and Affiliated Eligibility Decisions on Awards Contacting the Trusts ABOUT THE TRUSTS The Cambridge Trusts (comprising the Gates Cambridge Trust, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, the Cambridge Overseas Trust and the Cambridge European Trust) offer scholarships and part-cost bursaries to students from Overseas and the European Union (excluding the United Kingdom) who have been accepted for admission at the University of Cambridge to pursue a full time course of study or research The Cambridge Trusts currently support over 2,000 students in residence at Cambridge and gratefully Vergottis • Mr Chris Von Christierson • Mr Wing Yip • World Bank Gates Cambridge Trust With a munificent benefaction from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates Cambridge Trust has established, with effect from October 2001, a scheme of Gates Cambridge Scholarships for scholars of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential from every country of the world (excluding the United Kingdom), who are committed to serving their communities, and who gain admission to the University of Cambridge Since 2001, the Gates Cambridge Trust has supported 428 Scholars from 67 countries The Gates Cambridge Trust offers a substantial number of awards annually, which will cover the costs of studying at Cambridge for the following full-time courses of study: Research leading to the degree of PhD One-year postgraduate courses of study Second bachelor degree as an affiliated student (see the Undergraduate Prospectus) MBBChir in Clinical Studies Some of these awards will be for students from the United States of America; but students from all countries, including countries of the European Union (but excluding the United Kingdom), will be eligible to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship As well as being of outstanding academic merit, candidates for these awards must show evidence of leadership potential and a commitment to serving their communities The Gates Cambridge Scholarships will cover: • • • • University Composition Fee and College fees at the appropriate1 rate A maintenance allowance for a single student A further discretionary allowance One return economy airfare Where an applicant from overseas has been successfully nominated for an ORS award, the University Composition Fee will be paid at the home rate Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities, the Trust will not pay these fees In selecting Gates Cambridge Scholars, the Trust looks for students of exceptional academic achievement and scholarly promise for whom advanced study at Cambridge would be particularly appropriate The Trust expects a good match to be made between the applicant's qualifications and aspirations and what Cambridge has to offer Successful applicants will have the ability to make a significant contribution to their discipline while in Cambridge, with a strong aptitude for research, analysis and a creative approach to defining and solving problems Over time, Gates Cambridge Scholars will form an integral and dynamic part of the University's influential international alumni network, bringing vision and new ideas to improving the lives of citizens throughout the world Cambridge alumni take the lead in applying knowledge and skill to major problems in every walk of life: Gates Cambridge Scholars are thus expected to use their education for the benefit of others and to improve the common weal Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded only to students who gain admission to the University through the University's regular procedures They cover the full cost of study at Cambridge for a single person - namely, all approved University and College tuition fees, a maintenance allowance (which for 2005-06 will be £8,400 for 12 months), a further discretionary allowance for study-related activities (which for 2005-06 will be £2,000), and one return economy and Cambridge Overseas Trust The Cambridge Commonwealth Trust (for Commonwealth countries, excluding the United Kingdom) and the Cambridge Overseas Trust (formerly the Chancellor's Fund, for countries outside the Commonwealth) were established in 1982 by the University of Cambridge under the Chairmanship of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to provide financial assistance for outstanding students from overseas who, without help, would be unable to take up their places at Cambridge Since 1982, the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust has brought 6,600 students from 51 countries to Cambridge, the Cambridge Overseas Trust 4,252 students from 76 countries Cambridge European Trust The Cambridge European Trust was established in 1995 under the Chairmanship of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to provide part-cost financial assistance to help outstanding students from countries of the European Union (excluding the United Kingdom) to take up their places at Cambridge Since 1995 the Cambridge European Trust has brought 2,282 students from 22 countries of the European Union (excluding the United Kingdom) to Cambridge Awards offered by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, Cambridge Overseas Trust and Cambridge European Trust The Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, the Cambridge Overseas Trust and the Cambridge European Trust offer a number of scholarships and bursaries, under a multiplicity of schemes, to enable candidates of outstanding academic merit from around the world (excluding the United Kingdom) to pursue courses of study at the University of Cambridge These awards are for all levels of graduate and undergraduate study Scholarships Scholarships are normally attached to particular countries, levels of study and, in some cases, to specific areas of study Details of scholarships for different countries, variations in application procedures and values of particular scholarships can be found in the on-line version of the Graduate Studies Prospectus • www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/funding/overseas/country.html NOTE: the Trusts not provide maintenance allowances for dependants and not offer awards for part-time study Bursaries Bursaries are available to students irrespective of their nationality Accordingly, applicants from countries where the Trusts not offer full-cost awards will normally be eligible to be considered for a part-cost bursary The value of a bursary, which is normally held in conjunction with awards from sources other than the Trusts, will be a partial contribution only towards the costs of study at Cambridge and is Trust see: • www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/funding/overseas HOW TO APPLY Graduate Study Please note that the Trusts cannot admit students to the University or to any of its Colleges Applicants for awards from the Trusts must therefore also apply to the University of Cambridge and be offered a place at Cambridge in the normal way The table overleaf summarises the application forms that applicants must submit to be eligible for awards from the Trusts, together with the deadlines by which these forms must be returned Applicants should complete and return these forms to the Board of Graduate Studies by the deadlines set out on the table overleaf All applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for awards offered by bodies other than the Trusts, whether from sources in Cambridge or from sources in their home country In particular, overseas research candidates are reminded that they must, where eligible, apply to the Board of Graduate Studies for an Overseas Research Studentship (ORS) award by 19 January 2006 (see Graduate Studies Prospectus for further details) All candidates from countries of the European Union are reminded to apply, where eligible, for public fees awards offered by the Research Councils (see Graduate Studies Prospectus for further details) How to apply for admission Applicants for admission to the University must complete and return a Graduate Application Form to the Board of Graduate Studies as soon as possible and no later than the deadline set out on the table overleaf Candidates may obtain a Graduate Application Form in the following for funding from the Trusts must also complete the relevant* Scholarship Application Form and return it to the Board of Graduate Studies as soon as possible and no later than the deadline set out on www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/admissions/forms * NOTE: there are special instructions, deadlines and application forms for: • • • Candidates from the USA who have not previously studied at Cambridge Candidates intending to apply for an MBA in Management Studies Candidates intending to apply for the MBBChir Clinical Studies degree Candidates in the categories above must download the relevant special Scholarship Application Form via the website:www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/funding/overseas/applying ELIGIBILITY GRADUATE STUDY All applicants: • must have a first class or high second class honours degree, or its equivalent, from a recognised university (and for research leading to the degree of PhD will usually need to hold a Masters degree) • should normally be under the age of 30 • from overseas (except those from countries of the European Union) intending to pursue a course of research leading to the degree of PhD must apply for an ORS award which pays the difference between the home and overseas rate of the University Composition Fee (see the Graduate Studies Prospectus for further information) • from countries of the European Union may be eligible for fees awards from public authorities, and must apply for these where appropriate (see the Graduate Studies Prospectus for further information) • must, in due course, be offered admission by the University in the normal way to pursue a fulltime course of study or research • who are not native speakers of English are required by the Board of Graduate Studies to provide the results of an English language test and to meet the minimum standard of proficiency required for admission to Cambridge (see the Graduate Studies Prospectus) as follows: IELTS test: minimum score Band 7.0, with no individual element of the test below Band 6.0, or TOEFL test (paper-based): minimum score 600, with a minimum score of 5.0 in the TOEFL Test of Written English (TWE), or TOEFL test (computer-based): minimum score 250 overall, with a minimum score of 5.0 in the essay writing section of the test ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTS: although the Board of Graduate Studies does not set a deadline for the receipt of the results of English language tests, in order to be considered for an award from the Trusts, candidates must take steps to ensure they achieve the minimum standard by arranging and taking an English language test and returning the results of that test to the Board of Graduate Studies AS SOON AS POSSIBLE INELIGIBLE APPLICANTS • Students who are classed as ‘Home’ students for fees purposes (e.g UK nationals) • Applicants who are already in-residence at Cambridge and who are not changing their course of study will not normally be eligible for a grant from the Trusts If such candidates encounter financial difficulties, their first port of call must be the Board of Graduate Studies, their Department and their College for financial help • Students who are currently registered as 'MPhil in the first instance' at Cambridge and wish to continue on to the PhD element of their course will not be eligible to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship Such students may be eligible for modest awards from the other Cambridge Trusts • Applicants intending to pursue a part-time course of study HOW TO APPLY Undergraduate & Affiliated Study All applicants who intend to study as an undergraduate or affiliated (i.e second undergraduate degree) student must apply directly to a Cambridge College of their choice and submit completed application forms for admission to the College BY 15 OCTOBER 2005, a full calendar year in advance of the proposed date of entry Candidates offered admission by a College to pursue undergraduate or affiliated studies will be sent the Cambridge Trusts’ Scholarship Application Form (UGSAF) by the College The form must be completed by the candidate and by an academic referee and returned to the College NO LATER THAN 28 FEBRUARY 2006 Candidates offered admission by a College to pursue a first undergraduate degree will be considered for awards offered by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust (for citizens of Commonwealth Countries), the Cambridge Overseas Trust (for citizens from non-Commonwealth countries) or the Cambridge European Trust (for candidates who are citizens of countries of the European Union) Candidates from any country of the World (except the UK) who are offered admission by a College to pursue a second undergraduate (affiliated) degree will also be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship Candidates who gain admission as either an undergraduate or as an affiliated student will need only to complete the one Cambridge Trusts’ Undergraduate Scholarships Application Form (UGSAF) For further information about Ineligible applicants • Students who are classed as ‘Home’ students for fees purposes (e.g UK nationals) DECISIONS ON AWARDS The Cambridge Trusts consider applications for funding on timetables which vary from scheme to scheme, and depend on many factors, including decisions from the Board of Graduate Studies, the Colleges, interviews and timetables of collaborators The Cambridge Trusts consider well over 3,000 applications each year, so candidates may not hear from the Trusts until quite late in the day The Trusts will make every effort to keep candidates informed, but seek the indulgence of applicants in being patient in waiting for a reply It would be a kindness if applicants only contact the Trusts if absolutely necessary and, in the first instance, by e-mail
