You can create a customized Web site that meets your business requirements without writing a single line of code ! A Web site name should have a maximum of 21 characters, including letters, words, numbers, and hyphens (-) A hyphen cannot be the first or last character of a Web site name, and two consecutive hyphens are not allowed ! A Web site name should be in lowercase, not capital letters ! Background color # Lead-in Site Manager enables you to customize your home page by selecting a design for your site that is appropriate to your type of business A site design is comprised of: Graphic images Factors to consider when choosing a site design: # Type of business # Image the business needs to promote # Type of customer the site wants to attract A design defines the look and feel of a Web site Your choice of a design affects various aspects of your site, such as the background color, fonts, buttons, shadows, and graphic images When choosing a design for your Web site, you need to consider the type of business your site is promoting, and the image of your business that you would like to present to customers For example, a site that promotes fashion apparel would present a different design than a site that promotes automobile accessories Your audience and customers may also influence your choice of a site design For example, a Web site that is specifically meant for children will necessarily look different from a site meant for networking professionals Site Manager offers you a set of customized site designs You can choose the design that is best suited to your type of business Before deciding on a site design, it is advisable to preview the effect of each design on the appearance of your site and, when you are satisfied, select the appropriate design for your site When you select a design, a graphic representation of the design is displayed to the left of the list of designs In addition, a brief description of the design and the business types for which it might be suitable is displayed to the right of the list of designs 12 Module 2: Creating and Customizing E-Commerce Web Sites Delivery Tip Demonstrate the procedure for selecting a site design by using Site Manager Select a design from the list of site designs, and then click the View an example link to show how a site will look after applying the design You can preview a design at the left side of the list of designs, and see a description of the design at the right side of the list The Site Manager start page has a link pointing to the Select a Site Design page This page displays a list of designs that you can select for your business Select the site design that you want to apply to your home page, and then save the design that you selected You can preview your site by clicking the link on the Site Manager start page that points to your home page This will allow you to see how your home page looks with the site design that you selected Module 2: Creating and Customizing E-Commerce Web Sites Customizing the Header and Footer Topic Objective To explain how to use Site Manager to customize the header and footer of a Web page based on specific business requirements Lead-in Site Manager allows you to customize the appearance of your Web page’s header and footer according to your type of business ! Basic understanding of what a home page is, and what the general features and parts of a home page are ! Basic knowledge of how to build a Web site by using Site Manager Scenario You own a medium-sized business operating in five major cities across the United States As part of your expansion plan, you want to increase coverage and reach out to potential customers by establishing an e-commerce presence on the Internet After you create your Web site, you will need to customize it according to your business requirements In this lab, you will create a Web site and customize it according to your business needs Note To complete the exercises in this lab, we have used a specific example of a toy store Web site However, if you decide to create a different Web site, you can modify the text used in the lab to fit the type of business you choose Estimated time to complete this lab: 30 minutes 16 Module 2: Creating and Customizing E-Commerce Web Sites Exercise Creating a Web Site Using Site Manager In this exercise, you will sign up for the Site Manager service of Microsoft bCentral so that you can use Site Manager to create the home page of your Web site ! Sign up for Site Manager Access the site http://sitemanager.bcentral.com and click SIGN UP NOW On the Sign Up page, enter or type the following information about yourself: • E-mail Address • First Name • Last Name • Address • City • State (if you are a U.S resident) • Province/Region (if you are from outside the U.S.) • ZIP/Postal code • Country • Phone • Password for logging in to Site Manager Note The e-mail address that you provide must be valid, but the password that you provide can be different from the one that you use to log in to your e-mail account Ensure that your personal information is correct before continuing Click Next On the Sign up for bCentral Business Web Services page, click Get Started Module 2: Creating and Customizing E-Commerce Web Sites 17 ! Create a Web site by using Site Manager On the Web address page, click the Already have a Web address? Click here link In the http://website.bcentral.com/ text box, select the domain name of your new site, and click Go Important While selecting a domain name, provide one that you have selected You can derive your domain name from the name of your business Alternatively, you can assume that your company is Mightyflight Toys For instance, you can specify your domain name to be www.mightytoysXY.com, where XY are any two digits This is because there are other students in the class who might also assume their company name to be Mightyflight Toys Please note that the Site Manager server accepts only unique domain names If you supply a domain name, that already exits, you will get a message stating that it already exists This is more likely if you select mightytoysXY as the domain name, since other students may have used it If you need to change your domain name, you may want to modify your company name, so that the two names are similar In the Web address summary page, verify your Web address and click Continue In the Sign up for bCentral Business Web Services page, click Continue 18 Module 2: Creating and Customizing E-Commerce Web Sites Exercise Customizing the Home Page of a Web Site In this exercise, you will use Site Manager to customize the layout, the content, and the header and footer of the home page you created in the previous exercise ! Customize the home page content by using Site Manager On the Try it! Create your Home page page, ensure that the Yes, help me create it now option is selected, and click Continue In the Type a page title field, type The Mightyflight Toys Home Page and click Continue In the Highlight text field, type You Name It, We’ve Got It! In the Home page text field, type The most comprehensive collection of toys on the Internet, and then click Continue In the Bullet introduction field, type Browse our site for: In the Bulleted text field, type Great deals on our Pick of the Month In the Bulleted text field, type Rare collectibles In the Bulleted text field, type Fun events, and then click Continue On the page in which you can add an image file, click Continue 10 Select the Top links, right-focused page layout option, and click Save and Continue 11 On the Sign up for bCentral Business Web Services page, click Continue 12 On the Review Your Order page, check your order total, and then click Purchase 13 In the second part of the Sign Up page, type or enter your credit card type, credit card number, and expiration date so you can pay for Site Manager membership, and then click Next 14 Check the invoice displayed on the screen to confirm your payment details, and then click Continue Important Save the invoice page on a folder in your computer, or e-mail it to the address that you used to sign up for Site Manager You may need the invoice for future reference 15 In the Sign up Completed! page click Go to Site Manager ! Customize the header of the home page On the Site Manager start page, click the link that allows you to edit headers and footers In the Company name text box, type Mightyflight Toys In the Tagline text box, type The largest collection of toys on the Web Module 2: Creating and Customizing E-Commerce Web Sites 19 In the E-mail address text box, type For suggestions, write to before the email address already entered in the text box To specify the image file in the Logo file location field, browse to the \Labs\Lab02\Starter\sitelogos.gif file Click Save to save the header information Note By default, the home page includes information such as your name, address, and phone number These are taken from the Sign Up form You can remove the information that you not wish to display on the home page To this, delete the information from the relevant text box on the page where you edit header and footer information ! Preview your site On the Site Manager start page, click the appropriate link to preview your site After previewing your site, return to the Site Manager start page Note If you want to view your site as it appears on the Internet, you must wait for about 30 minutes, the time it takes for your changes to be transmitted to the Internet You will be able to view your site before beginning before lab 20 Module 2: Creating and Customizing E-Commerce Web Sites Review Topic Objective To reinforce module objectives by reviewing key points !
