UNIT 10: ENERGY SOURCES Lesson 3: A closer look I OBJECTIVES: - By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: Knowledge: * Grammar: Know the use of the present continuous tense Competences: - Develop communication skills and cultural awareness - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork - Actively join in class activities Qualities: - Develop awareness of conserving the energy sources II TEACHING AIDS Teacher: Text book, pictures, planning, … - Grade textbook, Unit 10, A closer look - Computer connected to the internet - Projector - Word cards - Sachmem.vn Students: Text books, notebooks III PROCEDURES: 1.Warm-up (5’) * Aim: - To activate students’ knowledge on the topic of the unit - To enhance students’ skills of cooperating with team mates * Content: Game: jumble sentences * Products: Ss write as many correct sentences as possible Teacher’s and Ss’activities Content Teacher gives instructions * Jumble sentences: Teacher divides the class into groups - Teacher delivers a set of word Suggested answers: She is learning English now cards which are jumble sentences in They are not using solar energy present continuous to Are you working on your Project? Where is your brother studying? She is playing basketball in the school yard each group Students will have to work in groups to create as many correct sentences from the word cards as possible The group with more correct sentences will be the winner Teacher checks and corrects if Ss make the sentences incorrectly Presentation (5’) * Aim: To introduce students the form of the key grammar and how to use them appropriately * Content: The use of the present continuous tense * Products: The use of the present continuous tense Teacher’s and Ss’activities Content - Teacher says: “This lesson today is going to tell you about “The present continuous” - Teacher draws students’ attention to the grammar point and the example - Ss read the grammar explicit and study the example - Ss may discuss within groups/pairs before answering - Teacher shows and says the sentences aloud and asks Ss to make similar sentences Practice (30’) * Aims: - To help Ss revise the use of the present continuous tense To practise using the present continuous To practise making sentences using the present continuous - To practise speaking using the present continuous * Content: - To practise using the present continuous * Products: Students know how to use the present continuous Teacher’s and Ss’activities Task 1: (3’) T-Ss Content - Teacher asks Ss to look at the pictures and work in pairs - Teacher asks them how would they ask and answer (using Present continuous) - Ss work out and answer questions with a partner - Ss share their answers in pairs - T asks them to check their answers - Then teacher tells them to share their sentences as a whole in class and correct for them Task Work in pairs Tell your partner what the people in the pictures are doing Answers: a- She is teaching maths/ is writing on the board b- They are play football/soccer c- She is riding her bike/bicycle d- She is cooking cShe is singing f- He is watering the flowers/plans/is doing gardening Task 2: (7’) T-Ss; Ss-Ss; T-Ss Task 2: Complete the sentences, using the Teacher asks students to reaf the present continuous form of the verbs in instructions carefully and the exercise brackets individually Ss exercise then share with their partner Ss can check and correct for their partner Teacher corrects their answers as a class *Answer key: is talking are using are taking are developing are reducing Task 3: (5’) T-Ss TSs, Ss-Ss - Teacher Task 3: Circle the correct form of the verb in asks students questions to make sure each sentence students understand the instructions - Teacher nominates Ss to read aloud the correct sentences - Teacher checks and gives the corrections if they have mistakes Task 4: (7’) T-Ss TSs, Ss-Ss - Teacher gives Ss time to the Task 4: Write sentences about what the people are doing or not doing, using the suggestions exercise individually and peer check with their partner Teacher nominates Ss to read aloud the sentences Then asks them to underline the words/phrases that can be found in Present continuous sentences Teacher checks and gives the corrections if they have mistakes - Task 5: (8’) T-Ss; Ss-Ss, T-Ss Ss work in pairs as instructed Ss take note while doing the task - Teacher walks around to give instructions and corrections (if nedded) Teacher calls some students to report their partner’s answers using present continuous and then gives Ss feedback Teacher chooses some common mistakes and suggest students how to avoid them Answers: 1.The students are doing the project now Mrs Lien is teaching us about solar energy at the moment They are learning about energy this month She isn’t swimming in the swimming pool right now Nowadays, people in Iceland aren’t using energy from coal Task 5: Work in pairs Ask and answer the following questions Production (3’) * Aim: To consolidation what students have learnt in the lesson * Content: Summarize the main content in the lesson * Products: Ss say what students have learnt in the lesson Teacher’s and Ss’ activities - Teacher sums up Content the use of the present continuous - Ss listen and remember Teacher’s and Ss’ activities - T reminds Ss to homework and prepare the new lesson -The use of the present continuous Homework (2’) Content - Exercises in the workbook ...
