Welcome back to school from the fifth grade team! July 17, 2014 Thank you for coming to “Meet the Teacher!” We are looking forward to a positive and productive year of learning There is a TON of information to share about the upcoming year, much of which you will bring home to review (and sign as needed) this evening Please read through the paperwork and let us know if you have any questions This year, we will be “departmentalizing,” meaning students will be rotating to different teachers for mathematics, language arts, and science/social studies instruction Read more about the teachers on the fifth grade team on the back of this page There are many advantages to the approach of rotating classes One benefit of switching classes is that the students have the opportunity to experience different teachers, teaching styles and groups of students Additionally, teachers can focus more time on becoming “experts” in their content area, spend more time planning instruction and more easily differentiate instruction according to specific needs of the students Finally, it allows students a taste of what they will experience after fifth grade… changing classes according to subject is going to be a reality for the rest of their school careers The Fifth Grade Team SONIA BALLESTEROS: Welcome to 5th grade! My name is Sonia Ballesteros I am a graduate of the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Elementary Education and also a graduate of the University of Phoenix with Master’s Degree with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction I have been teaching th grade for fourteen years This will be my 10 th year here at Navarrete I am excited to start this new journey with your child and will provide a positive leaning environment throughout the school year CHRIS CAVANAUGH: This year will be my twelfth year of teaching 5th grade and my thirteenth year of teaching elementary school I enjoy teaching mathematics and in preparation for the new Arizona College and Career Readiness standards I have taken a multitude of training hours focused on math enrichment I’m thoroughly excited to mix it up a little this year and I think the students will enjoy the variation of instructors and instruction styles MICHELE COAKLEY: My name is Michele Coakley and I would like to welcome you and your family to th grade I have been part of the Navarrete Team since 2006 and have taught music, first grade, and now fifth grade I attended California State University at Fullerton and earned a bachelor's degree in Communication In 2006 I earned my master's degree in Elementary Education at the University of Phoenix I am part of the DIBELS team for reading screening and intervention I believe that language and the ability to express one’s self is important I am looking forward to helping your child grow in their abilities BIANCA DOLLER: My name is Bianca Doller and I am excited to be one of the th grade teachers! This is my second year teaching here at Navarrete I have fallen in love with the school, along with its staff and students I really enjoy teaching math and I hope I can share a lot of my cool math tricks with you I am a native of Arizona, born and raised in Tempe I attended Arizona State University and played for the Women’s Soccer team GO SUN DEVILS! In my free time, I love to travel the world and spend time with my family I hope to make our classroom community a supportive and fun environment! GO NIGHTHAWKS! EMMA KING: I love teaching, especially 5th grade!
