POSITION PROSPECTUS Neptune, New Jersey MANAGER, PLANT OPERATIONS Company Background Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) is a not-for-profit 502-bed, acute care hospital located in an attractive coastal resort area It is one of six hospitals that comprise the Meridian Health family: Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Ocean Medical Center, Riverview Medical Center, K Hovnanian Children's Hospital, Southern Ocean Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital JSUMC is a major teaching hospital and tertiary care center and supports a Level II Regional Trauma Center, a Level III Regional Perinatal Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the only open heart surgery program in the system’s two-county market, and the K Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, the region’s first and largest state-designated children’s hospital This is an exciting time for Jersey Shore University Medical Center In 2009 the medical center completed the Transforming Care project, a $300 million expansion and renovation project that added 136 new inpatient beds, the 4-story, 213,000 sf Northwest Pavilion, the 3-story, 109,000 sf Mildred Rosa Diagnostic and Treatment Pavilion, a state-of-the-art emergency and trauma department center, new surgical suites, a 975 space parking garage, and a new state-of-the-art central utility plant The medical center is also aggressively expanding its academic programs and is an affiliate of the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School The hospital sustains accredited independent residency programs in internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, and general dentistry; integrated residencies and fellowships in general surgery, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, infectious diseases, neonatology, perinatology, child and adolescent psychiatry, and endocrinology; and independent fellowships in geriatrics (medicine) and sports medicine (pediatrics) Jersey Shore University Medical Center was designated by J.D Power and Associates as a Distinguished Hospital for Inpatient Services in 2006 and received the New Jersey Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence in 2005 In 2010, it was voted “the best” hospital in Monmouth County by the Asbury Park Press Reader’s Choice Awards With its Meridian Partner Hospitals, JSUMC was awarded FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” in 2010 The system has also been named one of Hospitals and Health Network’s “100 Most Wired” health care organizations for 10 consecutive years The New Jersey Business and Industry Association’s NJ Biz magazine has recognized Meridian as one of the top ten employers in New Jersey for five consecutive years In addition, Meridian Health has been honored with the prestigious John M Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality, only the third health care organization in the country to receive the award In 1998, Meridian became the first health system in the country in which all system-owned hospitals achieved Magnet status for nursing excellence Magnet status, recognition of outstanding nursing care, is bestowed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the accrediting body of the American Nurses Association For more information on Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Meridian Health, please visit their Web site at www.jerseyshoreuniversitymedicalcenter.com and www.meridianhealth.com respectively Position Mission The Manager, Plant Operations oversees all systems and facilities management of Jersey Shore University Medical Center, including day-to-day facility operations, emergency facility management, coordination of building projects, and facilities upgrades He or she acts as a liaison with vendors, architects, and construction companies for all campus building and expansion projects Budget oversight for the position includes $2.3M in salaries, $750k in supplies, $3M in contracted services, electric utility of $2M, and gas utility of $3.8M This position also oversees the million sf campus’ two cogenerators that manage energy costs for the facility The Manager, Plant Operations reports to the Vice President of Operations with a dotted line relationship to Meridian’s Corporate Vice President of Facilities and Planning Four staff members report directly to the position: Work Control; Assistant Project Manager; Utilities Supervisor; and Maintenance Supervisor A total staff of 34 reports to the position Candidate Qualifications The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications and experience: Education & Experience  A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required A Master’s degree in Engineering or business is preferred  8-10 years of demonstrated successful management experience in an environment of similar size and complexity, preferably in a healthcare setting  Demonstrated business operations and project management experience  Experience in a facility with cogenerators a plus Capabilities  Ability to quickly establish rapport and credibility with JSUMC’s President, Vice President of Operations, Meridian’s Vice President of Facilities and Planning, JSUMC’s Plant Operations staff and staff across the organization  Strong project management skills to work effectively on behalf of JSUMC with contractors in coordinating building and renovation projects  Ability to ensure that JSUMC is in compliance with all local, state and federal regulatory requirements, including life and fire safety requirements  Ability to accurately complete a statement of condition for Joint Commission surveys, meeting all requirements to ensure JSUMC continues to receive high marks on the survey  Strong business acumen and analytical skills to effectively manage the department’s operations and budgets, including utilities and contract services  An enthusiastic coach and leader with demonstrated ability to recruit, mentor, train and develop staff and monitor performance, holding staff accountable for providing superior service  A strong, uncompromising service orientation The ability to communicate passion about JSUMC’s mission while leading and inspiring staff to the same The innate ability to lead by example  Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build successful relationships with staff across the organization while maintaining the ability to be decisive and forthright in a consensus- and metrics-driven environment  Exceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills Ability to clearly articulate goals and expectations across the organization  Ability to treat both internal and external constituents as clients and customers, maintaining a flexible customer service approach and orientation that emphasizes excellence and quality  Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a hands-on manner, adjusting to issues as needed in a dynamic work environment The ability to prioritize and effectively anticipate and respond to issues as they arise Personal Characteristics  Strong team player  Integrity  Accountability  Results-oriented  Enthusiastic  Strategic thinker  Flexible  Confident  Strong work ethic and high energy  A sense of humor First-Year Aspirations The new Manager, Plant Operations will focus on the following objectives during his or her first year:  Establishing personal and professional credibility with JSUMC’s President, Vice President of Operations, Meridian’s Vice President of Facilities and Planning, JSUMC’s Plant Operations staff and staff across the organization  Continuing the corrective plan for the one cogenerator that is currently offline due to a failed emissions test to bring it into compliance; moving forward, conducting regular testing and maintenance of both cogenerators to ensure they are running efficiently  Playing a role in the east campus expansion of the academic and outpatient buildings  Acting as a liaison and campus expert with vendors, architects, and construction companies to provide a cohesive and thorough understanding of facilities needs throughout the organization  Working closely with the state Department of Transportation in the Route 33 expansion that will happen in conjunction with the east campus expansion  Coordinating facilities operations needs for buildout and renovation projects ranging from $1-12M to ensure that the campus is operating as efficiently and safely as possible  Playing a role in advising executive leadership on the most up-to-date industry trends to ensure that JSUMC remains a leader in the field  Maintaining knowledge of the most current regulatory compliance standards and regulations, including life and fire safety regulations, to ensure that JSUMC’s facilities are fully compliant and offer the highest standards of care  Monitoring energy consumption to measure how efficiently the facility is operating, making adjustments as necessary to promote a highly efficient operation  Maintaining a dashboard to measure and monitor staff productivity;
