TOURISM OF HISTORICAL CULTURAL VESTIGES Hanoi’s Old Quarter Hai Anh: Good afternoon all of you guys Yes, when someone ask me “How is the Vietnam?” I’ll say: “Come to Hanoi, I’ll show you the answer” My friends, when we are talking about Hanoi, we always talk about the place is said to be the symbolism of Hanoi like: One Pillar Pagoda, Guom Lake, Ho Tay icecream… Especially, when you come to Hanoi, you cannot forget the cuisine of this city But today, we don’t talking about the One Pillar Pagoda, Guom Lake or the cuisine, we want to introduce to you one of the most characteristic place in Hanoi As you know, Hanoi’s Old Quarter the place inflect exactly the life of Hanoi people with the ancient house And you know how old this streets is? Firstly, please look at our powerpoint Hanoi’s Old Quarter in the history is the old city in the outside of Thang Long Castle, (you can see on the this map) This is the place has so many bussiness activities and trading This place brought so many traditions of city people 36 Old Quarter were appeard in Ly-Tran era In that time, the people live around the region of Northern arrive here so as to living or trading, make this street become the most crowded streets In Le Dynasty, some Chinese people come here, create a China town (1974) In French Domination time, the street was recontructed The French and the Indian come here more and more That’s the reason when you come here, you can see so many house was built follow the architect of France, and the name of street is the name of what was sold on that street (Next pic) But because we don’t have enough time, I just show you characteristic streets, when mention it, you’ll think imediately about Hanoi Night Market (What is these street, can you tell me the answer?) Yes, those are streets: Hàng Ngang, Hàng Đào, Hàng Đường (From here to here, you can see the blue line on the map like this) And now, please welcome my first member in my group, Do Huu Nam, he will introduce to you the history of this streets Do Huu Nam, please Nam: (Thank you Hai Anh Firstly, i want to give you a question Do you know anything about these streets, example, what they selling, what things make the name of these streets… So as to answer the question : “How old is Hanoi’s Old Quarter?” I can answer, these streets are 2000 years old And during that time, these streets has so many changes Ok, let’s see around Number 1: Hàng Đào This streets length 260m The South point is the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square.(Next) The North point next to Hang Ngang st Hang Dao st lies in Dong Lac and Dai Loi, Tho Xuong District, in Hau Le Dynasty (Do you know why this street is called Hang Dao?) Because this place has famous job is dyeing silk, appear from Tran, Ho, Le era Silk Market open on 1st and 6th lunar month During the French Domination, the name of this streets is Rue de le Sole (Silk Street) In 1925, the cloth of Eroupe was popular, the people wasn’t interested in traditional silk anymore After that, this streets not sale silk anymore, they sold the high-up cloth and luxury thing.(Next x2) Number 2: Hàng Ngang Next to that is the Hang Ngang Street Lies in Dien Hung, Tho Xuong District On 18th century, they call this street is Hang Lam (Do you know why?) because this street sold the blue silk On 19th century, they call is Viet Dong because this street has so many the Chinese people from Quang Dong This is a busy street, so wealthy At the front and rear of the street has a gate barrier It seems that the the reason this street was called Hang Ngang (As you can see on this picture, this is the gate i was talking about) In Le Dynasty, the Chinese come here to sold tea or tobacco, the rich one sold silk, satin… In French Domination, the streets is called Rue des Catonnias And now, the name Hang Ngang still available on this street (And the last one is…) Number 3: Hàng Đường The last streets i want to introduce is the Hang Duong st The South point was connected Hang Ngang st and the North Point was connected Dong Xuan Market The reason why they call this streets is Hang Duong because this is the street where sold candy, the product from sugar, honey It’s appear from 15th century, lies on Dong Hoa Noi village and Hau Dong Hoa Mon, Tho Xuong District Long time ago, To Lich river flow through here And this place has a bridge cross the river name Cau Dong But now, this bridge is dissapear, the To Lich river not flow through too In French Domination, the street has a name is Rue du Sucre Because this is the longstanding streets so they would have many historical on this streets That is the ancient houses, temple or community hall… Let me introduce Ngoc Doanh, he’ll help me present some place you should visit when you come here Doanh: (Thank you, Nam Yes, in the last day, we went to Hanoi’s Old Quarter Actually until we come there, we know about that historical Maybe we go through there so many times but we hadn’t notice about that until now But I think maybe you already known about this places.)(Next) (Ok, please look at on this map I’ll start from here, Hang Dao st with the some historical in here, here… and here Then we’ll finish in here, Hang Duong st.) And to continue our presentation of our group, I give you more details of the most famous street in Hanoi Alright, the first one will be Hang Đao street (I’m sure that all of you must listen to the name Hang Dao at least once in your whole life ) Hang Đao street is very well-known for products of dyed silk especially red-dyed silk In the past, people could come to the street to find and buy goods made from silk and textile with full range of colours but red ones were still the most popular Maybe that was the reason why the street is call Hang Dao But now, it is not like that anymore, people come here not to buy dyed fabric Instead of selling silk and textile, so many other goods such as clothes, clock and wrist watch, gold, silver, handicrafts, luxury goods… are being purchased Next, I will provide you with some information of Hang Ngang st which is very famous as well Hang Ngang st is famous for selling Chinese tea, tobacco, pipe tobacco, silk, … And now people in this street sell clothes, luxury goods… Besides, on the street there are some famous painting shops Young people also come to this street to taste mixed fruit dish This dish is very delicous It made from fruits (as green mango, guava, ) mixed with salt, sugar, chilli powder And it is more delicious when you use this dish with some popular drinks and fruit juices such as lemon juice, coconut milk, milk tea,… And the last, Hang Duong st will be presented to end my talk Discussing about Hanoi foods, we all think of “phở”, Cha Ca La Vong, Cốm Vòng village,… And it would be lacking without mentioning of traditional food in Hang duong A lot of candy and sugared cake are being sold in this street Everything is made from honey, sugar, brown sugar and “ô mai” The traditional food there is peanut candy, lotus jam, salted dried apricot, sugared dry apricot Xuân Phương: ** Thank you Hà for introduction about feature goods in Night Market What you know about Night Market in Ha Noi? ( Some students will raise your hand to answer) _ OK So today I want everybody here know more and more information about Night Market Because if you are a international tour guide, this is the main streets you have introduce for tourists Of course this information very important So please concentrate to our presentation : Old Quarter in Night Market _ Hanoi night market, also known as Dong Xuan night market, is held from 18h - 23h at the 6th, 7th and Sunday It’s a very interesting place that all visitors should not miss if they have chance to travel to Hanoi _Hanoi night market spreads from Hang Dao Treet to Dong Xuan Market Market opened on 18/11/2003 Initially only 68 booths, now this market has increased “Cho” has a lot of foreign tourists to visit, so shopping for handicraft items sold here pretty much.There are a various kinds of products in Hanoi night market People can find clothes, sweets, salted dry fruit (ô mai), decorations, toys,sundry goods on the streets: Hang Ngang, Hang Duong, Luong Van Can, Hang Ma _ For many Hanoians, coming to the night market becomes a habit even when they don’t want to shop, just stroll to feel the atmosphere, chat with family or friends and enjoy some snack _ Children excitedly play with sand pictures or paint statues There are a lot of couples hand in hand walking together with smiles on their faces _ Many foreign tourists join in the streams of people taking picture; sometimes they stop to select some products Many of Hanoi or Vietnamese style souvenirs which always cost less than the ones in the shops are sold in the market _ It’s also a good idea coming to the night market to enjoy food There is a plenty of food here People can find bacon, grilled (nem chua), grilled sausages, Hai Phong bread,Phở, bún ốc etc … at two sides of the market At the end of the market street, there are more kinds of tasty dishes such as hot pot, grilled food, khuc (khúc) cake, steamed glutinous rice (xôi) _ On the Saturday night, you can also see clouds singing _ a traditional singing of the nation is being restored Furthermore, the first two streets have held cultural performances of traditional folk arts such as rowing, light- headedness, their views, ca trù… This is considered unique collection of antique street night market attract tourists, especially foreigners _ Nowadays, Ancient Town Night Market is a bustling place of purchase, with the participation of nearly 4,000 stores ** Now it’s end of my presentation Old quarter is more lively at night So come and join with us to experience Old Quarter in Night Market in Ha Noi I’m sure you will enjoy with this Thank you for listening And the last but not least From the beginning, I have always mentioned about Dong Xuan market So, i want to finish our presentation about the visit around Dong Xuan Market Please, Phuong Anh Phương Anh: Dong Xuan is the name of the largest market in Hanoi Located in the heart of the Old Quarter, it was part of an ancient hamlet of that name before it became a street It was built in 1889 by the French colonial administration to replace the Cau Dong (Eastern Bridge) Market situated to the east, close to the To Lich River, which was partly filled for the arrangement of new streets At the end of 19th century, the Old Quarter of Hanoi had two main marketplaces, one at Hang Duong street and the other at Hang Ma street In 1889, these two markets were closed and replaced by the original Dong Xuan Market which was built by the order of the French administration in 1889 as one of the principal new architectures of Hanoi, together with Long Bien Bridge which was located nearby and completed in 1902 The market was located at the Hanoi's Old Quarter which was only 600 m north of Hoan Kiem Lake.The covered area of the market was about 6.500 m² with a large roof of corrugated galvanised ironsupplied by the French contractor Poinsard Veyret The most recognizable feature of the market was the 5-arch entrance corresponding to Dong Xuan Market's five domes, each dome was measured 19 m in height and 25 m in width When the First Indochina War broke out in Hanoi in early 1947, a fierce struggle between Việt Minh and French forces took place in the area of the market on February 14.To commemorate the event, a memorial was erected near the principal gate of the market in 2005 In 1994, the market was nearly destroyed by a disastrous fire which claimed the lost of about 4.5 million USD worth of stock After the fire, Dong Xuan Market was rebuilt in the original form and it is still the largest covered market of Hanoi The ward to which the market belongs is also named Dong Xuan (phường Đồng Xuân), this is one of the busiest commercial place of Hanoi with about a half of the total number of households has trading activities ... name of these streets… So as to answer the question : “How old is Hanoi’s Old Quarter?
