time-tested advice of “What Color Is Your Parachute?” is needed more than ever Recent graduates are facing the changing economic landscape, the complex ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, workers laid off mid-career, and people searching for an inspiring work-life change all look to career guru Richard N Bolles for support, encouragement, and advice on which job-hunt strategies work—and which don't This revised edition combines classic elements like the famed Flower Exercise with updated tips on social media and search tactics What Color Is Your Parachute? 2019: A Practical Manual for Job-hunters and Career-changers is a business and self-help book by Richard Nelson Bolles The book, rewritten and republished annually, offers practical advice and tips for jobseekers and those looking for a career change in new fields Bolles demystifies the entire job-search process, from writing resumes to interviewing to networking, expertly guiding job-hunters toward their dream job It takes longer to find a job now than ever before, but many of these jobs are transient and temporary People are working harder to find jobs that don’t last long However, there are more jobs out there than we realize Jobseekers use outdated search methods to find work, which is why it takes so long Therefore, before you begin searching for a new job or career, you must first identify what you are good at and what you enjoy Then you should find the right network of people to introduce you to promising opportunities Bolles believes that what we’re best at and what we’re good at generally coincide If you’re going to change careers, you should aim for one that will give you satisfaction and opportunities to shine Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A To be a successful translator, you must not only be good at your field but also know many things about other fields Therefore, I decided to translate this book to broaden my knowledge and equip myself well after graduation I hope that my translation will help people find the solution to get the best method as well as the right way in their job-hunting process or career-changing Aims and objectives 2.1 Aims This graduation thesis has reflected my own ability during the past four years During my four years at Duy Tan University, I received valuable support, help, and encouragement from my supervisor, my teachers, and friends This graduation thesis is a reflection of my own ability that we have collected and trained from the teachers’ lectures over the past four years Furthermore, through this paper, I hope I can explain difficult phrases and sentence structures to avoid misleading readers 2.2 Objectives After completing my graduation thesis, I have gained the following goals: • Improving and expanding my knowledge • Becoming good at translation skills, using suitable equivalent words and structures of sentences • Knowing how to apply theories of translation to the study • Analyzing difficult and complex words, phrases, or structures which easily make misunderstand for readers • Knowing how to translate the text smoothly and naturally Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A • Removing language barriers to help Vietnamese people understand clearly the book Scope of the Study The book that I selected to translate is “What Color Is Your Parachute?" by Richard Nelson Bolles, 2019 The graduation thesis is translated from the original version and given the analysis of the suggested translation of the text Moreover, this paper will also give some difficult vocabulary and structures that I met during the process of translation Finally, some essential solutions are recommended 3.1 Text Features The book "What color is your parachute ?2019" is a great help for anyone looking to change their career or change their job (well researched by the author) This book provides a great insight into how to write a resume, find the right career for you, and more There are myriad books on job seeking, resume building, career counseling, etc but Bolles book remains the only one in this genre that has soul and doesn't just help with job searching, but more importantly with soul searching Bolles boldly included the God factor into the job search, being a man of faith If you've been in dire straits, as I have, Bolles is right when he states: "unemployment, particularly in this brutal economy, gives us a chance to contemplate why we are here on earth, and what our Calling, Vocation, or Mission is, for each of us." 3.2 Text Length This book includes 12 chapters Because of the limited time, I only picked out chapter “ There Are Over Ten Million Vacancies Available Each Month ” and chapter “ The Best and Worst Ways to Look for Jobs” from the book Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 66 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A [P 35; Para 35] Relative clause: who have been tremendously successful in using the Internet to find a job Relative pronoun: who The clause “who have been tremendously successful in using the Internet to find a job.” functions as an adjective that modifies and explains the preceding pronoun phrase“job-hunters” My suggested version: “Bạn nghe câu chuyện người tìm việc thành cơng rực rỡ việc sử dụng Internet để tìm kiếm việc làm.” Example 22: “That meant, you had other eyes out there looking for any leads (rhymes with needs) that might help you.” [P 43; Para 54] Relative clause: that might help you Relative pronoun: that The clause “that might help you” functions as an adjective that modifies and explains the preceding independent clause“That meant, you had other eyes out there looking for any leads (rhymes with needs)” My suggested version: “Điều có nghĩa là, bạn có người khác tìm kiếm giúp bạn nhà tuyển dụng tiềm (phù hợp với u cầu) điều giúp ích cho bạn.” 4.2.2.2 Complex sentences with adverbial clauses Example 23: “It begins with Who (are you) before considering What (shall I do).” [P 28; Para 30] Independent clause: It begins with Who (are you) Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 67 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A Dependent clause: before considering What (shall I do) Subordinating conjunction: before In this case, the marked adverbial clause of concession started with “before” and modified the meaning of time for the sentence My suggested version: “Suy nghĩ bắt đầu với Ai (bạn ai) trước xem xét Cái (tơi làm gì).” Example 24: “If your job-hunt isn't working, you must increase the amount of time you're devoting to your job-hunt ” [P 52; Para 68] Independent: you must increase the amount of time you're devoting to your job-hunt Dependent: If your job-hunt isn't working Subordinating conjunction: If In this case, the marked adverbial clause of condition started with “if” and modified the meaning of condition for the sentence My suggested version: “Nếu công việc tìm kiếm bạn khơng hiệu quả, bạn phải tăng lượng thời gian dành cho cơng việc tìm kiếm mình.” Example 25: “When you're unemployed, and job-hunting, or trying to change careers, everyone will tell you: a good resume will get you a job.” [P 38; Para 41] Independent: everyone will tell you: a good resume will get you a job Dependent: When you're unemployed, and job-hunting, or trying to change careers Subordinating conjunction: when Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 68 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A In this case, the marked adverbial clause of condition started with “when” and modified the meaning of interrogative for the sentence My suggested version: “Khi bạn thất nghiệp, tìm việc, cố gắng thay đổi nghề nghiệp, người khuyên bạn rằng: sơ yếu lý lịch tốt giúp bạn có cơng việc.” 4.2.2.3 Complex sentences with noun clauses Example 26: “That is what never changes.” [P 20; Para 12] Noun clause: what never changes Subordinating conjunction: what The noun clause “what never changes” functions as predicate nominative for this sentence My suggested version: “Đó điều không thay đổi.” Example 27: “You approach those companies that look the least bit interesting to you Wait to see if you get any responses.” [P 26; Para 24] Noun clause: that look the least bit interesting to you Subordinating conjunction: that The noun clause “that look the least bit interesting to you” functions as indirect objects of the verd “approach” for this sentence My suggested version: “Bạn tiếp cận cơng ty thú vị sau bạn chờ xem có nhận phản hồi khơng.” Example 28: Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 69 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A “But, if it doesn’t work (for you) the good news is that there is a radically different second way to hunt for work or a career-change.” [P 26; Para 26] Noun clause: that there is a radically different second way to hunt for work or a career-change Subordinating conjunction: that The noun clause “that there is a radically different second way to hunt for work or a career-change.” functions as a subject for this sentence My suggested version: “Tuy nhiên, khơng hiệu (đối với bạn) thật may có cách thứ hai hồn tồn khác để tìm kiếm công việc thay đổi nghề nghiệp.” 4.2.3 Compound - complex sentences Compound-complex sentences are the most complicated sentences, as their name implies A compound-complex sentence has at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause In simple terms, an independent clause can be a sentence on its own while a dependent clause cannot Compound-complex sentences help us express longer more complicated thoughts, with more parts than other sentences They’re good tools for explaining complicated ideas or describing long chains of events Example 29: “I guess if you hear something often enough, and from enough different sources, you start to think it must be true ” [P 38; Para 42] There are two independent clauses “I guess”, and “from enough different sources, you start to think it must be true”, and one dependent Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 70 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A clause (adverbial clause) “if you hear something often enough” in this sentence The independent clauses are combined by the coordinator “and” My suggested version: “Tơi đốn bạn nghe điều thường xun, từ đủ nguồn thông tin khác nhau, bạn bắt đầu nghĩ phải thật.” Example 30: “The method consists of looking at professional journals in your profession or field, and answering any ads there that intrigue you.” [P 42; Para 49] There are two independent clauses “The method consists of looking at professional journals in your profession or field”, and “answering any ads there”, and one dependent clause (relative clause) “that intrigue you” in this sentence The independent clauses are combined by the coordinator “and” My suggested version: “Phương pháp bao gồm việc xem tạp chí chun mơn nghề nghiệp lĩnh vực bạn trả lời quảng cáo khiến bạn tò mò ” 4.2.4 Empty Subject Commonly, “It”, “There” are used to replace the subjects which are too long or emphasize the diea that the author would like to express Example 31: “There are two very different ways you can go about the job-hunt or a career change.” [P 25; Para 24] In this situation, “There” was a fake subject and after the main verd is a noun pharase To make the sentence’s meaning adapts to the Vietnamese style, I decided to change a little bit in words’ order when translating Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 71 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A My suggested version: “Có hai cách hồn tồn khác để bạn tìm việc thay đổi nghề nghiệp.” Example 32: “It is strange If you’re out of work, everyone will tell you the best way to look for a job is to look for employer’s job-posting (vacancies) ” [P 35; Para 34] In this situation, “It” was a fake subject To make the sentence’s meaning adapts to the Vietnamese style, I decided to change a little bit in words’ order when translating My suggested version: “ Điều lạ bạn khơng có việc làm người cho bạn biết cách tốt để tìm việc tìm đăng tuyển dụng nhà tuyển dụng ( vị trí tuyển dụng) ” Example 33: “It is typically called “news about the unemployment rate,” though it is more accurate to think of it as “news of the net change in the size of the working workforce in the U.S.”.” [P21; Para 14] In this situation, “it” was a fake subject To make the sentence’s meaning adapt to the Vietnamese style, I decided to change a little bit in words’ order when translating My suggested version: “Phương pháp bao gồm việc xem tạp chí chun mơn nghề nghiệp lĩnh vực bạn trả lời quảng cáo khiến bạn tị mị ” Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 72 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A CHAPTER 5: DIFFICULTIES AND SOLUTIONS 5.1 Difficulties At the university, I have been taught many translation skills through theoretical as well as practical subjects, but translating and analyzing the text correctly is so hard These subjects give me a lot of skills and background knowledge to convey meaning in a text from one language to another language However, every language has its particular characteristic and expression In addition, grammar, lexis, syntax, or specific terms are also affects the quality of the suggested version Thus, correctly translating a text from English into Vietnamese is a difficult task To get right, natural, smooth and interesting suggested versions, translators are required to have deep specific knowledge about the field They can translate as well as understand structures and lexis used in the text Coverting the text from one language to another is also a challenge when the translator must reconstruct the original text in the form of SL to TL Especially, they must give a concise and exact translated version which is easy for the reader to understand Therefore, as an amateur translator, I also had many problems during the translation process Firstly, social knowledge is important for translation to make your suggested version more smoothly and naturally During the translating process, I caught many words that have multiple and abstract meaning, so I was confused to choose the appropriate meaning for the translated sentences or ideas Also, it takes me waste more time to look up and make up my mind to choose the right meaning The multi-word units with a lot of meanings in dictionary require that I have to understand the context and the author’s ideas to opt for the suitable meanings Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 73 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A Besides, I translated a tourism document and it is an abstract study, so I met up with many specific terms However, lacking knowledge in this field made me have several difficulties when converting these terms into TL The specific terms require accurate equivalents, but sometimes, I don’t know how to solve these ones because I can’t use a normal meaning to transfer Moreover, these ones usually are not defined in the dictionary, so it is a challenge for me to translate these terms Furthermore, the structure is also another issue that drove me quite anxious There are many complex structures and phrases that are very hard or even obscure to analyse in this text Although I am an English majored student and I have studied quite carefully about syntax and semantic, there are some structures such as compound-complex sentences which I found it difficult to analyze and translate exactly Information, in addition, which comes from different sources on the Internet is very abundant, so some of them are not exact That is the reason why I ask my supervisor and my friends for advice to have a clearer understanding and a better translation The next problem I face is the differences in grammar between languages For example, Vietnamese grammar is very different from English grammar Also, many structures are very popular in English but not exist in Vietnamese, for instance, passive voice in English is a common structure, but it is not always “passive” when translated into Vietnamese The way of translating such English structures into Vietnamese naturally and smoothly is a challenge for me and other students who have learned English As inexperienced translators, they must try to understand the author’s idea and then use another structure in the target language to express it As inexperienced translators, they must try to Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 74 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A understand the author’s idea and then use another structure in the target language to express it Moreover, the time that I had to translate this text is rather short while the text length is quite long, so I not have enough time to study the text carefully and analyze difficult expressions as well as possible The major problem making me embarrassed is the way to express myself naturally and smoothly Finally, understanding the original idea of the text and being good at grammar and vocabulary are necessary, I must read and study more carefully because it is uneasy to translate a text successfully I try my best to give a concise and exactly translated version that is easy for the readers to understand 5.2 Solutions During the process of completing my graduation thesis, I gained experience in solving difficulties and challenges perfectly Now I would like to propose some solutions that help me complete my gradution thesis First, I read the whole original text to get the main idea of the author before translating, because I could cover the context of the text and had an overall view In this process, I also focused and marked all the difficult words and phrases that I felt hard to translate Besides, I also highlighted the structures that made me confused or incomprehensible Then, I would read it carefully again and tried my best to translate it If my versions were not fluent, I would ask my supervisor to get some advice I think she wil be pleased to instruct me on how to analyse these inexplicable structures or the way to get the best meanings for difficult words In addition, I also found and read several books and articles related to this topic, thereby I have more useful knowledge about this field, then understanding ideas of the text became easier I also referred to some thesis of the predecessors Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 75 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A in the library and followed the directions of the Department to master the process and the way of doing graduation paper Next, I scheduled my time to this thesis step by step and tried to finish it on time I also looked up many dictionaries and related documents when translating the multiple words as well as difficult phrases Also, I always asked my friends and even my family members whether they could understand my version This is really a good way that I could use to improve my paper’s quality Finally, a translator needs to cultivate the knowledge of society through books, newspapers, the Internet, TV, radio and so to help the translation process more easily In the process I used many kinds of dictionary, such as the English Vietnamese dictionary of Linguistic Institute, Lac Viet dictionary, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Lingoes Essential Dictionary, etc However, some words were not available in those; others did not fix with the content of the report Due to the findings in the meaning, I think the role of content in translation now seems crucial Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 76 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS 6.1 Summary In the process of doing this paper, I not only gained a lot of precious experiences but also found numerous deficiencies myself I have been learning a lot of useful knowledge as well as skills to become a good translator during academic years at the Faculty of Language - Duy Tan University Be that as it may, when doing this paper, I realized that what I had learned is fair a drop of water within the ocean of information Through this paper, I had opportunity to hone as well as make strides in my interpretation expertise By doing so, I could also master my ability in analysis and expressions and even gain a lot of valuable experiences during the process of completing this paper During the translating process, I realized that I hadn't got sufficient lexicon in both SL and TL There were many expressions which I did not know their implications, and indeed in some cases, I seem not to know how to express the thought of the author into Vietnamese even though I caught on to it That makes me confused and embarrassed to choose correctable meaning for the suggested version So, enough vocabulary is one of the most essential factors to understand and transfer the text exactly into the TL Besides, when you study a certain field, you must have the specific knowledge about it Because this plays an important rule to get an exact translation Having specific knowledge will help translators render more precisely This is one of the important experiences that I gained from my translation process Although my graduation thesis still has many mistakes about grammar, syntax, as well as the way to express ideas of the text, I have learnt much useful knowledge in the field of Tourism Anyway, doing this paper is a Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 77 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A great chance for me to improve my own translation skills and my ability for a career in the future I think I must practice interpreting more and more in different fields to have more experiences as well as skills to become a successful translator 6.2 Implications After finishing my graduation paper, I would like to offer some suggestions for both the language learners and teachers 6.2.1 Implications for learning Being a language student in general and a translation student in particular, besides the passion for learning languages, I think each student should master their own knowledge in as many fields as possible and practice a lot to improve their translation skills Especially, we must study carefully the structure, syntax, semantic, etc to understand the idea of author and reproduce the information in the TL Furthermore, if you are also a language student, I think you should read more books, novels, articles and even magazines both in your mother tongue and the foreign language that you are learning This does not only assist you to gain more valuable knowledge but it is additionally a great way to extend your lexicon When having enough vocabulary, you can reduce the difficulties to which you can face during translating process Thereby, your suggested translation can be more natural and smooth In addition, having a good reading comprehension in understanding English is also a very important thing You should improve your own abilitiy to read and understand the text well In that way, you can easily get a the general idea as well as detailed information of the text, so that reproducing information will be more simple Besides, being good at writing is also important Reading, Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 78 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A understanding, translating and praticing more and more are significant factors that help you become a good translator 6.2.2 Implications for teaching Besides some suggestions for the languages learner, I would like to give some implications for teaching in Duy Tan University in general and the Department of Foreign Language in particular Nowadays, translation and interpretaion is an important subject which not only help to expand the cultural and language knowledge of students but also creates many job opportunities for them Thus the teachers should focus on how to teach more effectively and interestedly Firstly, I think translation is a quite boring subject, so teachers should create an interesting atmosphere to attract students’ attention Playing some simple mini games, funny English songs or quizzes, and creating competitions among groups can be good ways to increase the interaction between students and the teacher in each lesson Also, I think some major subjects such as Translation theory, Translation and 2, Syntax, Advances Grammar should be more concerned because they are very indispensable to students during the process of doing the graduation paper Moreover, students should be encouraged more even when they made mistakes In that way, students can be more self-confident and develop their own courage to study more effectively A few encouraging words could mean so much to students than critic one In conclusion, I hope the suggestions above will be useful for both learners and teachers After finishing this paper, I saw that my translation skills have been improved a lot This will be a good experience for me in the future Student: Ho Viet Thuy Duyen Code:23203112923 Graduation Paper 79 Supervisor: Doan Thi Thanh Trang M.A REFERENCES BOOKS: [1] English Idiom In Use, By Michael McCarthy, Felicity O’Dell [2]
