Conclusion 10 lOMoARcPSD|12114775 1.1: The concept of translation _ The term “translation” itself has several meanings: It can refer to general subject field, the product (the text that has been translated) or the process (the act of producing the translation, known as translating) _ The process of translation between two different writtern languages involves the translator changing an original written text (the source text or ST) in the original verbal language (the source language or SL) into a written text (the target text or TT) in a different verbal (the target language or TL) This type corresponds to “interlingual translation” and is one of the three categories of translation described by Roman Jakobson intralingual translation, or “rewording”: “an interpretation of verbal signs by means of verbal signs of the same language” interlingual translation, or “translation proper”: “an interpretation of verbal signs by means of verbal signs of some other language” intersemiotic translation, or “transmutation”: “ an interpretation of verbal signs by means of signs of non-verbal sign systems” §§§ In conclusion, Source Language: The language being translated from Target Language: The language being translated to Example: Turkish English Holmes’s paper refers to many key aspects of translation It talks of translation as: a process – what happens in the act of translating the ST a product – analysis of the TT a function – how the TT operates in a particular context lOMoARcPSD|12114775 1.2: What is translation studies? _ By 2015, the global market was estimated to exceed US$38 billion the European Union translate spend €456 million per year There are have visible ways : _ A vast expansion in specialized translating and interpreting programmmes _ A proliferation of conferences, books and journals on translation in many languages _ The demand for general and analytical instruments is ever-growing _ The international orgranizations have also prospered 1.3: An early brief history of the discipline - Documents of translation had appeared since a very long time ago - The translation studies was mentioned with the works of Cicero, Horace and St Jerome from more than a thousand years ago - Translation studies became the research subject in the late 20th century - In fact, from the late 18th century to 1960s, the studies of translation mainly focused on grammar and translating practice - According to the documents, the translation of very strange context-free sentences in the Advanced Spanish Course just for practicing the use of verbs - From 1960, the method of learning grammar and practicing translation was replaced by actual communicating This method focused on the ability to receive information of students It required people to speak much more than write lOMoARcPSD|12114775 - In America, literary translation was encouraged by many translation workshops - Constrative analysic: the research of comparing two or more languages to identify their commons and special features It had developed to a systematic research area in America since 1930 and flourished in 1960s and 1970s 1.4: The Holme/Toury ‘map’ 1.5: Developments since Holmes _ The exist of machine translation and corpus-based studies + Germany: text types and text purpose + The Hallidayan: discourse analysis and systemic functional grammar + A pioneering centre was Tel Aviv + Itamar Even-Zohar and Gideon Toury pursued the idea + Belgium-based group including José Lambert and the late André Lefevere + The collection of essays edited by Hermans lOMoARcPSD|12114775 1.6: The Van Doorslaer ‘map’ _ In order to deal with such a breadth of work, a new conceptual tool was developed for the Benjamins Translation Studies Bibliography, as explained by Van Doorslaer (2007) _ In the new maps, a distinction is drawn between ‘translation’ and ‘translation studies’, reflecting the different centres of interest of research ‘Translation’ looks at the act of translating and, in the new map, is subdivided into: ► lingual mode (interlingual, intralingual) ► media (printed, audiovisual, electronic) ► mode (covert/overt translation, direct/indirect translation, mother tongue/other tongue translation, etc.) ►field (political, religious, scientific, etc.) ‘Translation studies’ is subdivided into:  approaches (cultural approach, linguistic approach);  theories (general translation theory, polysystem theory);  research methods (descriptive, empirical);  applied translation studies (criticism, didactics, institutional environment) → Alongside these is a ‘basic transfer map’ of terminology to describe the linguistic manoeuvres that, despite the cultural turn, remain central to the concrete translating process → This consists of strategies, procedures/ techniques, ‘errors’, rules/norms/conventions/laws/universals and translation tools lOMoARcPSD|12114775 lOMoARcPSD|12114775 _ Even if it is sometimes blurred in the literature: a strategy is the overall orientation of a translated text while a procedure is a specific technique used at a given point in a text _ Linguistic transfer of course still occurs within a sociocultural and historical context and institutional environment that place their own constraints on the process 1.7: Discipline, interdiscipline or multidiscipline? _ Discipline knowledge refers to the specialisation and in-depth content knowledge of a certain type of curriculum or subject _ Multidiscipline knowledge refers to knowledge of a wide range of perspectives within a combination of subject areas _ Interdiscipline knowledge refers to the combination of two or more academic disciplines into one activity Downloaded by Vu Vu (quangchinhlas199@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|12114775 → Having disciplinary, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge helps to advance student's skill set, making them more valuable to employers An interdiscipline therefore challenges the current conventional way of thinking by promoting and responding to new links between different types of knowledge and technologies For us, translation studies has the potential for a primary relationship with disciplines such as: ☼ linguistics ☼ modern languages and language studies; ☼ comparative literature; ☼ cultural studies (including gender studies and postcolonial studies); ☼ philosophy ► And in recent years, with sociology, history and creative writing Conclusion  Translation studies is an academic research area that has expanded massively over the years Translation was formerly studied as a languagelearning methodology or as part of comparative literature, translation ‘workshops’ and contrastive linguistics courses  The discipline as we now know it owes much to the work of James S Holmes but the context has now advanced The interrelated branches of theoretical, descriptive and applied translation studies initially structured research  Over time the interdisciplinarity and specialization of the subject have become more evident and theories and models have continued to be imported from other disciplines but also forged from within translation studies itself lOMoARcPSD|12114775 Downloaded by Vu Vu (quangchinhlas199@gmail.com) ...
