Students and Parents/Guardians, Welcome to 10th grade! I hope you are as excited about this school year as I am! I want to take a moment for you get to know me, and make sure you check the back for class policies/procedures. My name is Mrs Sabrina Weber, and I teach 10th grade English Language Arts (it’s much more fun than just the language we speak!) This is my 5th year teaching, but my first year here at United! I am honored to join a school that has such a rich history and tradition of excellence. I graduated high school from Columbiana I then attended The University of Akron, and I graduated from Youngstown State University in December 2013 Because I graduated in the middle of a school year, I substitute taught at East Palestine and Girard until I was hired to teach Junior English and Journalism at Choffin Career and Technical Center in 2014 For the past three years, I have been teaching an accelerated curriculum at Rayen Early College. A lot of people don’t like English, and I can understand their reasons why, but I truly love it I love to be able to share our experiences through writing and reading We can read something hundreds even thousands of years old, and we can still relate to what generations before us felt, thought, and did because our existence and experiences unite us We all feel, we all love, we all have families, and we all have hardships to overcome It is wonderful to teach a subject that I get to learn so much about who my students are We will truly become like a family by the end of the year! As a 10th grader, you will have an opportunity to participate in the YSU English Festival This is a wonderful event where we get to travel to YSU to hear famous authors talk about their books, their motivations, and we get to play games all related to books we read throughout the year There are typically books, which students will have to prove they read to participate Only the top 30 students will be able to attend and that’s out of grade levels (7-12) The more books you read, the better chance you will have to go. Some fun facts about who I am: ★ I am the youngest of 5, and I’m the only girl ★ My pride and joy is my son, (Carson) and my puppy, (Sadie) ★ I love any and all outdoor activities, and fall is my absolute favorite season ★ I hope to become an author one day and a professor There’s so much we will learn about each other, and I truly look forward to getting to know each of every one of you! Sincerely, Mrs Sabrina Weber What will we learn? The state of Ohio dictates which standards are taught in 10th grade Those standards include five key topics with reading (fiction and nonfiction), writing, vocabulary/language, and speaking and listening. Do you give homework? YES! I understand we all have commitments outside of school, but occasionally you will be assigned homework that will be graded for completeness AND accuracy. Will we work in groups? Occasionally in class, but I will not have group projects that must be completed outside of school UNLESS you waste the class time I provide to get the project done. What if I am absent? Check my website! I also have a calendar near my door of what you missed that day, and I will keep the printouts in my absent folders or you can check on Google Classroom It is YOUR responsibility to get your missed work and turn it in on time You will have to your absent work at home or during any free time you might possibly have During my class we will have new material to cover the day you come back REMEMBER, you only have the amount of days absent to bring back the work For example, if you missed one day then you only have one day to make it up. What if I just don’t get it? Talk to me We will arrange a time that works for both of us to get you the help that you need! I am willing to work through lunch or stay before or after school Please allow me at least one day notice, so I can make proper arrangements. What are your classroom policies? Everything comes down to RESPECT While you are in my classroom, I ask that you be respectful – of yourself, of me, of your peers, of school property, etc Disrespectful behavior of any sort will be handled following school procedures EXAMPLE: If you are talking or being disruptive, you are disrespecting yourself, your peers, and myself. 1st time- warning/call home/lunch detention (based on severity) 2nd time-call home/lunch detention/referral (based on severity) 3rd time- referral and possibly immediate removal from class (ADC) with no chance to make up the work missed (based on severity) How will I be graded? We will have tests and quizzes, but the bulk of your grades will be in-class work, homework, and in-class projects Participation in class discussions and demonstrations is absolutely REQUIRED and NECESSARY according my Ohio Standards! Please realize that you will HAVE to discuss and speak up at various points almost DAILY. What supplies will I need?
