North Carolina A&T State University “What Would You Be Willing To Sit-in For Today?" 60th Sit-In Celebration Anniversary High School Essay Contest ELIGIBILITY: Open to Guilford County School High School students (grades 9th through 12th) No more than 10 (ten) submissions will be accepted from any single school REQUIREMENTS: Typed, Times New Roman, 12 font, double-spaced, one-inch margins No less than 700 words; no more than 1,000 words (Citations and bibliography are not included in the word count.) Submissions will be accepted starting Friday, November 1, 2019, until Friday, January 10, 2020 (midnight) Essays must be the original work of the student and may address an issue at the local, state, or national level Students must describe a cause worthy of civil disobedience requiring personal, social and political courage and explain what they would to bring about a new reality SOURCE MATERIAL: MLA or APA style Please use parenthetical citations within the text Must use a minimum of three selected sources; essays with fewer than three sources may be disqualified Essays must include a bibliography; essays that rely solely on Internet sources may be disqualified ESSAY SUBMISSION: Essays must be postmarked or emailed by Friday, January 10, 2020 Mail entry to Gerald Spates, Multicultural Student Center, NC A&T State University, Student Center, Suite 367, 1403 John W Mitchell Dr., Greensboro, NC 27411, (336) 334-7800 or submit online to msc@ncat.edu The registration form must be submitted with the essay Note that this form requires a school official nomination/signature (electronic signatures will be verified) NOMINATING SCHOOL OFFICIAL: All students must list the name of the nominating school official (teacher, counselor or administrator) on the registration form The role of the nominating official is to provide advice, editorial assistance, and coaching as well as to review the submission A nominating official must be a currently employed member at the same high school as the essay participant AWARDS: The 1st Place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship award and certificate of appreciation The 2nd Place winner receives a $500 scholarship award and certificate of appreciation Eligibility to receive scholarships requires that winners must enroll full-time at N.C A&T following high school graduation Winners will be acknowledged during the February Sit-In Anniversary Panel Discussion at 10:30 a.m in Harrison Auditorium Also, all students who submit an essay for the competition will receive a certificate of participation to be delivered on a different date following the annual February One Celebration Note, the annual breakfast will take place early morning on Friday, January 31, 2020, at a.m in the Alumni Foundation Event Center; followed by the 10 a.m Laying of the Memorial Wreath, and the 10:30 a.m Panel Discussion in Harrison Auditorium All events are free and open to the public JUDGING: Judges are appointed by the SIT-IN COMMITTEE Criteria for judging: Content (60%): Identified an issue; well researched; explained why laws or regulations pertaining to the issue must be changed and why breaking the law is justified, and what changes or desired outcomes civil disobedience would bring about; offered critical analysis; demonstrated an understanding of the changes brought about by the sit-in movement of the 1960s Presentation and style (40%): Communicated ideas clearly; well organized; correct syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; written compellingly and originally CONTEST POLICIES: All entries must be postmarked by midnight January 10, 2020 N.C A&T is not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, damaged, illegible, or incomplete submissions REGISTRATION FORM Essay Contest: What Would You Be Willing To Sit-in For Today?
