1 Life Sciences South Florida STEM Undergraduate Research Symposium Presentation Submission Guidelines The annual Life Sciences South Florida STEM Undergraduate Research Symposium will showcase the scientific work of South Florida’s undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), students through student poster and oral presentations All participants in the symposium gain valuable experience, presentation skills, and recognition by their peers, local colleges and universities, as well as life science industries Judging will take place during each presentation, and prizes will be awarded at the end of the day for outstanding projects nd Abstracts for presentation submissions will be evaluated at each institution The institutions will select up to 10 qualifying participants per institution for the symposium Each institution will nominate up to poster presentations and up to oral presentations  Poster boards will be limited to four feet (1.22 m) wide and three feet (0.91 m) high with information organized in columns.*  Oral presentation will be limited to an eight minute presentation with an additional minutes for questions Abstracts will be judged at the institutional level according to the following criteria:  Significance and importance of the topic  Appropriateness of the research question  Choice of research methods and procedures  Interpretation of results  Clarity of the abstract IMPORTANT DATES:  Submission Deadline: Friday, February 28, 2014 at 5:00 p.m (see contacts below)  Symposium Date: Saturday, April 12, 2014, FIU Modesto Maidique Campus from 8:30 a.m – 2:00 p.m The Presentation Submission Application and Abstract should be submitted to the following individuals at each institution:        Florida Atlantic University: Donna Chamely-Wiik, ouri@fau.edu Florida Gulf Coast University: Shawn Kelly, skelly@fgcu.edu Florida International University: Courtney Aiken, courtney.aiken@fiu.edu Indian River State College: Anthony Iacono, aiacono@irsc.edu Miami Dade College: Heather Belmont, hbelmont@mdc.edu Nova Southeastern University: Jaime Tartar, tartar@nova.edu Palm Beach State College: Alexandra Gorgevska, gorgevsa@palmbeachstate.edu *All posters must be approved by the faculty research advisor prior to printing Selected students are encouraged to bring copies of their resumes and be prepared to interact with industry and university partners Presentation Submission Guidelines (December 2013) Life Sciences South Florida STEM Undergraduate Research Symposium Presentation Submission Application Student(s) Name(s) Student(s) email Address(es) Contact Phone Number Department/Program Faculty Advisor’s Name Faculty Advisor’s email address Presentation Format: Please select either Oral or Poster Oral Presentation (PowerPoint) Poster Presentation Presentation Submission Guidelines (December 2013) Life Sciences South Florida STEM Undergraduate Research Symposium Abstract Guidelines       An abstract is a summary of the essentials of the research project which includes the following: o A clearly defined research question and the purpose of the study o A concise discussion of the research methodology, o The project findings (final or in process) The title of the abstract should be as concise as possible and should appear in bold, lowercase and centered Co-authors and affiliations appear below the title in italics (the name of the presenting author should appear first) The word “Abstract” should appear below the affiliation and should be emboldened, centered, and underlined The body of the abstract follows after a spacing line The body of the abstract is to be no longer than 250 words in portrait layout, single-spaced, and full justified Sample Abstract: The Title is to be Centered on the Page John Smith, Sally Jones, and Jim Advisor, Ph.D Florida International University, Miami, Fl Abstract The body of this abstract sample template contains important instructions that MUST be followed Note the formatting above, including bold, spacing, and underlining Your abstract (which is a summary of your project) goes here and should be no longer than 250 words This document is single spaced and formatted in 12-point Times New Roman font Your faculty advisor must review and approve this abstract prior to submission The presentation submission application and the abstract should be submitted as one document This document is to be sent as an email attachment, created in MS Word and saved as the first author’s last name then a period, followed by the institution then a period, followed by the first three words of the title (Lastname.institute.3wordsoftitle.doc) e.g.: (Jones.FAU.NeuralStemCells.doc) The document should then be emailed to the appropriate person at each institution as specified on page one of these submission guidelines Presentation Submission Guidelines (December 2013) ...
