students at HUBT but also for students at other universities in Hanoi city such as National Economics University, Hanoi Open University, Thang Long University, REFERENCES 31 Bentley, S (1996) The All Neuv, State-of-the-Art ILA Definition of Listening: Nou That We Have It, What Do We Do With It?
