Reason for choosing the topic

Foreign language majors are becoming essential for fostering international integration and supporting the industrialization and modernization of the country To meet these goals, the education and training sector must undergo significant innovations to produce highly qualified and effective workers Consequently, the teaching and learning of specialized foreign languages at both undergraduate and graduate levels play a crucial role in achieving these objectives.

"bridge" of Vietnam's economy and culture with the outside world.

As the world transitions into a knowledge economy, the 21st century demands a society rooted in knowledge and creative thinking To successfully integrate into the global community, Vietnam must learn from the experiences of advanced nations while creatively applying these lessons to its unique circumstances With the rapid evolution of social knowledge, workers are required to continuously update their skills and knowledge to align with advancements in science and technology It is essential for them to take initiative in their personal and professional development to meet the evolving demands of society This article addresses the critical issues surrounding specialized foreign languages, particularly in the fields of science and technology, and emphasizes the need for effective teaching and learning strategies to support Vietnam's integration process.

Structure of the lesson

CHAPTER 2: THE STATUS OF LEARNING VOCABULARY OF THU DAU UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

English is a West Germanic language from the Indo-European family, originating from early medieval England Its name derives from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain Linguistically, English is closely related to Frisian and Lower Saxon, yet its vocabulary has been significantly shaped by influences from French and Latin, each contributing approximately 29%, as well as Old Norse, which has impacted its core grammar and vocabulary over the centuries.

Old English, derived from North Sea Germanic dialects, emerged with the Anglo-Saxon migration to Great Britain in the 5th century, evolving through interactions with Old Norse during the Viking era The Middle English period commenced in the late 11th century, influenced significantly by Old French and Latin following the Norman invasion By the late 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, characterized by a major vowel shift and an influx of Greco-Roman vocabulary during the Renaissance This era also saw the rise of English literature, highlighted by the King James Bible translation and the works of William Shakespeare.

Modern English grammar has evolved from the Indo-European system's dependent-marking structure, characterized by rich morphology and flexible word order, to a more analytic form with reduced morphological variation and a stricter word order This transformation emphasizes the use of auxiliary verbs and fixed word arrangements to convey complex tenses, moods, and aspects, along with passive, interrogative, and negative constructions.

Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the British Empire and the United States, becoming a key lingua franca in various professional fields, including science, navigation, and law It is the most widely spoken language worldwide, with the third largest number of native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish Additionally, English is the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Today, the number of non-native English speakers has surpassed that of native speakers.

As of 2005, there are approximately 2 billion English speakers worldwide English is the primary language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland, and it is also prevalent in parts of the Caribbean and Europe, as well as in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania Additionally, English serves as a co-official language in significant international organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union, making it the most widely spoken Germanic language, representing over 70% of all speakers of Indo-European languages.

Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can impede effective communication and comprehension Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is essential for mastering a second language, while Nation (2001) discusses the reciprocal relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language use The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students often achieve a substantial grasp of vocabulary Numerous researchers, including Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011), have contributed to this understanding.

Acquiring vocabulary is crucial for effectively using a second language, as it significantly impacts the ability to create coherent spoken and written texts In both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary plays a vital role across all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a comprehensive vocabulary is essential for successful communication in a second language, as a lack of vocabulary hinders understanding Lexical knowledge is fundamental for effective communication, and overcoming vocabulary limitations is often the greatest challenge for learners striving for fluency in English (Huckin, 1995).

3 The role of learning English vocabulary.

A robust English vocabulary enhances communication skills and enriches self-expression Mastery of a wide range of English words allows individuals to convey their thoughts and intentions with precision Conversely, a limited vocabulary restricts one’s ability to articulate ideas effectively.

A strong vocabulary is essential for enhancing English language skills, as it enables effective communication and the clear expression of ideas Mastering vocabulary facilitates the natural and efficient application of the four core skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

To effectively learn English, it is crucial to first establish a strong vocabulary foundation By focusing on building this essential "root," learners can enhance their overall language competence and achieve their desired proficiency more efficiently.

Studies indicate that proficiency in English significantly enhances individuals' academic success, career opportunities, and business prospects Research shows a strong correlation between English language skills and higher income, increased travel opportunities, and greater success in commercial ventures This trend is largely attributed to English being the world's most widely used language.

There are more than 400 million people who use English as their first language, more than 1 billion people who use English as a second language.

English has the largest vocabulary of all languages with over 500,000 words in the Oxford Dictionary.

As the language of science, technology and business, English vocabulary is adding more and more new words.

The countries with high per capita income in the world are all fluent in English, mother tongue or school.

Mastering English is essential for success in any career, including informatics, engineering, tourism, and business administration In today's globalized market, particularly in Vietnam, effective communication in English with international clients and suppliers is crucial A strong command of English not only enhances professional opportunities but also distinguishes you from peers It's important to recognize that a basic knowledge of English is insufficient for building international relationships Your proficiency in English will influence how others perceive your value, as fluency reflects confidence and professionalism Clear pronunciation, concise communication, and an understanding of nuances in language and humor are vital for making a lasting impression in the professional world.

Mastering English significantly enhances your chances of securing graduate opportunities and gaining acceptance into advanced training programs at international universities Today's young intellectuals benefit from numerous student exchange and research cooperation initiatives Additionally, proficiency in English broadens access to vital news, information, and knowledge, as over 90% of How-To articles are primarily available in English By dedicating time to explore English resources, you can effectively teach yourself a wide range of skills.

5 English towards the ASEAN community.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), established on December 31, 2015, unites 10 member states, significantly impacting Vietnam's labor market and labor movement trends This integration facilitates a common market where Vietnamese goods can circulate freely within Southeast Asia, and businesses from the region can invest in Vietnam Workers across ASEAN can now seek employment in any member country, which helps reduce unemployment and opens up ideal job opportunities for Vietnamese workers, particularly students However, this also poses challenges in terms of competition with higher-quality labor from other ASEAN nations Notably, eight professions—including accountants, engineers, and nurses—are now allowed to move freely across the region, with expectations for this list to expand Despite abundant labor resources in ASEAN, disparities in human resource quality and integration readiness persist, with countries like Singapore and Malaysia benefiting from early adoption of English as a second language In Vietnam, high-skilled professions face risks from this influx of quality labor, making it essential for young workers to enhance their English proficiency to remain competitive A recent survey revealed that 41% of FDI business representatives struggled to find qualified mid-level and high-level Vietnamese employees due to insufficient English skills Consequently, English proficiency has become a critical criterion for recruitment, with skilled English-speaking middle managers commanding salaries between $2,500 to $4,000 per month, while those lacking language skills earn significantly less.

The Trans-Pacific Economic Partnership (TPP) offers significant opportunities for Vietnamese workers, yet many lack the necessary English proficiency to capitalize on these prospects During recruitment, while candidates often excel in technical knowledge and enthusiasm, approximately 75% struggle with English communication during interviews This gap is attributed to a lack of emphasis on English language skills in education, with many students focusing solely on passing exams like TOEIC rather than developing practical listening and speaking abilities As globalization continues to break down barriers, the demand for English proficiency is rising, leading to the proliferation of language centers However, true improvement in English skills hinges on individual employees recognizing the value of foreign language competence and actively seeking effective methods to enhance their abilities, ultimately boosting their career prospects and competitiveness in the labor market.

6 A brief overview of the current state of English vocabulary learning of all students.

THEORETICAL BASIS

The concept of English

English is a West Germanic language from the Indo-European family, originating in early medieval England Its name is derived from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain While closely related to Frisian and Lower Saxon, English has evolved significantly over time, with approximately 29% of its modern vocabulary influenced by French and Latin, alongside contributions from Old Norse that have shaped its core grammar and vocabulary.

Old English, derived from North Sea Germanic dialects, emerged with the Anglo-Saxon migration to Great Britain in the 5th century and evolved through contact with Old Norse due to Viking settlers The Middle English period began in the late 11th century, influenced significantly by Old French and Latin following the Norman invasion By the late 15th century, English transitioned into the modern era, marked by a vowel shift and an influx of Greco-Roman vocabulary during the Renaissance This period also saw the rise of English literature, highlighted by the King James Bible translation and the works of William Shakespeare.

Modern English grammar has evolved from the Indo-European system's dependent-marking structure, characterized by rich morphological variation and flexible word order, to a more analytic form with reduced morphological complexity and a stricter word order Today, English relies significantly on auxiliary verbs and specific word arrangements to convey complex tenses, moods, aspects, and various structures such as passive, interrogative, and negative forms.

Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the influence of the British Empire and the United States It has become a lingua franca in various professional fields, including science, navigation, and law, thanks to its widespread use in print and mass media English is the most widely spoken language globally and ranks third in native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish Additionally, it is the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Notably, the number of individuals speaking English as a foreign language now exceeds that of native speakers.

As of 2005, the number of English speakers globally is estimated to be around 2 billion English serves as the primary language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland, and is also prevalent in parts of the Caribbean and Europe, as well as regions in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania Recognized as a co-official language by the United Nations, the European Union, and various other international organizations, English stands out as the most widely spoken Germanic language, representing at least 70% of all speakers of Indo-European languages.

What is vocabulary?

Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can impede effective communication Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is essential for mastering a second language, while Nation (2001) emphasizes the interconnectedness of vocabulary knowledge and language use The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students often struggle to acquire a comprehensive vocabulary Numerous researchers, including Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011), have contributed to this understanding, underscoring the necessity of vocabulary acquisition for language proficiency.

The acquisition of vocabulary is crucial for effectively using a second language, significantly impacting the ability to create coherent spoken and written texts In both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary is vital across all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a comprehensive vocabulary is essential for successful communication, as a lack of vocabulary can hinder understanding Lexical knowledge is a key factor in fluency, and insufficient vocabulary remains a major challenge for learners aiming to communicate effectively in English (Huckin, 1995).

The role of learning English vocabulary

Expanding your English vocabulary enhances communication skills and enriches self-expression A robust vocabulary allows you to convey your thoughts and intentions with clarity and precision Conversely, a limited vocabulary restricts your ability to articulate ideas effectively, leaving you with fewer means to express yourself.

A strong vocabulary is essential for enhancing English language skills, as it enables effective communication and the clear expression of ideas Mastering vocabulary naturally facilitates the development and application of the four key skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, leading to improved proficiency and efficiency in language use.

To effectively learn English, it is essential to first establish a strong vocabulary foundation By building this "root" of vocabulary, learners can enhance their overall English proficiency and achieve their desired language goals more efficiently.

Importance of English

Research indicates that proficiency in English significantly enhances individuals' academic success, career growth, and business opportunities Studies reveal a strong correlation between English language skills and higher income, increased travel opportunities, and commercial success This trend underscores the importance of English as the world's most widely used language.

Mastering English is essential for success in any career, whether in informatics, engineering, tourism, or business administration Strong English communication skills set you apart in a competitive professional landscape, especially in Vietnam, where interactions with international clients and suppliers are conducted exclusively in English Proficiency in English not only facilitates faster and more accurate communication but is also crucial for establishing credibility and fostering international relationships A basic understanding of English is insufficient; true professionalism in the language is vital Your English proficiency influences how others perceive your value, with clear pronunciation, concise communication, and an understanding of nuances and humor significantly enhancing your professional image and leaving a lasting impression.

Mastering English significantly enhances your prospects for graduate opportunities and acceptance into advanced training programs at international universities Today's young scholars benefit from a growing number of student exchanges and research collaborations Additionally, proficiency in English broadens access to a wealth of news, information, and knowledge, as over 90% of How-To articles are available primarily in English With dedication, you can self-teach various skills by exploring English-language resources.

English towards the ASEAN community

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), established on December 31, 2015, unites ten ASEAN member states into a common economic bloc, significantly impacting Vietnam's labor market and labor movement trends This integration allows Vietnamese goods to circulate freely within the region, while also attracting investments from other ASEAN countries Workers across ASEAN can now move freely for employment, which helps reduce unemployment and presents numerous job opportunities for Vietnamese workers, especially students However, this also poses challenges in terms of competition with skilled labor from countries like Singapore and Malaysia, where English proficiency is high Currently, eight professions, including engineers and nurses, can move freely within the region, and this list is expected to expand Vietnamese workers must enhance their English skills to compete effectively, as recent surveys indicate that 41% of FDI businesses struggle to find qualified mid-level and senior employees due to inadequate English proficiency Consequently, quality human resources in Vietnam are dwindling, with bilingual middle managers commanding salaries between $2,500 to $4,000 per month, compared to only 15-20 million VND for those lacking language skills.

The rise of the AEC and TPP presents numerous opportunities for Vietnamese workers, yet a significant challenge remains: many employees lack sufficient English proficiency During recruitment, while candidates may excel in their technical skills and enthusiasm, approximately 75% struggle with English during interviews Most can only manage basic self-introductions or translate a fraction of professional documents Reasons for this deficiency include a lack of emphasis on English in education, competing academic pressures, and a focus on passing tests like TOEIC rather than developing practical language skills As globalization continues to eliminate barriers, the demand for English proficiency grows, driving the popularity of language centers However, true improvement in English skills hinges on individual employees recognizing the importance of language proficiency for career advancement and competitiveness in the evolving labor market.

A brief overview of the English vocabulary learning status of all students

Before conducting a research survey on how students learn English vocabulary, I noticed that their vocabulary was quite limited, particularly when engaging with foreign experts My observations revealed that only about 10% of students could speak English fluently, with a mere 2% demonstrating a solid understanding of the language This situation is concerning for our school, especially given that English is the global lingua franca In the context of international economic integration, students represent a vital source of knowledge and potential; however, their lack of foreign language skills presents a significant barrier to learning from international peers and gaining new insights to contribute to national development.

Many students struggle with English vocabulary, which they find particularly challenging due to the complexity of translating not just words but also their various forms and uses This difficulty is compounded by their limited exposure to English, as most of their environment is predominantly Vietnamese, both in school and in part-time jobs Although students participate in extracurricular English classes, the short duration often leads to quick learning followed by forgetfulness, as they may not use new vocabulary frequently This cycle of learning and forgetting is time-consuming and ineffective, prompting the need for a survey on vocabulary acquisition among English majors The goal is to identify effective learning strategies that can benefit students across all majors, fostering progress and enabling communication without language barriers on an international scale.

Methods of implementation

The survey method is to create a survey form and print the survey form on A4 paper with 200 survey sheets Take surveys directly from students in the English language major

In the initial phase of the survey, I pinpointed the challenges faced by students I conducted 200 survey forms, asking participants to select the single most significant obstacle that hinders their ability to study effectively The results of this survey were then compiled for analysis.

Students face various challenges in learning English vocabulary, which can be categorized into five main groups First, many struggle with the sheer volume of new words, leading to feelings of overwhelm Second, a lack of effective memorization techniques hinders their ability to retain vocabulary Third, insufficient exposure to English in real-life contexts limits practical usage and understanding Fourth, students often encounter difficulties with pronunciation and spelling, creating barriers to communication Lastly, motivational issues and a lack of confidence can impede their progress in mastering English vocabulary.

SOLUTION

Group of solutions about the environment outside of school hours

Engaging in extracurricular activities such as clubs, associations, and English contests outside of school hours provides students with a valuable environment to enhance their English vocabulary These activities not only foster active language improvement but also immerse students in real-life English situations, accelerating their learning and retention of vocabulary To further enrich this environment and optimize learning opportunities for students, I propose several effective solutions.

Firstly, create opportunities for students to collide and interact with real-life situations with native speakers: The best way to learn English effectively is to practice

To enhance listening skills in language learning, it is essential for students to regularly expose their ears to English through daily practice and interaction with native speakers Engaging with foreigners not only improves listening comprehension but also boosts speaking and pronunciation abilities over time This consistent practice is particularly beneficial in today's interconnected economy, where opportunities for studying abroad, cultural exchanges, and travel abound.

To enhance English language training for students, it is essential to organize engaging activities that promote active practice of their skills Initiatives such as English Olympiads, singing contests, and speech competitions, along with campaigns focused on learning English in the context of the ASEAN community, should be implemented regularly These dynamic and varied activities will foster vitality, passion, and enthusiasm among students, motivating them to continuously improve their English proficiency Additionally, the diversity and flexibility of these events will create optimal conditions for English majors to excel.

Infrastructure solutions

English learning resources in libraries are underutilized by students due to their lack of diversity and accessibility, encompassing not only English learning methods but also foreign language materials Additionally, the absence of dedicated English classrooms and extracurricular activities, such as English clubs, hampers the learning experience To address these issues, it is essential to redesign and upgrade English teaching spaces, ensuring regular maintenance of teaching equipment, particularly sound systems, to enhance clarity and engagement during lessons Well-functioning audio-visual equipment enriches the learning environment and fosters better retention among students Moreover, integrating essential teaching aids like illustrations and vocabulary cards can make lessons more dynamic and engaging Classrooms should be equipped with movable furniture arranged scientifically to promote comfort and facilitate effective learning Limiting class sizes to a maximum of 15 students will encourage meaningful interaction between teachers and students, ultimately enhancing the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Create a dedicated self-study space for students to enhance their English skills, featuring comfortable areas for relaxation and communication practice This space should include activities such as reading, topic-based discussions, TOEIC testing, movie watching, karaoke, vocabulary games, and thematic talks with experienced lecturers and proficient students Collaborate with English clubs and foreign volunteers to foster a friendly exchange environment, promoting enthusiasm for English among students Additionally, install free wireless fiber optic Internet to provide students with flexible study options.

To enhance student learning, the library should enrich its collection with a diverse range of English books tailored to key majors like business administration, accounting, and finance, while also making resources available for students from other disciplines This approach will help diversify learning materials, supporting students in their English language studies Additionally, providing access to free educational websites and installing more high-speed internet-connected computers will facilitate online research, viewing English learning videos, and downloading listening lessons Furthermore, increasing the number of tables and chairs will create a conducive environment for individual reading, group discussions, and collaborative practice in English.

Group of solutions about the environment inside the classroom

Students generally rate the classroom environment poorly, with many factors falling below average In English lessons, Vietnamese remains the primary language of instruction, limiting the effectiveness of these classes Additionally, the current curriculum does not adequately focus on enhancing students' English learning skills, resulting in knowledge that is only understood at a cognitive level rather than being practically applied To address these issues, several solutions have been proposed.

Teachers can effectively implement the compulsory practice method by consistently using English in the classroom, which encourages students to actively listen and interpret the language This approach necessitates patience and synchronous implementation among all lecturers, ensuring that students do not have the option to choose their instructors during course registration Transitioning to an English-only teaching environment requires a gradual roadmap, as immediate implementation can lead to confusion and hinder students' understanding of the material being taught.

The school should develop a strategic plan to transition from using Vietnamese to English in teaching, allowing students ample time to adjust and cultivate a positive attitude towards English classes Additionally, implementing short training sessions for lecturers is essential to enhance their communication skills, enabling them to effectively share teaching experiences and collaborate with foreign educators.

Students should recognize the significance of actively preparing for lessons before attending class Dedicating time to practice English at home enhances their mood and boosts confidence, leading to a more engaged and proactive learning experience This preparation helps avoid a passive approach to education and encourages effective coping strategies during lessons.

Regular engagement in English lessons enhances students' Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills, facilitating effective communication and retention of vocabulary Consistent practice boosts confidence in expressing thoughts in English, while corrective feedback from teachers improves pronunciation Additionally, students learn to emphasize sounds in sentences and expand their vocabulary by mimicking the teacher's pronunciation and word usage.

This effective solution enhances students' English vocabulary skills by encouraging them to prepare thoroughly before class and remain focused during lessons to fully understand the material presented by the teacher.

Teachers should implement strategies to encourage student practice, such as introducing a mandatory scoring system for group activities that involve communicating in English By assigning relevant topics for each lesson, educators can motivate students to engage actively during class Incorporating real-life communication scenarios is essential for creating an engaging learning environment that captures students' attention This approach allows students to immediately apply newly acquired knowledge, enhancing retention and understanding of vocabulary, pronunciation, and contextual usage Additionally, the chosen scenarios should facilitate the application of both new concepts and previous lessons, helping students build a cohesive knowledge system and improve their memorization skills beyond textbook learning.

The English language program emphasizes practical usage, catering to learners who often begin with specific goals in mind, typically starting with a general English curriculum aimed at facilitating basic communication on everyday topics Since the 1960s, there has been a notable emergence of English teaching programs tailored to meet the unique needs of individual learners, leading to the development of English for Specific Purposes (ESP).

The global demand for scientific, technical, and economic exchange has positioned English as the primary language of communication This shift, coupled with advancements in industry, has propelled the field of Linguistics forward, particularly in the area of English for Special Purposes (ESP) As a result, ESP has gained significant traction among researchers and translators focused on developing effective teaching materials.

At the outset of the English program for Spoken English students, it is essential to prioritize general business communication to enhance English proficiency and familiarize students with economic and commercial terminology, as well as essential communication skills in a business context, aligning with the school's output standards and TOEIC requirements Subsequently, to address students' needs for specialized reading materials, the curriculum must incorporate ESAP (English for Specific Academic Purposes), which encompasses the necessary language structure, vocabulary, terminology, and specific skills tailored to their field of study, focusing on realistic professional scenarios that students will encounter.

To enhance language proficiency and study skills, I propose a two-part curriculum structure The first segment will focus on general English, building on the advanced General Business English program, while the second segment will cater to students' specific majors, emphasizing reading comprehension and specialized terminology This approach will involve collaborative teams of lecturers who will design the curriculum and teaching materials, analyze the language pertinent to each major, and work with specialized instructors to ensure content relevance This model not only clarifies the role of language teachers but also addresses the necessity of teaching specialized English effectively.

At the same time limit the study of knowledge that overlaps with what was learned in the general education program.

Incorporating a variety of images and video clips into lessons significantly enhances students' understanding of native speakers' cultural communication, including gestures and contextual word usage This dynamic approach goes beyond traditional lectures, fostering engagement and excitement in the classroom By integrating visual aids during instruction, teachers can effectively illustrate new concepts, making learning more impactful It is essential for educators to invest time in sourcing relevant visuals or encouraging students to find clips related to upcoming lessons As students take an active role in lesson preparation, they become more invested and motivated, ultimately improving their listening skills and reinforcing their learning outcomes.

To enhance learning, it's crucial to immediately apply acquired knowledge to real-life classroom situations This approach not only provides practical experience but also allows for corrections in pronunciation, intonation, and mannerisms By doing so, students can foster their creativity, actively choose suitable vocabulary and sentence structures, and gain deeper insights from peers and teachers.

Using diverse grammar examples enhances retention and application in communication Educators should encourage students to practice grammar through speaking, writing, and analyzing texts rather than relying solely on multiple-choice questions This approach promotes critical thinking and cognitive engagement, leading to improved memory Additionally, fostering collaboration among students in learning English grammar can create a more engaging and effective practice environment.

The curriculum should be regularly updated to enhance students' English vocabulary learning and ensure a balanced practice of all four skills, with a particular focus on communication To align with these objectives, it is recommended to adjust the assessment ratio to 50/50, reflecting both vocabulary acquisition and overall English proficiency in final evaluations This approach aims to alleviate pressure on students and educators regarding classroom demands and exam preparation, while promoting fairness in English learning outcomes across various disciplines within the faculty.

Solution group on students' self-study ability

Self-study plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of learning and training, serving as a pathway to success It enables students to stay current with knowledge, particularly in English, and fosters the development of innovative learning methods With a strong desire to learn anytime and anywhere, students who embrace self-study can significantly improve their academic performance Achieving success in education and effective communication in English necessitates the ability to self-study, engage in research, and explore new concepts for personal growth and development.

Despite achieving only above-average assessment scores, students at the Faculty of English Language recognize the importance of setting goals to enhance their English communication skills and actively seek diverse learning resources However, there is a need to focus on improving three key areas Additionally, students' current learning methods are limited and often ineffective, with insufficient time dedicated to self-study beyond formal English modules To address these challenges and build on their strengths, students should consider implementing specific strategies for improvement.

To succeed in self-studying English, believe in your abilities and utilize both your internal resources and the guidance of your lecturers Establish clear objectives and motivation for learning, setting small, achievable goals that align with the SMART criteria: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound For instance, to reach a TOEIC score of 450 within six months, commit to learning at least 10 new vocabulary words daily, practice listening skills through dialogues on platforms like YouTube, and make these practices a daily habit Additionally, regularly review grammar and take online tests to assess your progress.

Students must take their English vocabulary goals seriously and actively work to enhance their learning abilities To stay motivated, they can engage in enjoyable activities, such as organizing games that promote English communication, like listening to guessing clips or creating vocabulary lists on specific topics Additionally, changing their study environment—such as studying in a park or at a friend's house—can boost their enthusiasm and energy levels Recognizing the importance of motivation in learning English is crucial, as it significantly influences their ability to adhere to their self-study schedules and plans.

To effectively enhance English vocabulary acquisition, students should create a tailored study plan and manage it diligently This plan should outline the learning process and incorporate various methods, such as focusing on specific topics or fields of interest Utilizing the SQ3R technique—Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review—can help in efficiently summarizing and retaining important information Additionally, students should actively engage during class to build a solid foundation for independent study, collaborating with study groups to reinforce and fully comprehend the material covered.

To enhance your English skills, consistently engage in discussions with knowledgeable individuals such as friends and teachers, and take notes to avoid common mistakes in grammar and pronunciation Actively apply what you've learned by practicing communication in study groups, fostering a collaborative environment where members can share their challenges in listening and speaking Forming a self-study group with peers allows for valuable exchanges of experiences and strategies, ultimately improving everyone's English communication skills This collaborative approach provides the benefit of having an audience for practice, making the learning process more effective than studying alone.

To effectively improve English vocabulary, students should organize their time wisely by always carrying a notebook and dictionary to utilize available resources They can make the most of "dead" time by noting unfamiliar words encountered in everyday situations, such as billboards or conversations with native speakers Establishing a daily routine that prioritizes English practice is essential, requiring students to exchange leisure time for focused study and communication in English Additionally, dedicating serious effort during English classes enhances time management and learning outcomes.

Students should actively update and gather a diverse range of reference materials, including books, newspapers, and multimedia resources By collecting documents from peers and teachers, and utilizing modern technology, they can enhance their learning experience This proactive approach helps prevent reliance on limited resources and encourages continuous growth beyond initial accomplishments.

To enhance self-study and English communication skills, students must overcome distractions from social media and games While many students recognize the importance of dedicated study time, temptations can hinder their focus To combat this, it's essential for students to create a balanced timetable that accommodates both study and leisure activities Tailoring a schedule to fit individual needs can help maintain this balance effectively.

Work content Time to do the job

Wake up, do personal hygiene, have breakfast and go to school.

Self-study English (at home or elsewhere) 13:40 14:30

To effectively manage their studies, students should create a balanced timetable that considers module locations, formats, and timings, allowing for flexible self-study periods It is essential to have the determination and perseverance to adhere to this schedule For communicative English, it is recommended to break self-study sessions into 30-45 minute intervals, engaging in 2-3 sessions daily with varied content and activities Incorporating different communication scenarios will enhance the learning experience and keep self-study engaging.

To successfully learn English, you must change your daily habits and dedicate time to practice, just as you do with your other hobbies Incorporate English into your routine by watching movies, browsing the web, or reading an English book for at least 30 minutes each day Consistent, daily practice is more effective than cramming all your studies into one month, and engaging in activities like listening to English and conversing with friends will help solidify your learning By viewing English as an essential part of your life, you’ll create a sustainable lifestyle that fosters success in your language journey.

To effectively evaluate our self-study abilities, it's essential to engage with friends, teachers, and English communication clubs to assess our English proficiency This feedback can lead to more effective learning strategies Additionally, recognizing improvements in our English skills can serve as motivation for further development Conversely, if we fail to meet our goals, implementing self-imposed consequences can help us acknowledge our mistakes and prevent them from recurring.

CONCLUSION

English is a West Germanic language within the Indo-European family, originating from the early medieval inhabitants of England Its name derives from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain English shares close linguistic ties with Frisian and Lower Saxon, but its vocabulary has evolved significantly over time, incorporating influences from French and Latin, each contributing approximately 29% to modern English, alongside Old Norse impacts on its core grammar and vocabulary.

Old English emerged from the North Sea Germanic dialects spoken by the Anglo-Saxons who migrated to Great Britain in the 5th century, evolving through contact with Old Norse due to Viking influence The Middle English period began in the late 11th century following the Norman invasion, introducing significant Old French and Latin influences By the late 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, characterized by a major vowel shift and an influx of Greco-Roman vocabulary during the Renaissance This era saw a flourishing of English literature, highlighted by the translation of the Bible under King James I and the iconic plays of William Shakespeare.

Modern English grammar has evolved from the Indo-European system, which featured rich morphological variation and flexible word order, to a more analytic structure with reduced morphological variation and a more fixed word order This transformation has led to a reliance on auxiliary verbs and specific word arrangements to convey complex tenses, moods, aspects, and various sentence structures, including passive and interrogative forms, as well as negatives.

Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the influence of the British Empire and the United States This widespread use has established English as a lingua franca in various fields such as science, navigation, and law Today, English is the most widely spoken language worldwide, ranking third in native speakers after Standard Chinese and Spanish It is also the most commonly learned foreign language, serving as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Notably, the number of non-native English speakers now surpasses that of native speakers.

As of 2005, approximately 2 billion people speak English, making it the most widely spoken Germanic language It is the primary language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland, and is also prevalent in parts of the Caribbean and Europe, as well as regions in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania English serves as a co-official language for major international organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union, and constitutes at least 70% of all speakers of Indo-European languages.

Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can impede successful language acquisition Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is essential for effectively acquiring a second language, while Nation (2001) discusses the interdependent relationship between vocabulary knowledge and language use The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students strive to achieve comprehensive vocabulary mastery Numerous researchers, including Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011), have contributed to this understanding.

The acquisition of vocabulary is crucial for effectively using a second language, significantly impacting the development of coherent spoken and written texts In both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary plays a vital role across all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a comprehensive vocabulary is essential for successful communication, as a lack of vocabulary hinders fluency Proficiency in a second language heavily relies on lexical knowledge, which is often the primary challenge for learners striving to achieve fluency in English (Huckin, 1995).

3 The role of learning English vocabulary.

A robust English vocabulary enhances communication skills and boosts self-expression The significance of English words lies in their ability to convey intentions with precision Having an extensive vocabulary allows you to articulate your thoughts clearly, while a limited vocabulary restricts your ability to express yourself effectively.

A strong vocabulary is essential for enhancing English language skills, as it enables effective and coherent communication Mastering vocabulary allows individuals to express their ideas clearly and fully With a rich vocabulary, the application of the four key skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—becomes more natural and efficient.

To effectively learn English, it is crucial to first establish a strong vocabulary foundation By prioritizing vocabulary development, learners can enhance their overall English proficiency and achieve their language goals more efficiently.

Research indicates that proficiency in English significantly enhances academic success, career advancement, and business opportunities Studies reveal a strong correlation between English language skills and higher income, increased travel opportunities, and commercial success This trend is largely attributed to English being the most widely spoken language globally.

Mastering English is essential for success in any career, including informatics, engineering, tourism, and business administration Strong English communication skills enhance your competitiveness in the professional landscape, especially in Vietnam, where interactions with international clients and suppliers predominantly occur in English It's crucial to excel beyond basic language proficiency; true professionalism in English significantly impacts your career development and international relations When engaging with foreigners, your English proficiency will shape their perception of your value Clear articulation, confidence, accurate descriptions, standard pronunciation, and an understanding of nuance and humor all contribute to your professional image, making a lasting impression.

Mastering English significantly enhances graduate opportunities and access to advanced training programs at international universities, while also facilitating participation in student exchanges and research collaborations Furthermore, proficiency in English broadens access to a wealth of news and information, as over 90% of How-To articles are primarily available in English With dedication to exploring English resources, individuals can effectively self-teach a variety of skills.

5 English towards the ASEAN community.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), established on December 31, 2015, unites 10 ASEAN member states, significantly impacting Vietnam's labor market and labor movement trends This integration fosters a common market where Vietnamese goods can circulate freely among Southeast Asian countries, while also attracting investments from regional businesses Workers across the ASEAN bloc can now move freely, reducing unemployment and presenting Vietnamese workers, especially students, with numerous job opportunities However, this also introduces challenges regarding competitiveness, particularly against higher-quality labor from countries like Singapore and Malaysia, where English proficiency is more prevalent Notably, eight professions, including engineering and healthcare, are set for free movement under ASEAN agreements, yet a skills gap remains A recent Navigos Search survey revealed that 41% of FDI businesses struggle to find qualified Vietnamese employees due to insufficient English skills Consequently, young Vietnamese workers must enhance their English proficiency to thrive in the evolving labor market, as those proficient in English command significantly higher salaries compared to their counterparts with limited language skills.

The Trans-Pacific Economic Partnership (TPP) presents numerous opportunities for Vietnamese workers, yet many lack the necessary English proficiency to capitalize on them While candidates often demonstrate strong technical skills and enthusiasm, approximately 75% struggle during English interviews, with the best candidates only able to introduce themselves or translate basic documents Reasons for this deficiency include a lack of emphasis on English in their education and a focus on passing exams like TOEIC rather than developing practical language skills These challenges hinder job prospects for Vietnamese workers and students As globalization continues to remove barriers, the importance of English as a competitive skill grows, leading to a rise in English centers However, true improvement in English proficiency hinges on individual awareness of its value and a commitment to acquiring the language, which is essential for enhancing career prospects and the overall competitiveness of Vietnamese youth in the labor market.
