CHAPTER 2: THE STATUS OF LEARNING VOCABULARY OF THU DAU UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
English is a West Germanic language that is part of the Indo-European language family, originating from early medieval England Its name is derived from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain Linguistically, English is closely related to Frisian and Lower Saxon, but its vocabulary has evolved significantly over the centuries, incorporating influences from French and Latin, each contributing about 29% to modern English, along with Old Norse impacts on its core grammar and vocabulary.
Old English emerged from the ancient North Sea Germanic dialects spoken by the Anglo-Saxons who migrated to Great Britain in the 5th century, evolving through interactions with Old Norse during the Viking era The Middle English period began in the late 11th century following the Norman invasion, significantly influenced by Old French and Latin By the late 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, marked by a major vowel shift and the incorporation of Greco-Roman vocabulary during the Renaissance This era saw the flourishing of English literature, highlighted by the King James Bible translation and the works of William Shakespeare.
Modern English grammar has evolved from the Indo-European system, transitioning from a dependent-marking structure with rich morphological variation and flexible word order to a more analytic form This evolution has led to reduced morphological variation and a more fixed subject-verb-adjective order Today, English heavily utilizes auxiliary verbs and specific word order to convey complex tenses, moods, aspects, as well as passive, interrogative, and negative forms.
Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the British Empire and the United States, becoming a key lingua franca in various professional fields such as science, navigation, and law It is the most widely spoken language worldwide and ranks third in native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish Additionally, English is the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Notably, the number of individuals who speak English as a foreign language now surpasses that of native speakers.
As of 2005, there are approximately 2 billion English speakers globally English serves as the primary language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland, and it is also prevalent in various regions of the Caribbean and Europe, as well as in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania Additionally, English is recognized as a co-official language of the United Nations, the European Union, and numerous other international organizations, making it the most widely spoken Germanic language, representing at least 70% of all speakers of Indo-European languages.
Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can impede successful language acquisition Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is essential for engaging with and mastering a second language Nation (2001) expands on this by discussing the interdependent relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language use, emphasizing that understanding vocabulary enhances language application and vice versa The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students strive to attain comprehensive vocabulary knowledge Researchers such as Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011) have contributed to this understanding.
The acquisition of vocabulary is crucial for effectively using a second language, as it significantly contributes to the development of coherent spoken and written texts In both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary plays a vital role across all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a comprehensive vocabulary is essential for successful communication; without it, learners struggle to express themselves clearly Lexical knowledge is a key factor in achieving fluency, and its absence presents a major challenge for learners aiming to communicate effectively in English (Huckin, 1995).

A brief overview of the English vocabulary learning status of all students
A recent survey on students' English vocabulary revealed a concerning trend: only about 10% of students can speak English fluently, with a mere 2% demonstrating smooth comprehension This limited proficiency highlights a significant language barrier, particularly in the context of global communication and international economic integration As Vietnam strives to engage with the world, the lack of foreign language skills among the younger generation—who represent a vital source of knowledge and labor—hinders opportunities for learning and collaboration with other nations Addressing this issue is crucial for fostering growth and development in the country.
Many students at the school struggle with English fluency, primarily due to challenges with vocabulary acquisition Learning English involves not just translation but also understanding the nuances of adjectives, verbs, and nouns, which can be difficult in context The limited exposure to English, as students predominantly interact in Vietnamese during school and part-time jobs, hampers their learning Although they attend extra-curricular English classes, the short duration often leads to quick learning followed by forgetfulness, as they may not use new vocabulary consistently This cycle of learning and forgetting proves time-consuming and ineffective To address this issue, I plan to conduct a survey on vocabulary learning among English majors, aiming to gather insights that can benefit students from other disciplines and foster collective progress, ultimately breaking down language barriers and enhancing communication with international peers.
Methods of implementation
The survey method is to create a survey form and print the survey form on A4 paper with 200 survey sheets Take surveys directly from students in the English language major

SOLUTION
Group of solutions about the environment outside of school hours
Engaging in extracurricular activities such as clubs, associations, and English contests outside of school hours significantly enhances students' vocabulary acquisition These environments provide opportunities for students to interact with native speakers and immerse themselves in real English situations, thereby accelerating their learning and retention of the language To further enrich these out-of-school experiences and optimize conditions for students, I recommend implementing targeted solutions.
Firstly, create opportunities for students to collide and interact with real-life situations with native speakers: The best way to learn English effectively is to practice
To enhance English listening skills, it is essential for students to regularly expose their ears to the language by listening daily and interacting with native speakers This consistent practice not only improves their listening comprehension but also enhances their speaking and pronunciation abilities over time Such skills are invaluable in today’s global economy, where opportunities for cultural exchange, studying abroad, and travel are abundant.
To enhance English language training for students, it is essential to organize engaging activities that promote active participation Events such as English Olympiads, singing contests, and speech competitions can inspire students to practice their skills Additionally, launching initiatives aimed at fostering English learning within the ASEAN community can further motivate students These activities should be held regularly to maintain enthusiasm and encourage continuous improvement in English proficiency Furthermore, a diverse range of formats and flexible application scopes will create optimal opportunities for English majors to thrive.
Infrastructure solutions
English learning resources in libraries are often underutilized by students due to their lack of diversity and accessibility, as they mainly consist of basic English learning methods and foreign major books Additionally, the absence of dedicated English classrooms and extracurricular activities, such as English clubs, hampers the learning experience To address these issues, it is essential to redesign and upgrade English teaching spaces, ensuring regular maintenance of teaching equipment, particularly sound systems, to enhance audio-visual clarity during lessons Incorporating essential learning tools like illustrations and vocabulary cards can make lessons more engaging and dynamic Furthermore, classrooms should be designed with movable furniture arranged scientifically to promote comfort and relaxation, facilitating better absorption of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills Limiting class sizes to a maximum of 15 students will foster more effective interaction between teachers and students, enhancing the overall learning experience.
Create a dedicated self-study space for students to enhance their English skills, featuring comfortable areas for relaxation and communication practice Incorporate activities such as reading, topic-based discussions, TOEIC testing, movie watching, and karaoke in English Organize vocabulary games and thematic talks with experienced lecturers and proficient students Foster collaboration with English clubs from other schools and invite foreign volunteers for interactive sessions This initiative aims to cultivate a friendly exchange environment that promotes enthusiasm for English learning Additionally, ensure the installation of free wireless fiber optic Internet in the study area, allowing students to choose their preferred study locations.
To enhance student learning, the library must diversify and update its collection of English books, particularly in key areas like business administration, accounting, and finance This will enable students from various majors to access valuable resources that support their English learning Additionally, providing free access to educational websites and installing more computers with high-speed internet will facilitate document searches, video watching, and downloading of English listening lessons Furthermore, equipping the library with additional tables and chairs will create a conducive environment for individual reading, listening practice, and group discussions in English.
Group of solutions about the environment inside the classroom
Students generally rate the environmental factors in the classroom poorly, with many aspects falling below average In English lessons, Vietnamese remains the primary language of instruction, limiting the effectiveness of these classes Additionally, the current curriculum does not adequately focus on enhancing students' English learning skills, resulting in knowledge that is only retained at a cognitive level without practical application Suggested solutions include revising the curriculum to prioritize skill development and increasing the use of English in the classroom.
Teachers can effectively implement the compulsory practice method by consistently using English in the classroom, which encourages students to actively listen and interpret the language However, this approach necessitates patience and a coordinated effort among all instructors, avoiding any discrepancies in course selection by students Transitioning to complete English instruction requires a gradual, well-planned roadmap, as attempting to do so abruptly may lead to confusion and hinder students' understanding of the material being taught.
The school should develop a strategic plan to transition from using Vietnamese to exclusively teaching in English, allowing students ample time to adjust and foster a positive mindset towards English classes Additionally, short training sessions for lecturers are essential to enhance their communication skills and facilitate the sharing of teaching experiences with foreign educators.
Students should recognize the significance of actively preparing for lessons before attending class Dedicating time to practice English at home enhances their mood and boosts confidence, enabling them to engage more effectively in their studies This proactive approach helps prevent a passive learning experience and promotes better academic outcomes.
Regular exposure to English in lessons enhances students' Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills, facilitating better communication and retention of vocabulary This consistent practice builds confidence in expressing thoughts in English and improves pronunciation, as teachers provide guidance on corrections Additionally, students learn to stress sounds correctly in sentences and expand their vocabulary by imitating the teacher's pronunciation and utilizing new words.
This effective solution enhances students' English vocabulary skills by encouraging thorough preparation before class and promoting focused engagement during lessons to fully understand the material presented by the teacher.
To enhance student engagement in English classes, teachers should implement measures that encourage practice, such as introducing a mandatory score column for group activities where students communicate in English By assigning relevant topics for each lesson, educators can motivate students to participate actively and earn extra points Creating real-life communication scenarios is essential for fostering a lively classroom environment that captivates student interest This approach allows students to apply newly acquired knowledge immediately, improving retention and comprehension of vocabulary, pronunciation, and contextual usage Furthermore, integrating opportunities to review past lessons enables students to connect new information with prior knowledge, cultivating a more effective learning habit and a stronger grasp of the material beyond textbook learning.
The English language program emphasizes practical application, catering to learners who often begin their studies with specific goals in mind Typically, students start with a general English curriculum, which is commonly taught in high schools to facilitate basic communication on everyday subjects Since the 1960s, there has been a growing trend towards developing English teaching programs tailored to the individual needs of learners, leading to the emergence of English for Specific Purposes (ESP).
In today's global landscape, the demand for scientific, technical, and economic exchange has established English as the primary language of communication This shift, coupled with advancements in industry, has propelled the field of Linguistics and the learner-centered approach of English for Specialization (ESP) to significant progress, drawing the interest of numerous researchers and translators focused on developing teaching materials.
To enhance English proficiency and familiarize students with economic and commercial terminology, the English program for the Faculty of Spoken English should initially focus on general business communication, aligning with school output standards and TOEIC requirements Subsequently, to address students' needs for specialized reading materials, the curriculum must incorporate ESAP (English for Specific Academic Purposes), which emphasizes the language structure, vocabulary, terminology, and specific skills relevant to their field of study, concentrating on real-world professional scenarios.
The proposed curriculum solution divides the program into two key parts: a general English section aimed at enhancing students' overall language and study skills, building on the General Business English program, and a specialized section tailored to the students' majors, focusing on reading comprehension and specialized terminology This specialized section will feature team teaching by groups of lecturers who will design the curriculum, create teaching materials, and collaborate with specialized instructors to ensure relevant content delivery This approach not only highlights the essential role of language teachers but also addresses the need for effective instruction in specialized English.
At the same time limit the study of knowledge that overlaps with what was learned in the general education program.
Incorporating a variety of images and video clips into lessons enhances students' understanding of native speakers' cultural communication, including gestures and contextual word usage This approach significantly boosts vocabulary acquisition compared to traditional lectures Visual aids not only clarify new concepts but also increase engagement and excitement in the classroom Teachers should invest time in curating relevant multimedia content and encourage students to participate by finding clips and images related to upcoming lessons Over time, this collaborative effort fosters student initiative in lesson preparation and boosts their enthusiasm as they see the results of their contributions, ultimately improving their listening skills in selecting appropriate clips.
To enhance practical experience in the classroom, it's crucial to immediately apply the knowledge you are learning to real-life situations This approach allows for corrections in pronunciation, intonation, and delivery, fostering creativity and encouraging the active selection of vocabulary and appropriate sentence structures Additionally, engaging with peers and teachers facilitates deeper learning and retention of concepts.
Frequent and diverse grammar examples enhance retention and application in communication Educators should prioritize speaking, writing, and passage analysis over multiple-choice formats to foster critical thinking and improve memory Collaborative learning among students can further enrich their understanding of English grammar, making practice more engaging and effective.
The curriculum should be tailored to enhance students' English vocabulary acquisition, requiring schools to regularly update and select appropriate materials for each learning stage This approach ensures balanced practice across all four skills, with a particular emphasis on communication Additionally, it is recommended to adjust the assessment ratio to 50/50, aligning with curriculum objectives and accommodating both vocabulary proficiency and overall English learning in final evaluations This method alleviates pressure on students and program managers regarding classroom demands and exam preparation, while promoting equitable English learning outcomes across all majors within the faculty.
Solution group on students' self-study ability
Self-study plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of learning and training, paving the way for success Through self-study, students can stay up-to-date with knowledge, particularly in English, and quickly adapt to new information while developing innovative learning methods The inherent desire to learn anytime and anywhere drives students to improve their academic performance Achieving success in academics and effective communication in English necessitates strong self-study skills, self-research, and exploration for personal growth and development.
Despite achieving only above-average assessment scores, students at the Faculty of English Language recognize the importance of setting goals to enhance their English communication skills and actively seek diverse resources for improvement However, there is a need to focus on three key areas to further boost their abilities Additionally, students often apply limited and ineffective learning methods that do not align with their individual needs They allocate insufficient time to enhance their English communication skills, primarily focusing on English modules while neglecting self-study To address these challenges and build on their strengths, students should implement targeted solutions.
To succeed in self-studying English, it's essential to believe in your abilities and leverage both internal resources and external guidance from lecturers Setting clear goals and maintaining motivation are crucial; aim for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives For instance, if your goal is to achieve a TOEIC score of 450 within six months, commit to learning at least 10 new vocabulary words daily, practice listening through English dialogues on platforms like YouTube, and regularly review grammar Additionally, take practice tests online to assess your progress and ensure consistent improvement.
To improve their English vocabulary, students must take their goals seriously and actively strive to enhance their learning abilities Staying motivated is crucial; they can engage in fun activities like games that promote English communication, such as listening to guessing clips or compiling vocabulary lists on specific topics Changing study environments, like moving to a park or a friend's house, can also boost interest and energy levels, fostering a more positive and enthusiastic attitude towards self-study Recognizing the importance of motivation in learning English communication is essential, as it significantly impacts the success of their study plans and routines.
Third, in order to have a method of training to improve the ability to learn
To effectively enhance their English vocabulary, students should develop a well-structured study plan and manage it diligently This plan should involve defining clear learning objectives and exploring various methods, such as focusing on specific topics or fields of interest Engaging actively in class lectures and utilizing resources like reference books is essential Students should apply the SQ3R method—Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review—to effectively summarize and retain key information It is crucial for students to remain attentive during class, as this foundational knowledge supports their independent study efforts and collaborative learning with peers.
Engaging in discussions with knowledgeable individuals, such as friends and teachers, is essential for solving English language challenges Taking notes on grammar and pronunciation mistakes can enhance learning Actively applying this knowledge through practice, such as forming study groups, fosters effective communication in English Creating a self-study group allows members to share their difficulties and experiences, improving their listening and speaking skills collaboratively This approach provides a supportive environment, making learning more interactive and beneficial compared to studying alone.
To effectively improve their English vocabulary, students should organize their time wisely and always carry a notebook and dictionary to capitalize on available resources Utilizing "dead" time, such as during commutes, allows them to jot down unfamiliar words encountered on billboards or in conversations with native speakers Making English practice a daily habit is essential, and students must allocate specific time for English learning by prioritizing it over unproductive leisure activities Committing to serious study during English classes also enhances time efficiency and reinforces vocabulary acquisition.
Students should proactively gather and update a diverse range of reference materials, including books, newspapers, and video clips, to enhance their learning resources By collaborating with peers and teachers, and utilizing modern technology, they can expand their knowledge base and avoid complacency with initial successes.
To enhance self-study and English communication skills, students must learn to overcome distractions such as social media and gaming While many students recognize the importance of dedicated study time, they often struggle to resist these temptations To address this issue, it is essential for students to create a balanced timetable that accommodates both study and leisure activities By tailoring their schedules to fit individual needs, students can effectively manage their time and improve their focus on academic tasks.

To create an effective daily timetable, students should balance their modules by considering location, format, and timing, while allowing flexibility for self-study Commitment and perseverance are essential to adhere to this schedule For communicative English, it is recommended to segment self-study into 30-45 minute sessions, conducted 2-3 times a day, incorporating various formats, content, and interaction with different communication partners to enhance engagement and effectiveness.
To successfully learn English, it's essential to change your daily habits and dedicate time each day to practice, just as you would with any other hobby Incorporate English into your routine by reading an English book for at least 30 minutes daily, watching movies, or engaging with friends in English Although it may be challenging to establish these habits, consistent daily practice yields better results than cramming all at once By viewing English as an integral part of your life, you will not only stabilize your learning habits but also enhance your overall lifestyle, leading to greater success in mastering the language.
To effectively evaluate our self-study abilities, it's essential to engage with friends, teachers, and English communication clubs to assess our English proficiency and refine our learning methods Additionally, recognizing improvements in our English skills can serve as motivation for continued progress Conversely, if we fail to meet our goals, implementing self-imposed consequences can help us acknowledge our mistakes and prevent future repetition.
CONCLUSION
English is a West Germanic language from the Indo-European family, originating in early medieval England Its name derives from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that settled in Great Britain Linguistically, English shares close ties with Frisian and Lower Saxon, yet its vocabulary has been significantly shaped by ancient dialects, with approximately 29% derived from both French and Latin, as well as influences from Old Norse affecting its core grammar and vocabulary.
Old English originated from North Sea Germanic dialects spoken by the Anglo-Saxons who migrated to Great Britain in the 5th century, evolving through contact with Old Norse due to Viking influence The Middle English period commenced in the late 11th century following the Norman invasion, characterized by the incorporation of Old French and Latin vocabulary By the late 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, marked by a significant vowel shift and the adoption of Greco-Roman terms during the Renaissance, alongside the advent of the printing press in London This era saw the flourishing of English literature, highlighted by the King James Bible translation and the works of William Shakespeare.
Modern English grammar has evolved from the Indo-European system, transitioning from a dependent-marking structure with rich morphology and flexible word order to a more analytic form characterized by reduced morphological variation and a stricter word order Today, English predominantly utilizes auxiliary verbs and specific word arrangements to convey complex tenses, moods, aspects, and various sentence structures, including passive, interrogative, and negative forms.
Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the influence of the British Empire and the United States This rise has established English as a lingua franca in various fields, including science, navigation, and law Today, English is the most widely spoken language worldwide, with the third largest number of native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish It is also the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Notably, the number of non-native English speakers now surpasses that of native speakers.
As of 2005, the estimated number of English speakers worldwide reached 2 billion, making it the most widely spoken Germanic language English is the primary language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland, and it is also commonly spoken in parts of the Caribbean and Europe, as well as in regions of Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania Additionally, English serves as a co-official language for the United Nations, the European Union, and numerous other international and regional organizations, comprising at least 70% of all speakers of Indo-European languages.
Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can hinder effective communication and understanding Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is essential for successfully acquiring a second language, while Nation (2001) discusses the interdependent relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language use The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students who possess a robust vocabulary tend to perform better Numerous researchers, including Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011), have contributed to the understanding of vocabulary's role in language acquisition.
The acquisition of vocabulary is crucial for effectively using a second language, significantly impacting the creation of coherent spoken and written texts In both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary is vital across all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a comprehensive vocabulary is essential for successful communication; without it, language proficiency suffers Lexical knowledge is fundamental for understanding and fluency, and it remains a major challenge for many learners aiming to communicate effectively in English (Huckin, 1995).
