CHAPTER 2: THE STATUS OF LEARNING VOCABULARY OF THU DAU UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
English is a West Germanic language that belongs to the Indo-European family, with its earliest form spoken in medieval England The name "English" derives from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain Linguistically, English is closely related to Frisian and Lower Saxon, but its vocabulary has evolved significantly over time, incorporating influences from French and Latin, each contributing approximately 29% to modern English, along with Old Norse, which has impacted its core grammar and vocabulary.
Old English emerged from the North Sea Germanic dialects spoken by the Anglo-Saxons who migrated to Great Britain in the 5th century, evolving through contact with Old Norse due to Viking settlers The Middle English period began in the late 11th century, influenced significantly by Old French and Latin following the Norman invasion By the end of the 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, marked by a major vowel shift and an influx of Greco-Roman vocabulary during the Renaissance, alongside the advent of the printing press in London This era saw a flourishing of English literature, highlighted by the translation of the Bible under King James I and the works of William Shakespeare.
Modern English grammar has evolved from the Indo-European system, transitioning from a dependent-marking structure with rich morphological variation and flexible word order to a more analytic form This modern structure features reduced morphological variation and a more fixed word order Today, English grammar relies significantly on auxiliary verbs and specific word arrangements to convey complex tenses, moods, aspects, as well as passive, interrogative, and negative forms.
Since the 17th century, Modern English has gained global prominence due to the influence of the British Empire and the United States This widespread adoption has established English as a lingua franca in various professional fields, including science, navigation, and law It is now the most widely spoken language globally, with the third largest number of native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish Furthermore, English is the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Notably, the number of individuals who speak English as a foreign language has surpassed that of native speakers.
As of 2005, approximately 2 billion people speak English, making it the predominant language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland Additionally, English is widely spoken across parts of the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania It serves as a co-official language for major organizations like the United Nations and the European Union, and it stands as the most widely spoken Germanic language, representing over 70% of all Indo-European language speakers.
Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for second language learners, as a limited vocabulary can impede successful language acquisition Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is fundamental to mastering a second language, while Nation (2001) emphasizes the interdependence of vocabulary knowledge and language use This relationship is evident both in and outside the classroom, where students progressively enhance their vocabulary Research by Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011) underscores the significance of vocabulary acquisition in language learning.
The acquisition of vocabulary is crucial for effectively using a second language, significantly impacting the formation of coherent spoken and written texts In both English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary plays a vital role across all language competencies, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a robust vocabulary is essential for successful communication, as a lack of vocabulary can hinder fluency Lexical knowledge is fundamental for effective communication, and it often presents the greatest challenge for learners striving to achieve fluency in English (Huckin, 1995).
3 The role of learning English vocabulary.
A rich English vocabulary enhances communication skills and boosts self-expression The significance of English words lies in their ability to convey intentions clearly With an extensive vocabulary, you can articulate your thoughts precisely; however, a limited vocabulary restricts your ability to express yourself effectively.

A brief overview of the English vocabulary learning status of all students
A recent survey on students' English vocabulary revealed concerning results, highlighting that only about 10% of students can speak English fluently, with a mere 2% demonstrating smooth comprehension This limited proficiency poses a significant challenge for our school, especially as English is the global lingua franca essential for international communication In the context of global economic integration, the youth, particularly students, represent a vital source of knowledge and potential However, the lack of foreign language skills remains a major barrier, hindering their ability to learn from and collaborate with peers in more developed nations, ultimately affecting the country's progress and development.
Many students at the school struggle with English vocabulary, which they find to be the most challenging aspect of learning the language This difficulty arises not just from translating words from Vietnamese to English, but also from mastering the various forms such as adjectives, verbs, and nouns within appropriate contexts Their limited exposure to English, primarily in a Vietnamese-speaking environment, hinders their learning Although they attend extra-curricular English classes, the short duration often leads to quick learning followed by forgetfulness, making the learning process inefficient To address this issue, I plan to conduct a survey on vocabulary acquisition among English major students to understand their learning strategies and to facilitate collaborative progress across different majors, ultimately aiming to eliminate language barriers and enhance international communication.
Methods of implementation
The survey method is to create a survey form and print the survey form on A4 paper with 200 survey sheets Take surveys directly from students in the English language major

SOLUTION
Group of solutions about the environment outside of school hours
Engaging in extracurricular activities such as clubs, associations, and English contests outside of school hours significantly enhances students' vocabulary acquisition These environments provide opportunities for active language use and regular interaction with native speakers, which accelerates the learning and retention of English vocabulary To further improve these outside-of-school environments, I propose implementing targeted solutions that foster greater student engagement and interaction with the language.
Firstly, create opportunities for students to collide and interact with real-life situations with native speakers: The best way to learn English effectively is to practice
To enhance listening skills in English, it is essential to immerse oneself in the language daily, allowing the ear to adapt to its sounds Engaging with native speakers provides invaluable practice and significantly boosts both listening and speaking abilities As students consistently expose themselves to English, their pronunciation and conversational skills improve, which is crucial in today’s global economy This practice opens up numerous opportunities for interaction with foreigners through studying abroad, cultural exchanges, and travel.
To enhance English language training for students, it is essential to organize engaging activities that promote active practice of their skills Initiatives such as English Olympiads, singing contests, and speech competitions, along with campaigns aimed at fostering English learning within the ASEAN community, should be held regularly These events not only infuse vitality and excitement into the learning process but also encourage students to take the initiative in improving their English proficiency Additionally, a diverse range of activities, adaptable in scope, will provide optimal opportunities for English majors to thrive.
Infrastructure solutions
English learning resources in libraries are often underappreciated by students due to their lack of diversity and accessibility, including not only English learning methods but also foreign language materials Additionally, the absence of dedicated English classrooms and extracurricular activities, such as English clubs, hinders the learning experience To improve this situation, I propose several solutions: first, redesign and upgrade classrooms specifically for English learning, ensuring regular maintenance of teaching equipment, particularly sound systems, to enhance auditory and visual experiences Well-functioning equipment is crucial for maintaining student engagement and minimizing disruptions caused by technical issues Furthermore, incorporating essential teaching aids like illustrations and vocabulary cards can make lessons more dynamic and engaging Classrooms should be equipped with movable furniture arranged scientifically to foster a comfortable learning environment, facilitating better absorption of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills Limiting class sizes to a maximum of 15 students will encourage more effective interaction between teachers and students.
Create a dedicated self-study space for students to enhance their English skills, offering a comfortable environment for relaxation and communication practice This space should include activities such as reading, topic-based discussions, TOEIC level testing, movie watching, karaoke in English, vocabulary games, and thematic talks with experienced lecturers and proficient students Collaborate with English clubs, foreign volunteers, and other schools to foster a friendly exchange atmosphere that ignites enthusiasm for English among students Additionally, ensure the installation of free wireless fiber optic Internet to provide students with flexible study options.
To enhance student learning, the library must provide a diverse range of accessible English materials, including updated books in key fields such as business administration, accounting, and finance This will enable students from various majors to broaden their resources and support their English learning process Additionally, offering free access to educational websites and installing more high-speed internet-connected computers will facilitate document searches, video watching, and downloading of English listening lessons Furthermore, increasing the number of tables and chairs will create a conducive environment for individual reading, listening practice, and group discussions in English.
Group of solutions about the environment inside the classroom
Students generally rate the classroom environmental factors poorly, with many aspects receiving below-average scores In English lessons, Vietnamese remains the primary language of instruction, limiting the effectiveness of these classes Furthermore, students feel that the current curriculum fails to focus on enhancing their English learning skills, resulting in knowledge retention that remains superficial and not fully applicable To address these issues, several solutions have been proposed.
Teachers can effectively implement the compulsory practice method by consistently using English in the classroom, which encourages students to actively listen and interpret the language This approach necessitates patience and a coordinated effort among all educators, avoiding any discrepancies in language use based on students' course selections Transitioning to exclusive English instruction requires a gradual roadmap, as immediate implementation could lead to confusion and hinder students' comprehension of the material being taught.
The school should develop a strategic plan to transition from using Vietnamese to English in teaching, allowing students adequate time to adjust and fostering a positive mindset towards English classes Additionally, short training sessions for lecturers are essential to enhance their communication skills, enabling them to share and exchange teaching experiences with foreign educators effectively.
Students should recognize the significance of actively preparing for lessons before attending class Dedicating time to practice English at home fosters a positive mindset and boosts confidence, enabling them to engage more effectively in their studies This proactive approach helps avoid a passive learning experience and enhances overall academic performance.
Engaging in English lessons helps students enhance their Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills, facilitating effective communication and retention of vocabulary Regular interaction in English builds confidence in expressing opinions, while corrective feedback from teachers improves pronunciation Additionally, students learn to emphasize sounds in sentences and expand their vocabulary by mimicking their teacher's pronunciation and language use.
This effective solution enhances students' English vocabulary skills by encouraging thorough preparation before class and promoting focused engagement during lessons to fully understand the teacher's content.
Teachers should implement strategies to encourage student practice, such as creating mandatory score columns for group activities that involve English communication By assigning relevant topics for each lesson, educators can motivate students to engage actively in class discussions Incorporating real-life scenarios is essential for fostering an engaging learning environment, as it allows students to apply newly acquired knowledge immediately This approach not only enhances retention but also deepens their understanding of vocabulary, pronunciation, and contextual usage Additionally, the situations presented should enable students to review previous lessons, helping them to connect new concepts with prior knowledge and develop a more effective memorization and understanding system beyond textbook learning.
The English language program emphasizes practical application, catering to learners who often begin with specific goals in mind Most start with a general English curriculum, typically offered in high schools, to facilitate basic communication on everyday topics Since the 1960s, there has been a growing trend towards English teaching programs tailored to individual needs, leading to the development of English for Specific Purposes (ESP).
In today's global landscape, the demand for scientific, technical, and economic exchange has made English the primary language of communication This shift, coupled with advancements in industry, has propelled the field of Linguistics forward, particularly in the realm of English for Special Purposes (ESP) As a result, ESP has garnered significant interest from researchers and translators who are focused on developing effective teaching materials.
At the outset of the English program for Spoken English students, it is essential to emphasize general business communication to enhance English proficiency and familiarize students with economic and commercial terminology, as well as essential communication skills in a business context, in line with the school's output standards and TOEIC requirements Subsequently, to address students' needs for specialized reading materials, the program content should incorporate ESAP principles, focusing on the specific language structures, vocabulary, terminology, and skills necessary for their field of study, while emphasizing real-world professional scenarios that students will encounter.
The proposed curriculum solution consists of two parts: a general English section aimed at enhancing students' overall language and study skills, building on the higher level of the General Business English program, and a specialized section tailored to the student's major that emphasizes reading comprehension and specialized terminology This specialized section will involve team teaching, where groups of lecturers collaborate to design curriculum and teaching materials, analyze the language specific to the major, and work alongside specialized instructors to ensure relevant content delivery This approach not only clarifies the role of language teachers but also addresses the need for teaching specialized English effectively.
At the same time limit the study of knowledge that overlaps with what was learned in the general education program.
Incorporating a variety of images and video clips into lessons significantly enhances students' understanding of native speakers' communication styles, including gestures and context-specific language usage This multimedia approach goes beyond traditional lectures, fostering greater engagement and excitement in the classroom By integrating visual aids throughout the teaching process, educators can effectively illustrate new concepts, making learning more dynamic Teachers should invest time in curating relevant visuals or encourage students to seek out clips and images related to upcoming lessons Over time, this collaborative effort not only promotes student involvement in lesson preparation but also boosts their enthusiasm as they see the tangible results of their contributions, ultimately improving their listening and selection skills for appropriate content.
To enhance practical experience in the classroom, it is crucial to immediately apply newly acquired knowledge to real-life situations This approach allows for correction in pronunciation, intonation, and mannerisms, fostering creativity and encouraging active vocabulary selection Additionally, engaging with peers and teachers promotes deeper learning and retention of concepts.
Frequent and diverse grammar examples enhance retention and application in communication Educators should encourage students to practice grammar through speaking, writing, and analyzing texts rather than relying solely on multiple-choice formats This approach stimulates critical thinking and promotes better memory retention Collaborative learning among students also plays a vital role in making grammar practice regular, engaging, and effective.
The curriculum should be regularly updated to enhance students' English vocabulary skills, ensuring it aligns with their learning stages and promotes balanced practice across all four language skills, particularly communication Additionally, a proposed adjustment to the assessment ratio of the English learning process to 50/50 aims to align with curriculum objectives, encompassing both vocabulary acquisition and overall English proficiency for final exams This revised assessment approach is intended to alleviate pressure on students and program managers regarding classroom study demands and exam preparation, while also fostering fairness in English learning outcomes across various majors within the faculty.
Solution group on students' self-study ability
Self-study plays a crucial role in enhancing learning quality and achieving success It empowers students to stay updated with knowledge, particularly in English, and fosters adaptability to new information With a strong desire to learn anytime and anywhere, students can continuously improve their academic performance To excel in their studies and effectively communicate in English, students must cultivate self-study habits, engage in research, and explore new concepts for personal development.
Despite achieving only above-average assessment scores, students at the Faculty of English Language recognize the importance of setting goals to enhance their English communication skills They actively seek diverse learning resources but need further assistance in improving key factors related to their skills Additionally, their learning methods are often limited and ineffective, with insufficient time allocated to self-study outside of English modules To address these challenges and build on their strengths, students should consider implementing targeted solutions to enhance their learning experience.
To succeed in self-studying English, it's essential to believe in your abilities and leverage both internal resources and external guidance from lecturers Establishing a clear purpose and motivation is crucial, along with setting achievable goals using the SMART criteria—specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound For instance, if aiming for a TOEIC score of 450 within six months, commit to learning at least 10 new vocabulary words daily, practice listening skills through English dialogues on platforms like YouTube, and consistently review grammar Regularly testing your knowledge through online resources will further enhance your learning experience.
Students must take their English vocabulary goals seriously and actively work to enhance their learning abilities To stay motivated, they can engage in enjoyable activities, such as organizing games that promote English communication, like listening to character guessing clips or compiling vocabulary lists on specific topics Additionally, changing study environments—such as studying in a park or at a friend's house—can boost enthusiasm and create a positive mindset Recognizing the importance of motivation in learning English is crucial, as it significantly influences their ability to adhere to their self-study plans.
Third, in order to have a method of training to improve the ability to learn
To effectively enhance their English vocabulary, students should create and manage a well-structured study plan that defines their learning process This plan should incorporate various learning methods, such as focusing on specific majors or topics of personal interest Students are encouraged to actively engage during lectures and utilize resources like reference books, applying the SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) to summarize and retain key information It's crucial not to overlook class time, as it provides essential foundational knowledge that supports independent study and collaborative learning with peers.
Engage in discussions with knowledgeable individuals, such as friends and teachers, to address your English language challenges and take notes to minimize errors in grammar and pronunciation Actively implement your learning by practicing English communication within study groups or with peers Forming a self-study group with friends provides a supportive environment for members to share their difficulties in listening and speaking, as well as exchange experiences and lessons to enhance their English communication skills This collaborative approach offers the advantage of having an audience for practice, making the learning process more effective than solitary study.
To effectively improve English vocabulary, students should organize their time wisely by always carrying a notebook and dictionary to capture new words during daily activities Utilizing "dead" time, such as while commuting, allows them to jot down unfamiliar vocabulary encountered on billboards or in conversations with native speakers Establishing a habit of practicing English daily is crucial, as is dedicating specific time for English learning amidst other tasks By prioritizing study over leisure, students can enhance their language skills and make the most of their English classes for better learning outcomes.
Students should actively gather and update a diverse range of reference materials, including books, newspapers, and multimedia resources, to enhance their learning experience By collaborating with peers and teachers and utilizing modern technology, they can build a wealth of knowledge and avoid complacency with initial successes.
To enhance self-study and English communication skills, students must focus on overcoming distractions from social media and gaming Although many students recognize the importance of self-study, they often struggle to resist temptations that divert their attention To address this issue, it's essential for students to create a balanced timetable that accommodates both study and leisure activities By tailoring their schedules to fit individual needs, students can effectively manage their time and improve their academic performance.

Students should create a balanced daily timetable that accommodates their modules, allowing for flexible self-study while maintaining the determination to adhere to their schedule For effective communicative English practice, it's recommended to break self-study into sessions of 30-45 minutes, conducted 2-3 times a day, incorporating varied formats, content, and interaction with different communication partners to enhance engagement and interest.
To successfully learn English, it's essential to change your daily habits and dedicate time each day to practice, just as you would with any other hobby Incorporate English into your routine by watching movies, browsing the internet, or reading an English book for at least 30 minutes daily Although it may be challenging to make lasting changes, consistent daily practice is more effective than cramming all at once Engaging with the language through listening and communicating with friends will help reinforce these habits and integrate English into your lifestyle By viewing English as a vital part of your life, you will enhance your chances of success.
To effectively evaluate our self-study abilities in English, it is essential to engage with friends, teachers, and English communication clubs to assess our proficiency levels This feedback can lead to the development of more effective learning strategies Additionally, recognizing improvements in our English skills can serve as a powerful motivator Conversely, if we fail to meet our goals, implementing self-imposed consequences can help us acknowledge our mistakes and encourage corrective actions to avoid repetition.
CONCLUSION
English is a West Germanic language that belongs to the Indo-European language family, originating from early medieval England Its name derives from the Angles, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Great Britain Linguistically, English shares close ties with Frisian and Lower Saxon, but its vocabulary has been significantly shaped by influences from French and Latin, each contributing approximately 29%, along with Old Norse impacts on its core grammar and vocabulary.
Old English, derived from North Sea Germanic dialects, emerged with the Anglo-Saxon migration to Great Britain in the 5th century, evolving through contact with Old Norse due to Viking influence The Middle English period began in the late 11th century following the Norman invasion, marked by the incorporation of Old French and Latin vocabulary By the late 15th century, English transitioned into the modern period, characterized by significant vowel shifts and the adoption of Greco-Roman words during the Renaissance This era also saw a flourishing of English literature, highlighted by the King James Bible translation and the works of William Shakespeare.
Modern English grammar has evolved from the Indo-European system's dependent-marking structure, characterized by rich morphological variation and flexible word order, to a more analytic form with reduced morphological diversity and a stricter word order This contemporary structure relies significantly on auxiliary verbs and specific word arrangements to convey complex tenses, moods, aspects, and to form passive, interrogative, and negative constructions.
Since the 17th century, Modern English has spread globally due to the British Empire and the United States, becoming a dominant lingua franca in various fields such as science, navigation, and law It is the most widely spoken language worldwide, with the third largest number of native speakers, following Standard Chinese and Spanish Additionally, English is the most commonly learned foreign language and serves as the official or co-official language in 59 countries Notably, the number of non-native English speakers now exceeds that of native speakers.
As of 2005, the estimated number of English speakers worldwide reached 2 billion, making it the predominant language in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland Additionally, English is widely spoken in various regions, including parts of the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania It serves as a co-official language for international bodies like the United Nations and the European Union, and it stands as the most widely spoken Germanic language, comprising at least 70% of all speakers of Indo-European languages.
Vocabulary knowledge is a crucial tool for second language learners, as limited vocabulary can impede successful language acquisition Schmitt (2000) highlights that lexical knowledge is essential for mastering a second language, while Nation (2001) elaborates on the interplay between vocabulary knowledge and language use The significance of vocabulary is evident both in and out of the classroom, where students often achieve a comprehensive understanding of vocabulary Researchers such as Laufer and Nation (1999), Maximo (2000), Read (2000), Gu (2003), Marion (2008), and Nation (2011) have contributed to this understanding, reinforcing the importance of vocabulary in language learning.
Acquiring vocabulary is crucial for effective communication in a second language, significantly impacting the development of both spoken and written texts In the context of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), vocabulary is vital across all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Nation, 2011) Rivers and Nunan (1991) emphasize that a robust vocabulary is essential for successful language use, as a lack of vocabulary can hinder communication Proficiency in a second language largely depends on lexical knowledge, which is often the primary challenge that learners face in achieving fluency in English (Huckin, 1995).
