Bên cạnh đó, bài nghiên cứu cịn một số hạn chế nhất định xuất phát từ việc sử dụng dữ liệu thứ cấp không đƣợc xây dựng riêng cho việc đánh giá tác động nên nghiên cứu tồn tại một số hạn chế nhất định:
Thứ nhất, nghiên cứu sử dụng dữ liệu thứ cấp từ cuộc điều tra mức sống hộ gia đình nơng thơn Việt Nam (VLHSS) năm 2010 và 2012. Do đó, có một số nhân tố chƣa đƣợc thể hiện đầy đủ nhƣ nhân tố tiết kiệm của hộ; nhân tố vốn xã hội thơng qua việc hộ có là thành viên trong các cơ quan, đoàn thể, hiệp hội nhƣ Hội Phụ nữ, Đoàn thanh niên, Hội nông dân…; các tài sản công mà hộ đƣợc thụ hƣởng; độ phì nhiêu của đất đai; khoảng cách đến nơi tiêu thụ sản phẩm của hộ; các cú sốc, khủng hoảng và các thể chế, chính sách, điều kiện kinh tế xã hội của từ địa phƣơng... Ngoài ra, do dữ liệu từ cuộc điều tra mức sống hộ gia đình năm 2012 chƣa đƣợc thu thập đầy đủ trong phần dữ liệu xã nên tác giả đã không thể đƣa các nhân tố về cở sở vật chất; khoảng cách từ hộ đến khu vực trung tâm, hành chính và nhân tố thảm hoạ vào để nghiên cứu đánh giá tác động nhƣ năm 2010. Bên cạnh đó, do thời gian và khả năng có hạn nên việc đƣa các chỉ tiêu quan sát vào mơ hình cũng cịn hạn chế ví dụ nhƣ vốn vật chất vẫn chƣa đƣa hết tất cả các tài sản riêng của hộ; yếu tố về sức khoẻ; hệ thống tƣới tiêu, thủy lợi... Vì thế, mức độ giải thích của mơ hình là chƣa cao (chỉ đƣợc khoảng 10%).
Thứ hai, cách đo lƣờng đa dạng hóa thu nhập của các hộ gia đình vùng ĐBSCL cịn hạn chế. Nghiên cứu chỉ xem xét bảy thành phần thu nhập chính của hộ gia đình là thu nhập tự tạo việc làm từ trồng trọt; thu nhập tự tạo việc làm từ chăn nuôi và nuôi trồng thuỷ hải sản; thu nhập từ tự tạo việc làm phi nông nghiệp; thu nhập từ việc làm công ăn lƣơng nông nghiệp; làm công ăn lƣơng phi nông nghiệp; thu nhập từ các khoản chuyển giao và thu nhập khác. Tuy nhiên, đa dạng hóa thu nhập có thể bao gồm đa dạng hóa trong nội bộ ngành trồng trọt nhƣ cây lƣơng thực, thực phẩm, cây ăn quả, cây công nghiệp hàng năm và lâu năm…; đa dạng hóa trong các hoạt động phi nông nghiệp bao gồm các lĩnh vực thƣơng mại, dịch vụ, sản xuất , xây dựng thì nghiên cứu chƣa xem xét đến. Vì vậy, mức độ đa dạng hóa thu nhập cũng chƣa thật sự chi tiết.
Thứ ba, các nghiên cứu khoa học về đa dạng hóa thu nhập ở ĐBSCL cịn hạn chế. Do chƣa tìm đƣợc nhiều nghiên cứu về đa dạng hóa thu nhập ở ĐBSCL nên việc kế thừa, so sánh, đối chiếu kết quả cịn nhiều thiếu sót. Ngồi ra, nghiên cứu chỉ dừng lại ở việc đánh giá các nhân tố tác động đến đa dạng hoá thu nhập của hộ gia đình nơng thơn ĐBSCL, chƣa xem xét tác động của đa dạng hoá thu nhập đến sự thay đổi phúc lợi của hộ gia đình ĐBSCL.
Mặc dù có những hạn chế khó tránh khỏi trong q trình thực hiện nhƣng nghiên cứu này đã đóng góp một phần vào việc xem xét các nhân tố ảnh hƣởng đến quyết định đa dạng hố thu nhập ở hộ gia đình, góp phần làm phong phú thêm các nghiên cứu về đa dạng hố thu nhập của hộ gia đình ĐBSCL. Một số hƣớng nghiên cứu trong tƣơng lai:
Các đề tài nghiên cứu sau có thể tiến hành khảo sát bổ sung các chỉ báo về vốn con ngƣời, vốn vật chất, vốn xã hội, vốn tự nhiên và vốn tài chính. Đồng thời cũng xem xét tồn diện các khía cạnh về thể chế, chính sách, điều kiện kinh tế - xã hội tại khu vực để đƣa vào mơ hình nhằm giải thích đƣợc đầy đủ các nhân tố tác động đến đa dạng hóa thu nhập của hộ gia đình nơng thơn ĐBSCL.
Các nghiên cứu có thể phân tích sâu vào mức độ đa dạng trong nội bộ từng ngành trồng trọt cũng nhƣ mức độ đa dạng của các hoạt động phi nông nghiệp để có
kết quả chi tiết hơn. Đề tài chỉ nghiên cứu cho hộ gia đình ở nơng thơn; do đó, hƣớng nghiên cứu sau có thể thêm vào các hộ ở thành thị nhằm xem xét các nhân tố ảnh hƣởng nhƣ thế nào ở hai khu vực này. Hoặc là nghiên cứu có thể xem xét đánh giá tác động của việc đa dạng hoá thu nhập đến phúc lợi các hộ gia đình ĐBSCL.
